Next saturday it begins. I see some of you have already put up the appropiate avatars. Of course Belgium is not participating again because we've decided we cannot longer embarrass the other countries over and over again. Or was it embarrass ourselves...? Anyway, this leaves me with the quest for a country to cheer for. Suggestions?

In all honesty, I love me some Spain, they've got some really nice young players.

Yikes, within minutes...merge perhaps?

Merge it is. And to say that almost nobody cares about this, but still there are 2 threads being made at the same time, a week before it begins. That's some pretty crazy ****. The forces of the universe continue to amaze me.

Greece? Nah, sorry. I am one of the many that hated Greece 4 years ago when they became champions with their ultra-defensive play. I like teams who go for it, attack. That's why I mostly have sympathy for Spain, but they tend to be a let down in big tournaments. When Zidane was still playing, I used to root for France, now I'm not really sure what has become of their team. I'm looking forward to see them play though, same with Spain and Portugal. And it's always fun to laugh with the Dutch when they're losing, so I'll try to catch most of their games too. Hopefully it will be a less frustrating tournament than 4 years ago ;)

Hey, I thought you were Greek? How come you're also rooting for Sweden?

I'm definitely Greek, but I grew up partly in Sweden so I'm kind of a sports bigamist...it's legit. Basically, I lived and died with that 94 WC Bronze team and have been a die hard fan ever since.

As for the Greek style of play, oh man...it's a pain. And definitely nerve-wracking. Basically, we knew that if the other team scored, we would probably lose. That's A LOT of pressure. I'm still amazed how we won.

The thing with Euro Cups is that all groups are hard (unless you're Germany, in which case you always get the easiest group in championships). Hell, in 2004 teams like Italy and Spain didn't even make it out. Turkey's group is, at first glance, easy. However, Portugal has the world's best player (IMO). CR is still kinda dangerous, though definitely old. Switzerland is nothing to shake your fist at, either.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The World Cup is where favorites go to win titles. At the European Championship, which begins next weekend, anything goes.
Such as Greece stunning the 16-team field to take the crown four years ago. Or Denmark getting into the tournament only because another nation was thrown out, then winning it all in 1992.
The Soviet Union and Spain won their only major titles at Euros. So did the Czechs when, as Czechoslovakia in 1976, they stunned West Germany on penalty kicks, the only final decided by a shootout.
So while current world champ Italy, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain are considered front-runners to appear in the June 29 final, who's to say that Romania, Turkey or even those spunky Greeks won't walk off with the trophy?
Not that anyone will be caught off-guard by these outsiders.
"I'm sure all our opponents have done their homework," Greece midfielder Giorgos Karagounis said. "But ... we do have a strong team."
Indeed, aside from the World Cup, Euros has the best field of any soccer tournament on the planet. Some would argue that without the frequent second-rate squads that qualify for the World Cup _ hey, the United States was abysmal in two of the last three global championships -- the collection of teams at Euros is superior to any other event.
"It's going to be the most difficult tournament ever. All the teams are at a similar level. Anyone can beat anyone," said Germany coach Joachim Loew, who assisted Juergen Klinsmann as his nation made the World Cup semifinals two years ago. "As for us, we work well as a unit, our system and our organization are well rehearsed."
As it must be, because there will be few if any gimmes at Euros. Yes, co-hosts Austria and Switzerland are among the weaker entries, but the Greeks were rated so low in 2004 that they regularly were predicted to go home after the first round.
One nation that won't be leaving after the opening round is England. The country where soccer was born didn't even qualify.
That should make security issues less tense. But both hosts are adamant that this will be as peaceful a tournament as the 2006 World Cup was in Germany.
In fact, Austrian and Swiss officials have leaned on their neighbors for help making Euros safe.
Germany is sending 850 police officers to support Austrian colleagues. Switzerland's federal council approved funds for a maximum of 5,250 operation days in crowd control: 4,500 by German police in Basel and Zurich, 750 by French officers in Geneva.
"Close international cooperation is indispensable in coping with an event such as the Euro 2008," Swiss security spokesman Martin Jagged said.
Games will be played in Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Klagenfurt in Austria. In Switzerland, the sites are Geneva, Bern, Basel and Zurich. All of them will be televised live in the United States for the first time, by ESPN and ABC.
The openers pit the Czechs against the Swiss at Basel and the Portuguese playing Turkey at Geneva on June 7. The final will be in Vienna.
As for who might wind up there, the favorites -- if that really means anything at Euros -- include soccer's biggest achievers, the Germans and the Italians.
Loew still has the core of the team that brought excitement and an attacking style to the 2006 World Cup, and the pressure of being at home won't plague the Germans.
"We have been preparing for two years for this tournament," Loew said. "The tension and the concentration are rising within me, but I am really looking forward to it. We are well prepared, it's time for the championship to start."
Look for Germany to ride the offense provided by veterans Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack, and rising star Mario Gomez.
Italy also has a new coach, former Azzurri standout Roberto Donadoni. He's been criticized for being too inexperienced for the job, but he suggests the experiences of winning Italy's fourth world title won't be much help in this event.
"The fact that Italy is the world champion is important, but we were the world champions two years ago," Donadoni said. "It's a new day now and a different tournament, and I think we're up to the task."
France coach Raymond Domenech, not exactly a shrinking "violette," is certain his team is ready to emulate the 1984 and 2000 squads that won Euros.
"For me, it's France who will be champion of Europe," Domenech said.
Both Italy and France have an extremely difficult chore in the first round, from which the top two teams advance to the knockout stage. They are grouped with the Netherlands and Romania, both talented but unpredictable.
"I'm a little worried about Romania," Italy's outstanding goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said. "They've got four or five highly talented players that can hide the ball from you."
Also hiding among the outsiders will be Turkey, Poland, the host countries and, dare we say it, Greece.
The Greeks were 80-1 choices back in 2004, but their stingy defense and timely scoring carried them to their only significant international title. They even beat the home team, Portugal, twice _ in the opener and in the final.
Could it happen again? Sure. At Euros, it always seems possible.
"We had 31 points after playing 12 (qualifiers). That has to say something," Karagounis said. "We have ambition. We have a good team, and we believe in ourselves."

