View Full Version : The Pacers Are Growing Mustaches

This is from the same Mike Wells blog about the rotations, but I unfortunately didn't have time to post this part before.

Nonetheless, what is easily the best news of the season thus far deserves its own thread.

Mike Wells

http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider/archives/2009/01/are_they_in_or.html

Mike Dunleavy was able to convince most of his teammates to grow mustaches.

The players involved have until practice Thursday to have their mustaches or to have their beards shaved. I'm not sure what the consequence is for those who don't fulfill their end of the deal.

"I've never had just a mustache before," said Troy Murphy, who's one of the players that has to shave off the rest of his facial hair before Thursday. "I may use some Maybelline and color it in so that it can be nice and dark."

Foster's mustache has already grown in. All he needs to do is grow his hair out, put on a skin-tight t-shirt and some tight blue jeans to look like he's back in the 70's. Foster, too, said he's never had a mustache before.

Great idea or greatest idea?

Discuss.

I didn't realize the Pacers started a band. I love that they play Queen covers. They are pretty darn good.

Jeff Foster on lead vocals and piano. Didn't know he had those kind of chops. Or chaps for that matter. I wonder if he would wear that leather outfit to one of the games for us?

Mike Dunleavy ZONED in on his lead guitar part. His hair is always perfect.

Troy Murphy, Bass Guitar. Wearing his "go-to" tight sweater. He has seven of them that are all the exact same for each day of the week. He asked the cameraman before the song to get a close-up of his fresh manicure.

Travis "Animal" Deiner on drums. Keeping the rhythm and going nuts as he always does.

Unfortunately, two of the band members were fighting a bout of the flu for this gig. Danny Granger on Saxophone and Marquis Daniels on backup vocals. I love that they are able to get so entrenched in their music. They even have the outfits, hair, and soon to be mustaches to TRULY get into character.

No. Racism does not come into play. It's not a team unity thing like many of suggest. It's a team boredom thing. So basically I put the 5 biggest jackasses. I may be wrong but as far as I can tell these are the only ones who are doing it.

Love it.

Mustaches, bald head, shave one eyebrow, don't wear underwear -- whatever the team wants to do, as long as they're doing something as a team OTHER THAN getting arrested.

Good call on DunDun's part to grow 'staches. Nothing classier than the 'stach. Nothing.

Personally, I'll keep my beard. The beard works, but for some reason the 'stach won't. It's OK though, Dad's got enough 'stach for the 2 of us!

Indiana 98, Charlotte 93

I had a hard time watching this game, because every American-born white guy on the Pacers had a mustache. And T.J. Ford's mustache has become the most distracting mustache on an African-American since Chris Rock's turn in "I Think I Love My Wife."

It was truly, truly distracting. Mike Dunleavy Jr., Jeff Foster, and Troy Murphy look like guys whose baseball cards I owned some 19 years ago, and Indiana's interior man-handling of the Bobcats wasn't enough for me to forget it. I'd make a joke about the mustaches and a bar named Man Handles, but I think you've already connected the dots.

OMG - Man Handles? He's absolutely right!

When I was playing basketball yesterday, a guy on the other team subbed in and there was confusion for their defense. And so, one guy said "I've got Mustache" in reference to guarding me (I've got a goatee with a solid mustache). I blacked out from the excitement of being referred to as "Mustache" but I'm pretty sure I scored 30 points from that point on, which brings me to my main point: why would the Pacers ever shave their mustaches? I'm pretty sure that with those mustaches they were winning more games. They've done studies, you know, 60% of the time mustaches work, every time.

Enjoying your moment vicariously. If only you had a sidekick monkey to bring your sweat towel to you at time outs. That's damn near a full sitcom premise.

"Trimshots"* - a star basketball player struggles with day to day facial hair concerns and caring for a disabled monkey he recovered from the circus

*yes I realize that Trimshots also doubles as a porn film name and you wouldn't even have to lose the stache or the monkey.
