I believe we once had a thread about football here, strangely enough called "Soccer thread", but I can't find it anymore, so here goes: a new fresh thread where you can talk about the Champions League, the qualifying matches for the 2010 WC, or hell even about the MLS.

Some useful links (if you know some other good sites let me know):

tonight - Turkey Vs. Belgium!

09-10-2008, 09:15 AM
After a hard fought victory against Estonia, we visit Turkey tonight: http://www.uefa.com/competitions/worldcup/news/kind=1/newsid=747671.html

A tie would be good, but I'm hoping for a win of course. We have to beat them at least once if we want the 1st or 2nd place, so why not now already? Though we will have to do without any defensive lapses then this time...my prediction is 1-2.

tonight - Turkey Vs. Belgium!
We'll stuff your goal with footballs! Or something like that.

That reminds me...I have to send my other Turkish friend a trash talking message too now that I still can ;)

i was supposed to watch the game with my Belgian friend but I just arrived home early from work - feeling awful...only a victory will make me feel better!

09-10-2008, 09:25 AM
for those who would like to catch tonight's games online...

Is a Belgian victory okay for you?

I'm going to watch at a friend's house. On the way to his place, there's a neighbourhood where lots of Turks live. If we win, I'm going to drive through and make lots of noise, like they always do when they win a game :D Or maybe I shouldn't...if we lose, I think I'll make a detour driving back home ;)

Well the only thing in Football that still interests me is the national teams playing each other. For the rest ... it's virtually always the club with the big money in the Champions League that can buy who they want and construct a team, while teams from the smaller countries who have to do without the ridiculous TV-money "subsidies" could at most have one relatively reasonable or succesfull season in the UEFA cup or mayyyyybe the Champions League, before the grasshoppers in the form of English, Italian, Spanish and German clubs come along and basically destroy those teams by buying their most talented players away.

This process makes particularly the Champions League (Ehhh Champions? How many champions do England, Italy, Spain and Germany all have? I dunno, but here we usually have one champion, not a dozen) INCREADIBLY predictable (and IMHO thus boring) as you almost always see the same teams. You could virtually predict now, without one match having been played, alteast HALF of the teams that will make it to the last 8. That's just wrong.

I pray for the day that something like a salarycap and/or luxurytax will be introduced (will both never happen though) and the playingfield is levelled between the stricter financial club culture of countries in Western Europe and the much more laid back financial club culture of countries in Southern Europe. A club like Real Madrid would have been declared banckrupt in most Western European countries with a... what was it 450mln Euro debt?

Mourning

well the Belgians are up by a goal right now...even though the Turks have been the one controlling the match...but gotta give credit for capitalizing on their opportunity...while we have yet to do so...

09-10-2008, 04:46 PM
meh...congrats to Belgians for getting the draw...its definitely a better score for you guys than us...

09-11-2008, 07:35 AM
I'm a bit disappointed with the way you scored the equalizer (that was so not a penalty) but you definitely deserved to tie the game. We played too defensively second half, Turkey was the better team. I don't think it's bad of a score for you guys. It's not like we'll easily beat you at home or anything. Winning all our games against the 3 lesser teams of the group will be very important. Especially Bosnia can be dangerous.

09-11-2008, 08:20 AM
oh yea...Bosnia can definitely showed how dangerous they could be..7-0 against Estonia? ouch...

i'm just disappointed how difficult we make everything...

In the NFC I'm looking at the Giants, Cowboys and Packers.

The AFC is wide open but the Colts, Patriots and Steelers should be in the conversation.

International games coming up this Saturday and next Wednesday. Belgium playing Armenia (must win) and Spain (oh wouldn't it be nice to win).

10-13-2008, 08:17 AM
comeback kings do it again...this time against Bosnia...we gotta stop shooting ourselves in the foot...

I'm hoping for a draw between Belgium and Spain! :D :D :D

10-13-2008, 08:27 AM
2-0 win against Armenia. Not a great game, but we did what we had to do.

A draw against Spain would be nice, but I hope we're at least going for the victory. Unfortunately, our sissy *** coach will probably again play super-defensively, like against Turkey. Also rooting for Estonia Wednesday ;)

then again...if Spain does demolish you guys...it'll just be us Vs. Them for the #1 spot...

10-14-2008, 05:24 AM
And what if we demolish them? :eyebrow:

10-15-2008, 08:48 AM
Against Spain tonight.

10-15-2008, 04:43 PM

Estonia sucks!

We are the comeback kings! We can only score when we eat a goal!

Estonia couldn't manage to score - so the game ended in a boring 0-0 draw...grrrrrrrrrrrr

10-15-2008, 05:45 PM
We at least deserved a point tonight. Spain had probably like 65% ball possession but we had the best chances (1 goal unrighteously denied for offside), incredibly frustrating to still lose then. Great game to watch though.

On the plus side....you guys lost 2 points. Now we have 2 very tough games against Bosnia coming up....in half a year.

11-26-2008, 12:58 PM
Bumpaloo. I have to say I've grown a bit tired of the CL. Always the same teams dominating. The Uefa Cup on the other hand has become a lot more interesting after the restructuring. There are always some surprising teams there.

03-28-2009, 04:07 PM
big night tonight...

us Turks gotta play against the Spainards back to back...going to be tough

03-29-2009, 08:41 AM
The good: Getting a point even though we played like crap
The bad: Playing like crap and only getting 1 point vs El Salvador

Agreed. The second half was EXTREMELY fun to watch though, the best football I've watched in awhile.

Onward to Trinidad & Tobago, which is a little scary because they're much better than El Salvador in the rankings. We're going to have to not play like crap to get the win.

03-29-2009, 09:35 AM
both Spain and Turkey played like utter crap and Spain still managed to get a goal out of it in the end which sealed their victory...they have not lost a match for 30 games now #_#

Belgium got abused by Bosnia - surprise team for WC 2010 maybe?

04-01-2009, 07:47 AM
Oh man what a disappointment that game...went to see it with some friends. Had to drive 1.5 hours to barely arrive in time due to the horrible organization...traffic jams all over the place. Only to find out the Bosnian supporters received a lot more tickets than away teams usually do...they're a lot more fanatic than the Belgian fans so they were louder than us, it was like a home game for them. Thanks a lot, Belgian football union.

Anyway, we played like crap (our brilliant coach said we should play the long ball ) and deserved to lose...nothing to say about that. Although it could've gone either way: at 1-1 we were the better team, then the Bosnians fans started to make some fireworks...results: game stopped for 15 minutes and away was the momentum...Bosnians did score some beautiful goals I must say. Let's hope for revenge tonight...it's the only chance we got left.

04-01-2009, 10:25 AM
Belgium has the hardest schedule in terms of having to play away games...they played the most home games in the first half of the schedule...

should be an interesting night all around the world thats for sure

04-01-2009, 04:03 PM
winning 1-0 at half to end up losing 2-1 to Spain as Spain keeps their undefeated streak...which is now at 31 matches #_#

04-01-2009, 04:46 PM
bye bye South Africa......:disappoin

04-01-2009, 05:17 PM
when did Bosnia learn to play football like this? they're scoring goals left and right.

04-01-2009, 05:44 PM
Bolivia 6
Argentina 1

Poland 10
San Marino 0

who says there are never any goals in football :D