Holland all the way! :woohoo:

We seem to be rather unlucky the past few International tournaments with regards to the groups we are placed in.

I mean in the last WC Argentina, Yugoslavia and Sierra Leone. And now Italy, France (the last WC finalists) and Romania (definitely not a walkover either).

Looking at some other groups makes me feel JEALOUS at how easy some of them seem :pullhair:.

Anyway, I think we do have the ability to surprise either Italy or France and end up second in the group.

I can't waite for the tournament to get started.

I think we'll finish second in our group, behind Spain. We lost on penalties four years ago to a tough Dutch team but I thought we had one of the best teams then. This year I think we're again one of the better "second-tier" teams. The injury to Elmander hurts a bit. We might be looking at Zlatan-Henke from the beginning of each match. We'll see.

I have to say that the Swedish strikers are interesting. Larsen should be getting his pensionfunds soon, but he's an interesting guy. I can't really stand Zlatan, but to see him provoking some other countries players makes for a good laugh as do some of his swandives :-p. Anyway, not bad at all. Usually Sweden has a pretty solid defense where they rest upon. Also usually there midfield was pretty defensive minded, but they do have some nice players in there who can create opportunities forward.

Now Greece... let's just say that Rasky and I can aggree upon something. The sooner this team is out the better it is for the tournament IMO. Really boring, unimaginative almost cowardly placing virtually your whole squad in defensive positions. IF every competing team were to play like they do then 2/3 of the games after the group phase would be decided by penalties and the remaining games would be 1-0 (... or 0-1 ;)). It's TOTALLY boring and unattractive to look at aswell. Just my :twocents:.

Like I said between those two teams I like Sweden much better.

Spain is usually a pretty interesting squad in qualifying for tournaments, but somehow they ALWAYS manage to have off-days in their most important matches during tournaments ALWAYS leading to early eliminations. They play attractive and nice though, which is something that has to be respected.

