This is an actual monster, some sort of rodent-like creature with a dinosaur beak. A tipster says that there is "a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island"http://www.boingboing.net/200807292210.jpg

I saw this on Fox News yesterday morning and had difficulties finding a story about it elsewhere, so thanks for posting a couple links.

I'm going with the viral marketing hypothesis at this point. Isn't there going to be a sequel to Cloverfield?

Yeah that makes some sense.

It looks like a mix between a dog, human, and turtle to be honest.

I love conspiracy theorists:

A tipster says that there is "a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island"

Yup - Plum Island. There are two facilities responsible for testing Foreign Animal Diseases (FAD's) - one in Beltsville and when they need to test the heavy hitters like Anthrax or Foot & Mouth, they go to Plum Island. I know a couple of PU Vets who go there and some of the testing that's gone on.

Pretty strict biosecurity - there's no mammalian wildlife (there are some birds) and any that make their way there are killed.

They don't breed animals - they're looking for modes of transmission/infection and vaccine development.

As for the picture, other than the beak it looks like a baby rat. Or it could be a chick embryo though it looks like it has a tail.

It's already on snopes.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/montauk.asp

The Montauk Monster

Claim: Photograph shows an unusual animal carcass found on a beach in Montauk, New York.

<noindex> Status: Undetermined. </noindex>

Example: [Collected via e-mail, July 2008]

People say that this monster washed up ashore in Montauk, NY. Some say itís real others say itís just another fake picture.

Origins: The so-called "Montauk Monster" is a carcass that was supposedly found and photographed by three women on 13 July 2008 in front of the Surfside restaurant on a beach in Montauk, New York (on the South Shore of Long Island). The image of the "monster" has provoked much debate over whether the creature photographed is a concocted hoax or a real animal, and if the latter, exactly what kind of animal it might be. Various laymen and animal experts have tried their hand at examining the photograph and determining what it depicts, and as yet there seems to be no consensus on the matter.

For example, Newsday reported the opinion of William Wise, director of Stony Brook University's Living Marine Resources Institute: William Wise,

director of Stony Brook University's Living Marine Resources Institute, after looking at the photo and consulting with a fellow biologist (who knows land creatures), disagrees [that it's a dog].

He knows what it isn't.

A raccoon. ("The legs appear to be too long in proportion to the body.")

A sea turtle. ("Sea turtles do not have teeth.")

A rodent. ("Rodents have two huge, curved incisor teeth in front of their mouths.")

He said the general body shape looks like a dog or other canine ("Coyote?"). But that the "prominent eye ridge and the feet" don't match.

He said the feet and face look "somewhat ovine" ó that would be like a sheep ó but sheep don't have sharp teeth.

Wise's best, educated guess: "A talented someone who got very creative with latex."

But Wise also offered what he called a next-best guess: "A dog or coyote that was diseased and has been in the sea for a while."
Others asserted that the creature was in fact a raccoon, however: [Montauk local Noel Arikian said,] "In photos there appeared to be a beak. It was just a tricky angle. It's a dead raccoon. That's what it is. It's undoubtedly a raccoon, the same teeth, paws, the right size."

Larry Penny, East Hampton's director of natural resources, agreed and added that when raccoons get old they wander off to marshes to die. High tide might have floated one out of a marsh and into the sea."

"No other animal has a body like that," Mr. Arikian said.
For now, the Montauk Monster is reportedly rotting in the backyard of a local resident who remains unidentified by the creature's finders.

Yeah, a coon that died and washed up on shore and just HAPPENS to be completely denuded of hair, nice and even, no patches left here or there. Just completely lacking in hair or fur. Plus the pooling and putrification are right for something that died at that spot or perhaps died very soon before washing up on shore. At least going by what I have seen on human bodies.

So what is it? I think one of the Burmuda Triangle UFO's crashed and this was a pilot or passenger that died.

BTW...did ya see where one of the top Anthrax people commited suicide just before being arrested for the anthrax scares of a few years back?

DisplacedKnick

Personally, I think it's a dead critter with a head photoshopped on.

I'll believe this until the "unidentified local resident" takes it to a university or other reliable lab.

Does anyone know how big the thing is? I'd want to see its hooves/feet, too, before coming down on one side or another.

But the main thing I notice is this: It's dead.

People always get excited about mutations and freaks. They do occur, but nature has a way of dealing with them. Most mutations are lethal.

This could be a faked picture or it could be a real animal. If it is a real animal, it could be an ordinary animal that doesn't resemble itself in that photo. Or it could be a freak that couldn't survive.

I bet it stinks right now.

This could be a fake or it could be real. If it is real, it is simply a freak that couldn't survive.

It is mathematically provable that some particles....and therefore, some effects....are prone to travel from the future to the past. This abomination is probably the first observable 'pre-effect' or time-ripple, if you will, of the black hole particle accelerator due to be turned on in a few days.

Don't say I won't warn you.

Here's a site with a different picture. The mouth is not a beak. The lower jaw is tusks or incisors. The top jaw is exposed bone.

I'm still not clear what it is. I wish there was a can of soup or a nickel or an SUV in the picture to help estimate the size of this beast.

Thought I'd bump this what with the bigfoot body being found and the video of the chupacabra in Texas. There is a press conference tomorrow afternoon in Palo Alto, CA for the bigfoot people. It being in California has led to a belief that all three of these events are related and that it could be a very complex viral marketing campaign for a video game or movie. Especially since the Bigfoot body was originally found in Georgia.

So it's either that or the world is ending and the crypto creatures are coming for our asses. Stay tuned.
