Buzz Up PrintSAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - The San Francisco 49ers will retire Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young's No.8 jersey on October 5, the National Football League team said.

Young, the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl 29, will become the 11th player in the club's history to have his number retired when he is honored at halftime of a game against the New England Patriots.

"Steve Young is an important part of the 49ers history and tradition," 49ers owner John York said of the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player (1992, 1994).

"He combined talent, character and a tremendous work ethic to become an incomparable performer and champion on the field. He was a model professional, and he influenced many of the younger players with his dedication."

Young spent the early part of his career with San Francisco as backup to legendary Joe Montana, then carved out his own place in club history.

Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

He remains the most accurate passer in league history with a 96.8 quarterback rating, and also holds the record for most touchdown passes in a Super Bowl with six en route to earning MVP honors.

The lefthander's 43 rushing touchdowns are the most by a quarterback, and he also owns the NFL record for the most consecutive 300-yard games with six (1998).
