View Full Version : How did you find PD?

It seems we've got a lot of members here that I'm not sure how they found us.

So please tell us your story, how did you come to be a poster at PD?

I guess I'll kick this off.

Uhh........ I started it.

I know I was at PD the moment it opened. I had read Indystar for quite awhile, but there were many people who irritated me so much. I saw that Hicks was going to make his own forum, so I got on right away. Saved a lot of us. It is nice to have a real Pacers forum, where people can discuss ideas without having been called stupid every 2 posts.

I forgot Hicks...when did this start last year?

I started at fanhome in November of 2002 and the Pacer fourm this was dead and has been until we got a new mod. [Thanks zesty.;)]

But in between there I was frustrated, posting things, starting topics and I found indystar and signed up for that but soon after that Hicks started Pacers Digest. So I signed up for that.

I was posting on PD for a little while but not much longer after the second move I believe. [This is the forth I believe?]

Then I started to post again. Not to long ago.

Well, I used to read the Indystar forum on the Pacers since early 2002, but couldnt register, so when I saw some of the frustrations on that board amount to the creation and rapid advance of this vastly superior board with the Pacer fans with the most knowledge and heart concentrated here, I didn't need to think it over at all to register and post, I love it here:bowdown:.

I don't even watch the Indystar board anymore. Only check out some of the Q&A and some Pacer articles when they are on the papers own main pages.

I was at the Star forum when you started it.

The reason why this took off early on was the goofy moderation tactics at StarNews, esp their willingness to delete threads whenever someone complained, regardless of content.

Poster Quality has been what's maintained it.

I used to read the IndyStar boards, but very rarely posted and eventually stopped going because I just didn't like reading it anymore. As Rommie mentioned, I recently became moderator of the Pacers forum at FanHome, and while I like that board for discussion of stuff all around the NBA, there are several very irritating posters, and that site doesn't come close to matching the quality of this one. To answer the question, though, I heard about this site at the IS boards.

I was reading on the ESPN Pacer message board when the whole Jim Jackson rumor started up. Someone said they found a website with inside info on the situation, and that is when i started to come here and post........I must say, now when i visit ESPN boards, I realize that that board really does not compare to this one. So 3 cheers for HICKS! HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY! Thank you for saving me from my own doom.

Someone told me about the Indystar message boards...I quickly signed up and began to post. It was a wonderful place, until it happened...

The Random Thoughts thread, which was around 9, 700 posts at the time and was on its way to 10,000, was removed. Lots of people got angry and eventually I wandered over to PD. I sometimes post at IS, but not much. It seems most of the people over there now just post everything and anything and fail to back themselves up with solid info.

Hey, do you have the link to that old site, UB. I want to take a stroll down memory lane. Read some of my old posts.

I found PD because Hicks posted the link on realgm. The rest, as they say, is history. Once I discovered this place, my daily post count started dwindling considerably on realgm. Never really took to the IS forum. I'd visit it from time to time, but it seemed really cliquish and hostile. Now I never even look in on it. I figure all the good posters have made their way over here.

I've been at Indystar.com since the beginning, back when the site was accessible through www.indianasgame.com. Back then, it was a totally anonymous format. You didn't have to register with an email address or anything. I jumped on that forum the day (October-ish 1995) that it came out because it was advertised at the end of a Pacers pre-season article that I was reading at the Speedway library. I was waiting to pick up my now-wife from school....there are only 10 mos. that separates us BTW!!!!. I was the first poster on the Hoosiers and Pacers boards over there. I wasn't anonymous on there. I always included my real name and real email address. People used to make fun of me because I didn't take advantage of the anonymity. I've visited there off and on over the last 9 years, but mainly the childish antics would turn me off and I wouldn't go there for months at a time.

Anywho. Over time, the quality of the RATS board went downhill as fans of other teams started to troll around. The registering helped a little, but I agree that it became unbearable. The Colts forum is now overrun by people discussing politics!!!!!!!!

I like it over here because of the fact that Hicks and Shade and others keep it so closely moderated. I was split 50/50 on RATS (lurk/post) and PD (lurk) since Sep 2003. Now, I post on both, but I will probably soon phase out RATS and do this 85/15.

I got turned off by the core/anti-core (mid to late 90's), new breed (last year), etc... feuds that would go on, so I understand your comment about it being cliquish. I was even drafted as being a part of the anti-core, but I went along with that because some of the core were acting very self-righteous. Oh well. I'm older and wiser, but you get sick and tired of having to wade through crap to get some good insight.

Like others, I had a less-than-pleasant experience early in the days of the IS/ Indiana's Game board. Since I wasn't interested in joining the clique, I didn't even lurk after that.

