I'm not completely clear on our salary situation for this year. I know next summer we are going to be way under, but do we have any more money to spend other than the MLE this year?

Doesn't it seem like Jamaal Magloire is a free agent every year?

Presuming Hibachi and Jamison are both headed back to DC...yeah...pretty much.

The restricted crop is obviously considerably better, but we're probably not paying enough to pry any of those guys away from their current team, although Biedrins would be a god's send.

Maybe a few of the "other notables" could be in play for us though.

Meanwhile, Okafor, Iggy and Ben Gordon are giant idiots.

Without counting how much we sign Brandon and Roy to, we owe a total of $67,037,429 to 14 players and could go up to about $70 mil by signing Brandon and Roy to their rookie contracts for a total of 16 players.

Murphy - $10.126984 mil
Dunleavy - $9.0 mil
Rasho - $8.4 mil
Ford - $8.275 mil
Marquis - $6.8642 mil
Tinsley - $6.75 mil
Foster - $5.5 mil
Jack - $3.08424 mil
Granger - $2.329805 mil
Baston - $1.9764 mil
Diener - $1.62 mil
Shawne - $1.57296 mil
Graham - $826,269
McRoberts - $711,571
Brandon - $1.75 mil ????
Roy - $1.25 mil ????

I'm guessing that Brandon will probably start off with a rookie salary of about $1.75 mil and then Roy with about $1.25 mil for the 2008-2009 season.

At best.....I'm guessing that we will be buying both Tinsley and McRoberts out so that we can get to 14 players and will then look to package Marquis and Shawne in some "2 for 1" deal for an additional Frontcourt player.

I've suggested it before......for this season.....but I think the best that we are going to be able to do is to sign Croshere to come in as a 5th/6th rotational Big Man that can come in for about 5-10 minutes a game to provide some rest for Murphy and Foster. Otherwise....given our Financial situation.....we are going to do very little when it comes to making any FA moves.

There is one guy on the list that I wouldn't mind seeing as a Pacer, if we could get him to come cheap. PJ Brown. He could really help out the frontline for this year. Some guy like that, a skilled veteran big man, would be the most realistic option I think. I am sure Boston will give him the league minimum though, and it's not much of a choice for him between us and them.

The Wizards just handed $150 million to two players who don't play defense... No wonder they'll never get anywhere in the playoffs. Hopefully Nick Young blossoms into a star at the 2.

Defense wins championships, why don't these teams get it? There's the concept of being loyal to your fanbase and keeping the faces of your franchise in town, sure. But if it compromises long-term success - and you know it - giving out these massive contracts makes no actual sense.

But I agree, I don't think he'll get back to the level he was after two knee surgeries. It really was more of a PR move on their part. Everywhere you go in DC, everything is Agent Zero.

Arenas will still get the votes though. It always is like that. Year after year when Shaq's production slid and slid, he still made it.

Then, according to my sources, the Warriors quickly burned the phones and offered former Warrior Gilbert Arenas a maximum-level contract, one that would pay him more than $100 million over five years. My source told me that Gilbert received a flurry of phone calls from the Warriors in the first 30 minutes of free agency....Also, I heard from a very reliable source that the Sacramento Kings contacted Arenas and said they are willing to do "whatever it takes" to land his services even if they have to "trade their entire team." Guess the Maloof brothers want to matter again.

You never know with Gil, he loves DC but everybody has a price. In terms of the Kings, trading "the entire team" for a shoot first PG coming off two knee surgeries might be a little much.

I'm surprised so many teams are interested in Arenas considering how little effect he's had on the Wizards win/loss record. He may put up pretty stats, but they come at the expense of the rest of the team, the exact opposite of what you want out of your point guard.

As for who I like for Indy in free agency, Craig Smith or Ronny Turiaf would be solid pick-ups, or maybe throw a fairly small contract at 23 year old Chris Richard and have him compete with McRoberts for 3rd string PF/C minutes. Ryan Gomes also looks good and could probably play a lot of PF in our small ball scheme, but he's likely outside of our price range, and will get at minimum the full MLE.

I wanted to bump this up & update the options a bit. This is from NBA.com. I'd cut & paste it but it doesn't format well.

http://www.nba.com/transactions/movement2008_name.html

I did see a couple guys that I could live with Bird adding, and yes, I know we still have one too many. We need to shore up the 4 spot a little, even if it means we have to drop a player that plays another position.

The guys I was looking at are...

Andre Brown of Memphis. He's restricted but I think he can be had.

Austin Croshere, solid vet & locker room guy, Unrestricted that could come cheap. Not my first chose, just an option until we find our guy.