France. Always dangerous. I don't care that Zidane is not with them anymore, they still have enough talent. I'm hoping their team won't have very good chemistry or won't "feel" all the other players intentions very well (because Holland is in the same group as the French ;)). There defence and midfield are always of top-quality and they always have atleast one top-striker, though somehow they a lot of times have trouble scoring easily in tournaments for some reason (maybe because of the system they play, I dunno).

Italy. Always one of the most talented teams in whatever tournament they play and the current world champion. I'm always astounded by the horrible way they usually play and still somehow manage to "steal" victory in a lot of times the last few minutes with getting one or two chances all game long. Considering what they have in talent they should be almost obliged to play more attractive, but they are what they are. Always a top threat and never to be underestimated.

Germany has been playing very attractive the past 2-3 years and considering there past that is surprising and very, very refreshing. I like what I see from them. Much more attacking and ballcontrolling play. They do again have one of the easiest groups (YET AGAIN!), so they can start slowly and play themselves into form, which is traditionally when they become most dangerous. This is the team I have meeting the Italians in the final and winning it all. We'll see what happens.

The Netherlands/Holland. Well I hope we will just have a very good tournament and swipe away the last WC memories against Portugal (prob. the worst match I have EVER seen from both sides in more then one way). As traditional the midfield and offense are high-quality and ballcontrol, passing and creativity from midfield will play an important role in how far this team can go. Personally I think it's the best Dutch team since Euro2000, prob. the deepest and best passing and offensive minded midfield in the tournament. Traditionally also the defense is the weakest part of this team. I'm not really convinced about central left back Bouma, but who knows. The positive from the defense is though that they can actually support the attack by moving up either of the flanks.

For this team to go beyond the group phase it will prob. need to defeat either Italy or France and Rumania for sure. That's a HUGE feat. Facing the finalists of the last world championship in the group fase is something I don't remember happenning before since the tournament expanded a bit about 28 years ago. I do think that Holland does have the ability to defeat France or Italy if it is carefull in finishing the chances if will undoubtedly get, keeps the opponent running after the ball instead of the other way around and the defense remains focused. That's a lot of if's, but not impossible (have to remain positive with a group like this).

Btw.... ehmmm... Rasky laughing about the Dutch losing . Jealous because we actually get to the tournaments and usually decently far into the knock-out stages? :-p

;) Hope Belgium will make it to the next WC btw, seriously :).

Wow! We are SOOOOOOO totally and utterly jinxed now    ;).

Anyway, Italy is always tough even when they don't appear to be that good. There defence is always amongst the best in the world and they always have atleast one striker that only needs one or two chances to score. Even if they have been defending for 88 minutes and had 56 shots put on their goal they still could win with one of those few attacks. Very frustrating that can be I can tell you (Euro2000).

Anyway, we almost always go pretty deep in the tournament. I like that a lot of people seem to automatically count us out of getting one of the top two spots in the group. I hope that can be used as extra motivation.

Hmmm.... whatever happens we have, HAVE to beat Romania or my girl will so put it in my face (as she is Romanian ;)).

i'll be rooting for spain, but they won't win. as will holland. they'll both crash out before the final, and italy will win the whole thing in a repeat of the 2006 WC final.

usually i root for france in intl tournaments (up until the last wc) as i support arsenal but as there is very little representation from them (flamini and gallas are now officially ****s) nowadays (abidal being anywhere near the team when clichy is available is a travesty), ill be watching out for spain.

Who does everyone have in the final?

I predict a Germany - Italy final with Germany winning it.

For some INSANE reason you can meet a team you were in the group stages with again in the knock-out stages BEFORE the final game. WHO thought of that one?! Great, so even IF we do survive the group then we can meet either France or Italy again before the Final! :soapbox: So, we get to "enjoy" them TWICE in the same F****ing tournament!

The countries in the other leg with, offcourse, Germany in it better count their blessings.

Austria deserved to win, respect to them. Croatia was really dissapointing in their win, last 15 minutes of the first half and the whole second half they were so pressed against their own goal that it seemed like they crossed the halfline just a couple of times.

And Germany is just a couple of steps above all these teams in this group, they really got it easy.

was a bit disappointed with Poland's performance...thought they would get out and attack Germany a bit more...