After three years of living in Chicago, when Isiah was fired last summer I decided it was time to find an online Pacers community to join. I started lurking at IS and some other sites right around the time Hicks started this place, and I quickly got 'hooked'.

My first post, I think, was an analysis of Kenny Anderson's game right after he was signed.

I used to lurk on the RATS forum for years, and finally registered [though I had to use a friend's email address to do so, since it didn't accept freemail accounts] and posted maybe 12 times over the next 6 months or so.

I never really was comfortable there, and as soon as I saw PacersDigest, I signed up. I think I was on not long after it was started. But the people have always been friendlier and care more about useful conversation than childishness.

Aw, who am I kidding.... I just like the

I was an avid Indy Star member way back in the day of our original ECF teams and enjoyed the community very much - there was a comraderie there and everyone seemed to be respectful of each other and we had a lot of fun.

I left a few years before this started - I lost my patience way before you guys did... and basically just was on the IUPUI mail list - whcih is mostly dead - when Bill S posted about this place a month or so ago. This place reminds me a lot of how the Star used to be - with a bunch of bells and whistles of course.

I was a long time lurker/sometimes poster (kinda like I am here now) on the Indystar board. I loved going to Indystar back when there was discussions and I got most of my Pacers news there.

I still visit both forums, but this one more than the other. It seems like most of the users over there are either 12 year olds, trolls, or jerks. Sometimes it's a combination. :P

Thanks for creating this site and gathering a collection of friendly and intelligent posters. I'm not sure I could've handled no alternative to the "RATS" forum.

Came over on the Mayflower with the rest of the pilgrims. Not cause I had a particular gripe, per se, but, well, for those who weren't around...

You see, Hicks didn't take the Brad Miller trade very well. Alot of us were pretty worried about his mental health afterwards. I took it upon myself to come over and keep track of him, to make sure he didn't go completely off the deep end. I'm happy to report that with time, and alot of hard work on his part, Hicks once again become a contributing, if still maladjusted, member of society.

That's why I always say to those who bring up Brad, "If Hicks can get over it, so can you."

Well...here's a story...

Like most, I came here from the RATS board. For the most part, I didn't have a choice.

I became a lurker on RATS in '99, and a regular poster in '01 after a "forum wipe." I quickly racked up a lot of posts and was involved in many, many discussions about the Pacers. Also being an :hoosiers: fan, I posted quite a bit on that side of the forum as well.

One day, I was trying to acquire an item for a friend that was going to be attending :hoosiers:, so I turned to the forum for help. Since I needed the item ASAP, I upped the thread every few hours to make sure everyone that could help would see it. For whatever reason, a poster on the forum decided to ridicule and insult me about it. I turned to the FA for help, to no avail. After a while, I finally just got sick of it and snapped back. I was banned -- he wasn't.

I was already in PM contact with Hicks, as he had contacted me about writing some Pacers articles for the as-of-yet non-existant PD. When I informed him of my banning (it was via another user on the forum -- sorry, but I don't remember who ), he asked me to help him test out some stuff for the forum. I was the first official member of Pacers Digest  -- other than Hicks, of course. ;)

It's absolutely amazing to see the strides this forum has made since its inception. We'll have to plan something big for the pending one-year anniversary.

Btw, ns, awesome avatar. ;)

GO PONERS!!!!!

Ditto to the rest. I was one of the first five on both migrations.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I was mostly able to stay out of the fray at the Indystar, but although the RATS board has become a desolate wasteland as far as thoughtful content is concerned, there's still a few holdouts that have stuck with it. Twes/Pffl are both names I'd love to see on the PD registry. I saw A-Train around here a while ago. I actually really enjoyed posts by ojor and Chauncey, although they could both be a bit.... caustic.

Shoot, for sheer entertainment value you can't beat a good writerman diatribe on the importance of Robert Heinlein.

There's a long list, though, of people I ABSOLUTELY don't miss. And I'm glad the feeling seems to be mutual.

That was not realizing he needed me to set it up :)

Since I haven't posted my story, I'll attempt to do so now.

I was fairly new to the whole "message board" concept, and noticed that pistons.com had one of their own. I quickly went back to pacers.com to see if they had one, but didn't see one and figured that if I wanted to talk basketball I'd have to stick with the website that had one; so I was a resident Pacers fan on pistons.com for a while. It wasn't good...but I made do. Being the n00b that I was, I figured that the only message boards out there would be on the team website.

Anyway, one day a kid posted a thread on pistons.com along the lines of "look at what Pacers fans are saying about our last game..." - and had a link to Pacers Digest. Then, all was normal.

