If this has already be discussed here, I apologize. With the Bobcats coming on next year, which 8 players on the Pacers' roster do you protect? The top of the list is pretty obvious but it'd be interesting to see who people have toward the bottom.

Reggie
JO
Artest
Harrington
Tinsley
Foster
Freddie
Bender

--in no particular order-- ;)

JO
Artest
Harrington
Tinsley
Foster
Freddie
Bender
J. Jones or Brezec

That would be with Reggie's agreement.

let's go about it the other way around, instead of making a wish list to keep, who do we need to protect, taking into account contract status which is an important part as well.

Free Agents at the end of the year:

Kenny Anderson, James Jones, Jamison Brewer(?)

BIG question, does Reggie's contract contain an option for the second year, because in that case he can not be part of the extension draft.

Let's assume that they knew the rules of the draft when they signed Reggie and it would be silly not to use those rules, if they haven't then such is a major screw up.

That leaves 11 players to "protect" (without Reggie)

Some are definitely not questionable, you don't throw away major forces:

JO
Al
Ron
Jamaal

Then the talent in which you have invested a lot of time and money:

Bender

The talent you want to keep

Fred

that leaves the following players "fighting" for 2 spots

Croshere (no use to protect him, his contract does)
Brezec (will be protected)
Anthony Johnson (again contract, option? one year left)
Foster *
Pollard *

* depends on the position and "future" of Brezec, Pollie is less likely to be "taken".

So my list would be with contract questionables marked with a *

JO
Al
Ron
Jamaal
Reggie *
Bender
Fred Jones
Brezec
Foster

Unprotected roster members:

Pollie
Croshere
Anthony Johnson*

Yes Foster would be unprotected if Reg's contract was stupidly enough not made in a way that they would have the advantage at this draft time.
However, his contract makes it highly unlikely (just like Pollie and Cro) that he would be picked, the expansion is only allowed 2/3 of the cap, which is certainly not enough to give away millions to single players.

There is also the option to trade "future" or immediate draft rights in exchange for a "no pick" agreement.

Why protect Brezec and Jones, simple as far as Brezec is concerned, they still see him as the second coming of Smits and Jones' play speaks for himself, their price is of a nature that they would both be very interesting for the expansion.

PROTECTED

JO
Al
Ron
Jamaal
Bender
Fred Jones
Brezec
Foster

FREE AGENTS
Anderson
Brewer

UNPROTECTED
J.Jones (He was signed for two years.
Pollard
Croshere
Johnson
Reggie

Charlotte only gets a two thirds salary cap the first year. That means they only have around 32 million to spend. They simply are not going to take big contracts like Pollard's, Choshere's, and Reggie's, because they would be a sixth of their cap or more. Hence they will take J. Jones or Johnson.

wow, no one wants to protect reggie. he would still be a very interesting player for charlotte, i should think.

still, i suspect reggie won't need protection. donnie walsh must have the expansion draft in mind when he signed reggie to a new contract; all it takes is to make the 2nd year a player option, and presto, reggie's protected.

otherwise the protected guys likely are as above.

i wonder if we can tempt the bobcats to pick pollard by offering our 1st rounder. the only reason to do that is financial though, and we would probably have to pick up another big guy using the mid level to make up for pollard if that happens.

Can you imagine what bad karma the young Bobcats would bring down on their young heads taking away Mr. Pacer from his Victory Lap season and The Only City He's Ever Loved? The basketball Gods would gnash their teeth and seek everlasting vengence until the Bobcats are forced to relocate to Gnome, Alaska to escape their Everpresent Scowl. They wouldn't dare.

Reggie wouldn't play for them. He'd negotiate out of it, or just retire right then and there.
