Shaq rips Van Gundy for flop commentComment Email Print Share By Chris Sheridan

MIAMI -- The so-called "Hate Shaq" tour took a sharp turn in the opposite direction Wednesday, becoming the "Shaq Hates" tour.

I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy

Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O'Neal ripped his former coach, Stan Van Gundy, on Wednesday after Van Gundy complained about O'Neal flopping the previous night in a loss at Orlando, pulling no punches in one of the stronger diatribes of his 17 1/2 year career.

"I heard his comment. Flopping to me is doing it more than one time, and I realized when I tried to take the charge, as I went down, I realized that that play reminded me of his whole coaching career," O'Neal said of Van Gundy. "And one thing I really despise is a front-runner, so I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic. I've been there before, I've played for him."

Van Gundy coached the Heat during his first season in Miami before Pat Riley replaced him 22 games into the 2005-06 championship season. In the Van Gundy camp, O'Neal was blamed for helping engineering the change behind the scenes.

Shaquille O'Neal lashed out at his former coach with the Miami Heat, calling Stan Van Gundy 'a master of panic,' a 'nobody' and 'a frontrunner.'
Miami had the East's best record in 2004-05 but lost to the Detroit Pistons in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, and Van Gundy was replaced after the Heat went 11-10 to start the '05-06 season.

"Like I said, one thing I really hate is a front-runner, and I despise front-runners," said O'Neal, who used the word "despise" at least a half dozen times, then repeated his comments for Miami and Phoenix print reporters who were late arriving to his pregame rant.

When finished, he stopped an ESPN.com reporter and said he wanted to make sure one additional quote was printed: "Now I see why everybody who plays for him doesn't like him."

The episode that inspired this latest Shaq rant came after O'Neal took an elbow to the chest from Dwight Howard during a third-quarter Magic possession during Orlando's 111-99 victory and crumbled to the floor looking to draw an offensive foul.

"I was shocked, seriously shocked," Van Gundy said, "and very disappointed because he knows what it's like. Let's stand up and play like men, and I think our guy did that tonight."

O'Neal acknowledged he had flopped, but said it was the first time he had done it in his career. Over the years, O'Neal has been particularly critical of players (most notable Vlade Divac) who had flopped while trying to defend him.

"Flopping is playing like that your whole career. I was trying to take the charge, trying to get a call. It probably was a flop, but flopping is the wrong use of words. Flopping would describe his coaching," O'Neal said, steering the conversation back to Van Gundy. "I'm not going to just sit abound and let nobodies take shots at me, and he is a nobody to me. And if he thinks he can get in a little press conference and take shots at me like I'm not going to [give] something back, he's got another thing coming."

"I said I flopped, but flopping is falling and crying and complaining to the ref. I tried to take a charge. The rules say when a guy comes into your chest and you fall, that's an offensive foul, and that's all I tried to do. I fell, didn't complain, he made a great move, spun and dunked it, but flopping is the wrong choice of words. So that's all I've got to say about that, but again, I despise frontrunners, I despise them. And that's what he is to me."

Well I definately don't like him but the fact is that this is what Shaq typically does and he never gets criticized for it.

Stan went out of his way to make this public. He wasn't even asked about Shaq's 'flop' or anything and went out of his way to bring it up.

I'd throw him under the bus too if I was Shaq.

"It was a flop, but it wasn't really flopping."

May as well have been a "crab dribble."

One of the biggest mistakes our franchise has made in recent times was not getting the deal made to sign SVG as our coach. He doesn't put up with BS from anyone in his lockerroom, which apparently is part of why Riley took over the Heat during their championship season after SVG developed the team into a contender beyond it just having the superstar talent to be competitive.

If you think that was the franchise's fault you are sorely mistaken. That was all Dwight Howard's fault.

Which is basically why Shaq called him a front-runner.

What has SVG done? Seriously I would rather have his brother.

And Shaq did flop that game. More than once, but he would never admit to it. I have never seen him back peddle so fast in my life, on the court and off the court with his words.

Nobody every likes Goliath, do they?

well, i wasn't around to see wilt play and if he had run-ins with others but, pretty much everywhere he has been- shaq has trashed quite a few people. i don't dispute he is easily one of the greatest bigs of all time but, i have always believed he's also a lazy, super-gifted punk who despite getting the megabucks, would only decide to care if he felt like it (like he has recently). it wouldn't shock me at all if he retires with the suns, that he has some that he will trash there too.

Shaq is fun during the all-star weekend....other times it gets a bit weird....

It's possible SVG erupted because he was just over the whole Shaq thing. Prior to the game Shaq had said some comments saying he wasn't impressed with Dwight Howard because he hadn't reinvented the big man position in any way.

Shaq has a history of leaving on bad terms then trash-talking the ones he left.

Who cares? His best days are over and soon enough he'll be a memory and that's it. I for one, can't wait.

Personally, I love Shaq. He "gets" what entertainment is about and has been a great face of the game for 17 years. His presence will be missed when he finally decides to hang it up, but I don't think that will be very soon based on how he's played this season.

I don't even think these are his best quotes of the week. His shot at Chris Bosh was much better. lol

When he retires from basketball Shaq should get a job on the Young and Restless, he's good at soap opera.

This all comes back to Shaq bashing Howard. Howard would have been wise to ignore
the bag of hot air. Maturity not being modeled, that is for sure.

What did he say?

Chris Bosh said Shaq 'cheated' against Toronto when he scored 45 points, and said the 3 in the key must not be a rule anymore .... here was Shaq's response ...

I heard what Chris Bosh said, and thats strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men, ONeal said. Im going to do the same thing (in their next meeting) I did before - make him quit. Make em quit and complain. Its what I do.

I believe he meant Bosh was a SF masquerading around as a Center. That, and he kind of looks like RuPaul .... I think. lol

Shaq called someone else a front runner? Give me a break! I love it when he gets called out for the things he does wrong and then feels the need to insult the person instead of rising above it. Its not like what the two guys said about him isn't true. He is a pretty decent guy over all, there are just some moments when he needs to show a little more class.

When he retires they should just open up the door to the Hall of Fame and let him in.

That's great. I don't get the Chis Bosh love myself but I generally can't stand to watch Toronto play. Shaq summed it up perfectly.

Not when Goliath is an ego-maniacal, hypocritical jerk, they don't.