I came over with the original group from RATS. I had really liked RATS and then almost overnight it began to stink. My last real memory was PFFL's infamous post about Donnie and Isiah which I never had the opportunity to read.

Might as well tell my story.

I lurked around different forums mostly at the prodding of an old co-worker, PD was one of them, but the old software/server setup used before this one was so slow and painful that I didn't really came here often.

But mostly I didn't like forums in general. It was my office mate's shtick, I didn't see the appeal of reading 800 "LOL"s and 1200 "WTF"s a day. Nor did I like the need for many posters on other forums to start with "You're an idiot!"

Then last year, there was a brief AJ interview in the Star where he was asked about what he did recently on his computer. His reply was something like: "I was on the [indystar] forums. Those people are so far off it's funny." The "indystar" was added by the editor, and I fell for it. I went to the indystar forums to find out what he was talking about specifically and started reading. The season was starting and I had just recently moved out of the midwest, so I didn't have my Pacers fix.

Three or four weeks later, the brawl happened and indystar (already a mess) became unreadable. I gave PD another shot after I was reminded of it on an indystar post, and that's pretty much the end of that story.

I found a link to it in the kingsfanclub.com.

Before that I used to post a bit in the hoopsworld.com's forum. It has sections for all NBA teams, which is rather convenient, but it's mostly visited by Lakers fans. And Pacers fans here for some reason concentrate on Jessica Alba:)

I joined PD sometime before the start of the 61win season. I had been in serious basketball withdrawel as it was the offseason of the NBL. I had started devouring everything I could on nba.com to fill the void. I had been vaguely following Reggie ever since he torched the Australian national team in the '96 olympics. My basketball fix was still lacking so I googled for Pacers forum and discovered PD.

I was one of the originals PM'd by Hicks to join.

Along with Spicoli, TWES, PFFL and a couple of others (?) we made up the bulk of the Random Thoughts Thread that was dumped by the Star (two subsequent tries were made and unceremoniously dumped w/o explanation. Then PFFL went PFFL and the whole place started degenerating.

Came over here immediately upon it's open but (ok I'm going to be discreet here) everybody was running amok. John Belushi and Animal House had nothing on what was originally happening here. I didn't dare open this site at work because of the language. I told Hicks why I was returning to the RATS board and he agreed it was out of hand. IIRC that was when a Moderator was 1st introduced here. And it has become one helluva site since then.

I do still maintain dual citizenship with the RATS board but very seldom post there and almost never outside the *** thread.

Yeah, I still miss PFFL a lot. I remember hanging out with him and Bubbles at Conseco opening night. Last I knew they'd moved out west - Seattle, I think. Dunno if they've had any more kids. When they moved, the email address I had for them stopped being useful.

came here from RATS at the beginning, was involved in the randon thoughts banter with Twes, PFFL, BConn, geezer, and others.

I was on a long European vacation (2 weeks) when this forum was born and I had very limited access to the internet. Kinda surprised me what all went on in those 2 weeks.

I miss Twes and PFFL too. I sent Twes a PM on IndyStar a year and a half ago. He sent back a short reply a few weeks later:

"As you can see I haven't logged in for awhile. Sorry about the late response. I'm still alive and kicking. So far."

Then nothing. No posts over there ever since, and didn't see him pop up here.

My Bro (REL31) told me about this forum.

- Before becoming a member here, I used to goto espn.com's basketball (general/team) forums. That was probably one of the biggest wastes of time I've ever had on the net. Their forums are filled with insane 17 player trades and other nonsense.

The only good thing we (REL31 and I) got out of going there was one time, we managed to get the posters on the chicago bulls forum to believe that the bulls were changing their logo colors to salmon and denim. That was good for a few laughs.

I lurked and posted over at RATS for a while, mostly on the Colts board though. I knew of PD while I was there, looked a few times, but never joined. At the time, the Colts board over at RATS was absolutely overrun by New England Chowds that absolutely refused to let you feel good about anything the Colts were doing. Then one of the best posters over there, realityczar, completely went off on one of them that was doing nothing more than trolling. 'Czar got banned, and the chowd didn't, and that was too much for me. At that exact moment, Hicks posted on the RATS board that PD was opening a new Colts board to go along with the Pacers board. I joined, and the rest is history.

My best Pacerfan friends, Dancing Harry, Shade, ****** (he who shall not be named, but is on my MySpace), Jonz and Scott H all begged and begged for me to rejoin this site for decades. Within the past year, I relented as my defenses to assimilation had been worn down by their begging and pleading.