I disagree. Going more on the attack would have left there defense even more vulnerable then it looked now. Attacking more would, I think, have meant Poland running into a German knife. I think that Polish goal that was called for off-side should have counted though. The referee's were instructed just before the tournament to not call off-side when they see a very close situation and they can't be 100% sure.

And, yeah, Germany does have it easy with this group and also relatively easy all the way up to the finals, if they get that far, compared to the team that comes up on top in the other leg of the tournament. The only other powerhouses they could face is Portugal and maybe the Chech Republic (who are getting old pretty fast now).
Compare that with Italy, France, Spain, Holland and even Sweden, Romania and the last European Champion, Greece, and you know what I am getting at...

I can's stress enough how lucky Germany and Portugal are and how BADLY the person who thought of this schedule for the tournament should NEVER get a job in something like this again.

Isn't the schedule randomized in terms of groups?

Chewy

Isn't the schedule randomized in terms of groups?

No, they have 4 pots from where they draw the teams, the teams from the same pot all go to different groups, the problem is the strongest teams have to end up in the same pot the next 4 in another and so on.

http://www.uefa.com/live/competitions/euro2008/draw/2008.ft/draw_basic.html

Now how Netherlands end up in the same pot as Greece, Austria, Switzerland, and France with Poland, Turkey, Russia i have no idea. Is it based on Fifa ranking? Thats how you get Group C.

Guess I'm not the only one who noticed...

"BERNE, Switzerland -- OK, I could have made this point before the tournament, but it's worth making again, because something isn't quite right here. Arrigo Sacchi, who led AC Milan to two European Cups said he'd love to see "Marco and Roberto meet in the final."

He was referring to van Basten and Donadoni, his two former players who have graduated to leading Holland and Italy, respectively. A nice thought, except it can't happen.

Because those two countries are on the same side of the draw. As is France. And Spain. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden. And Adrian Mutu's Romania. And Russia, a dark horse. And of course, Greece which, lest we forget, is the defending European champion.

So what's on the other side of the draw? Well, Germany. And Portugal. And Croatia, which could pull off a surprise, I guess. The Czech Republic is always tricky ... and that's about it.

With all due respect, this is about as lopsided a draw as you can get. The whole point of seeding teams is to ensure that the better ones -- the ones people actually want to watch -- don't knock each other out early. And to ensure that teams are rewarded for what they did before.

Yes, some will point out that on the French side of the draw (the good one) there are six teams ranked in FIFA's top 20, while there are five on Germany's side, which isn't much of a difference, is it?

Possibly. Except for the fact that FIFA rankings are silly, unrepresentative mathematical exercises. And, if you're going to play the FIFA ranking game, please tell me in what parallel universe does it make sense to have No. 3 (Italy), No. 7 (France), No. 10 (Holland) and No. 12 (Romania) in the same group?

But the real absurdity is the tournament's structure and the fact that the two sides of the draw are kept apart until the final. Which could mean that, for example, France, which plays Italy on June 17, could end up facing the Italians again a few days later in the semifinal.

Does that make any sense? No. Especially when the strength and depth of the two halves is so lopsided. Use whatever metric you like. The German half has won seven international tournaments (six of them -- three World Cups and three Euros -- courtesy of the Germans). The other half has won 12.

The German half has five players who made the European Footballer of the Year Top 50 in 2007. The other half has 20.

I just hope that, whatever happens, we get a clear-cut winner and that this column is the last thing you have to read about the controversy over the tournament's structure. It would be a real shame if Euro 2008 were ruined by something as avoidable as this.

Great game! I thought 3-0 was a bit harsh, but they definitely deserved to win. Holland played great as a team (name one player who didn't play really good - maybe van Nistelrooij), but I've been saying it before: Italy's just not that good. Maybe they missed Cannavaro, though I don't think that would've changed much. The Netherlands were reigning in the midfield. Italy didn't convert their chances, but Holland could've scored (van Nistelrooij) a couple times more as well...I didn't see France's game, I do think they have a stronger team than Italy though. Already looking forward to friday's game...