Nenad Krstic, restricted out of New Jersey. Looks to be the odd man out. Put up great numbers before his injury. If the knees good, he would be a steal.

Carl Landry, restricted from Houston. Enough has been said on here about him. Nice fit.

Brian Skinner, unrestricted from Phoenix. A surprise option here. Solid vet that could fill the void until we get the upgrade we need.

I'd check into Krstic's knee to see how close to 100% it was. Brown would be my next option. I think he's kinda slipped under a lot of peoples radar because he played off the bench for Memphis.

Reguardless we need to upgrade our starting 4 but I like this group as options for our backup spot. That is other than Krstic, I think, if healthy he could come in here & start.

By the way, I still would like to get Kirilinko for Murphy & Daniels, but thats a whole other thread.

Don't flatter yourself its not even close. You have to taste success first and step out of mediocrity first THEN mess it up to be like us. :) DC did the right thing though. Fans there are just happy to be invited to the party and before Arenas and jamison (and mjs cameo) it was fair to say they were an insignificant franchise. Why ruin a good thing? at least no matter if the team fails the management can always seek sanctuary in the thought that they gave the fans what they want and its on the players shoulders now. Unless Gil goes ronron its safe to say that they have done a good job protecting their investment.

With that said what's caron's status? Is he gonna be a FA soon? Wonder how much this bumps his asking price.

NJ Nets agree to sign-and-trade for Keyon Dooling
by Dave D'Alessandro/The Star-Ledger
Friday July 18, 2008, 9:29 PM

Rod Thorn is about to fill his most glaring vacancy, and now all he have to do is wait for Orlando to do some clerical work. The Nets have an agreement in principle to make a sign-and-trade deal for free agent Keyon Dooling, a combo guard they have pursued for years, and he'll fit right in as a reserve for starters Vince Carter and Devin Harris.
"I'm hopeful ... that we can make a trade," was Thorn's closest statement resembling a confirmation Friday night.

An eight-year veteran, Dooling would be acquired by making use of a $3.3 million trade exception the Nets obtained in the Jason Kidd deal last February. That will now be transferred to the Magic, who will prepare a two-year contract that calls for a $3.3 million salary next year and a $3.5 million salary for 2009-10, with a partially-guaranteed third season that will pay him a pittance.

The process is expected to be completed by mid-week, after Orlando prepares the contract and the Nets give the 6-foot-3 Dooling his physical. But the process won't begin until the teams run the trade past the league Monday morning.

The trade gives the Nets a solid backcourt trio, with a feisty, long-armed third guard who can defend both spots effectively. But it also gives them 16 guaranteed contracts, so they have stepped up their efforts to move point guard Marcus Williams, who now becomes the odd man out again.

The most logical landing spot for Williams might be one of the many teams who have their own trade exceptions -- Seattle has two, in fact -- and wouldn't mind taking a chance on a work in progress with a $1.2 million price tag.

"I have no problems with going to 16 contracts," Thorn said. "We've got other things to do. Even if this does happen, we have work to do,and we have a lot of time to do it in."

Dooling, a 28-year-old Floridian who made $3.5 million last year -- he averaged 8.1 points and 1.8 assists in 72 games -- was looking like the odd man out in this free agent market until the Nets came calling. The Magic had offered him the biannual exception, which calls for a mere $4.1 million for two seasons. His agent, Rob Pelinka, rejected the offer, and Dooling himself called it an insult.

"I don't even know why they offered that bi-annual because I rejected it right away. I don't know if they were trying to devalue me or whatever the case may be, but that wasn't acceptable," Dooling told Florida Today. "It's ridiculous. That's not a suitable offer for someone who was a good player on a good team. It wasn't a market value offer and that's the bottom line."

The Nets had no such misgivings, and they had no other immediate plans anyway for the trade exception, which expires in February.

I remember there was talk on here in another thread about who would be impacted by the signing of Anthony Johnson in Orlando. Looks like Dooling is on his way out to New Jersey and Marcus Williams needs a new home. How much does this affect Tinsley's stock now with Williams on the market?

With the exception of Landry, none of these guys are dramatically better third-stringers than Maceo Baston. And none of them would beat out Foster/Murph for the second string. And that doesn't include the possibility of Shawne/Granger getting minutes at the 4.

I just don't see what adding these guys would do for us.

Just another competitor for us in our efforts to ditch Tins. However, this one's merchandise would be younger, much more economical, and expire quickly. Combine that with some of these also ran or near also ran types like a Jason Williams still floating around and, when it's all said and done, I think we'll still have to wind up trying the buyout route despite all our best efforts to the contrary. I suppose I should never underestimate some unfortunate team's desperation though. Hope springs eternal?
