Harrison has been cleared to practice by his doctors, and everyone (including Harrison) is enthused about his recovery. This is by far the best news we have heard on Marvin since his injury last September.

It will be full speed ahead for Marvin Harrison when the Indianapolis Colts hold their first training camp practice Friday morning at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.

The team’s eight-time Pro Bowl selection and career leader in every receiving category has been cleared for practice, according to coach Tony Dungy.

“The last I heard from our doctors’ meeting was Marvin would be ready to go when we get there,’’ Dungy said this afternoon. “He’s been running and feeling good and everybody, including Marvin, is really enthused and optimistic about how that’s gone.’’

Dungy conceded the team will take a conservative approach to how much work Harrison gets. He missed the final 11 games of the 2007 regular season with an injury to his left knee. Harrison, 36, also had an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee during the offseason.

Dungy thinks no repercussions are looming from Harrison’s connection to an April 29 shooting in Harrison’s hometown of Philadelphia. Police questioned Harrison after one man was shot and a young boy injured by shattered glass. He was not considered a suspect in the shooting, but it was confirmed that a gun owned by Harrison was used in the incident.

“I’ve been given reason to think that Marvin’s part of it will not be anything that will come up for us during the year,’’ Dungy said.

The following players are expected to open camp on the physically unable to perform list:

>> quarterback Peyton Manning (knee);
>> safety Bob Sanders (shoulder);
>> defensive end Dwight Freeney (foot);
>> guard Ryan Lilja (knee);
>> tight end Tom Santi (knee); and
>> linebacker Tyjuan Hagler (pectoral).

With the exception of Hagler, all should be ready for the Colts’ Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears.

That is Coltspeak for:

Marvin will be on the sidelines for most of the camp and any participation will be extremely limited. ;)
