Spurs guard Johnson arrested on DWI charge

Police arrested Spurs guard DerMarr Johnson over the weekend and charged him with driving while intoxicated.

Johnson, 28, was released Sunday morning after posting $1,000 bail. A breath test showed the 6-foot-9 basketball player had exceeded the legal limit of 0.08 percent, police said.

“I just had a few cups of wine,” Johnson said as he left the city's detention center.

About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a traffic officer pulled over a black SUV on Loop 1604 near Interstate 10 West because it was traveling 20 mph over the speed limit, weaving and following other vehicles too closely, police spokesman Joe Rios said.

The officer noticed that Johnson, the driver, smelled of “intoxicants” and his speech was slurred, Rios said. After a field sobriety test, Johnson was taken downtown, where he submitted to a breath test.

“He was very cooperative,” Rios said.

Asked if he believed the arrest would affect his position with the Spurs, Johnson said, “I don't know. Probably so.”

Tom James, a spokesman for the Spurs, declined to comment, citing a lack of details.

“At this point, our main focus is working to gather more information,” he said.

Johnson's career has been bumpy. Two years after joining the Atlanta Hawks as a first-round draft pick, he crashed a Mercedes-Benz into a tree and broke his neck in 2002. The injury kept him off the court for more than a year, and Atlanta let him go. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.

Last year, police stunned Johnson with a Taser and charged him with resisting arrest and interfering with police during a disturbance outside a Colorado nightclub, according to the Associated Press. A lawyer for Johnson at the time said he had been breaking up a fight between two women.

Couple of points:

I had no idea he was on the Spurs roster

How stupid can you be to drive over the speed limit after you had a few drinks. Just stupid, but it is amazing how often it happens

Cookout or backyard BBQ I'd bet.

I'd be a lot more sympathetic to his possible innocence if it weren't for the other situations. .09-.10 area can get you busted even if you were capable of driving on par with your regular ability. Speeding and poor driving are afflictions many sober people have and it sure sounds like it's true for this guy too.

The problem is that if you've had a few drinks you've got to tone it down to avoid situations exactly like this. Just dumb on his part.

So how does this tie to the Pacers, let's get that headline in shape before this ends up not associated to the team somehow. ;)

"Spurs guard Demarr Johnson, who attended college near Indiana and within about 100 miles of Club Rio and has played against the Indiana Pacers on multiple occasions, . . ."

Totally. You gotta go with the coffee mug or mason jar.

Real Pacer fans either drink the koolaid or the hard stuff. We've not had much choice these past few years....

No, no, no.....

We take the bag out of the box, and pass that around. That's how us college students do it anyways.

Remember this is San Antonio. Drinking is a hobby down here. Heck, we even invent holidays in order to party.

Yeah nothing like some Boone's farm after a hard day... hehe jk

I'm more of a fan of fine stouts. But I'll tell ya what, I won't drive anywhere even after just one drink. Even if you are competely under control and know you can drive fine. It is just too much of a risk for your own personal freedom, your insurance payments, etc...

In Houston you could get a margarita in the Taco Cabana drive through and at 7 AM I could get a bottle of beer out of a barrel of ice at the front door of the gas station.

Don't mess with TX.

And yet the bars mostly closed by 1 am and liquor stores well before that. Go figure.

I'm with Redd and Gyron, red Zin or Cabs right now, though I bounce around on my drink of choice.