Congrats on the win, belli. I didn't get to see the game....I did see Portugal - Czech Republic though. Not a very good game. Neither team deserved to win. In the end, the game was decided by a few strokes of genius by Deco and Ronaldo (who both didn't play well the rest of the game). Portugal is gonna have to play better if they wanna reach the finals, play more as a team. Then again, the strongest team they can possibly meet on their way to the finals is Germany. While the other half of the table has France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. It is pretty ridiculous.

well the Polish goal was definitely offside...

the penalty was pretty much a make up call by the refs for letting that offside go...

a draw sounds about right for the result...the group got a lot more interesting...

Well... we still have only played one game and France will go at it 100% tonight as they have to get a win. They will not be facing a Rumania with 10 players playing in defensive roles trying to deny football taking place, which makes ball-movement hard. They will play The Netherlands which hasn't allowed many goals the past couple of years, but our defence is not generally our strong suit. The French will have room to manouevre unlike in their first game which is good for them. OTOH they will also face a side which also likes ballcontrol and ball-movement itself, so the battle will most likely be fought and probably won at midfield, combination football and with counterattacks.

Getting a little nervous allready :shudder:.

This group is by no means decided and nothing is sure yet...

France had 2 or 3 good chances to tie the game. If you don't finish those, you're never gonna win. The Netherlands were very efficient and scored some beautiful goals, but they escaped a few times. Could've been a completely different game...4-1 is just way too much. And yes I was rooting for France after a while because they really deserved to tie the game, and against Holland because the Dutch commentary was really annoying (the Flemish is even more annoying, that's why we're watching Dutch TV). It brought out my anti-Holland gene all over again...every good Belgian has such a gene you see.

I hope France still qualifies. Ribéry is such a joy to watch. And Henry looked to be gaining some form during the game. Although he should've at least scored one more goal. Their defense didn't look so good today. Getting a bit old perhaps.

Raskolnikov
06-13-2008, 05:22 PM
In the other game I thought a draw was about right. If one team deserved to win it was Italy, but in the end they were just not good enough again. All the long balls to Toni...Romania has a pretty good team: very strong defensively and also good in the combination, sometimes better than Italy. They could've easily been the 2nd best team in any of the other groups. And they can still in this one.

Mourning

4-1 was flattered, but I gladly take it :D. 2-1 would have been fairer. Anyway, I think when you look at it the French did get some chances, but they didn't convert them and they mostly weren't nearly as played as our major chances were.

Look at it... most of their chances were medium and long-range shots, compared with mostly short and medium range shots from ours from players coming out of the opposing players backs or moving to the side of "decoys", that was completely different from what France did. You might also argue that the goal we did allow was a bit of a defensive lapse as the player defending Henry should have and could have slided the ball out of his range. Good finish from Henry still btw.

I think the main difference though for us has been chemistry and converting opportunities. This is a team, while I thought France was sort of a team, but more a collection of individual talents.

With regards to the Belgians and Anti-Dutch feelings... dunno what that is, they consider us arrogant, but are we that? Maybe. I think we are just confident or sometimes boasting a little bit because inside we might not be as confident as it seems. Then again the Belgians have a tendency to call us "arrogant" whenever we win a game, no matter what, so that's ok.

Maybe it's a sort of jealousness because their national team, sorry Rasky, hasn't done anything noteworthy the past decade (or more) and hasn't really produced superstar players or a style of play or game philosophy that has actually enriched the game of soccer in it's history.

Maybe it's because of some (adolescent) Dutch tourists that visit Antwerp in the weekends, I dunno, but this is definitely a one-way thing as Dutch people in general definitely don't dislike Belgians like they seem to (sometimes) dislike us, sometimes rightfully so btw.

Sure, we're jealous now. I wish we'd just beaten the world and vice-world champions. I wish we'd have that kind of offensive talent. I wish we'd just qualify for a big tournament again, for starters.

As far as you can generalize, I think Dutch are more confident than Belgians, or at least they show it more. Sometimes they show it too much (and that's where we jump to the occasion and call them arrogant ;)), and sometimes we show it too few (the so called "little Belgians" attitude). With regards to the anti-Dutch feelings, most of us are just joking around with a bunch of clichés. I'm not (kidding). The reason I was annoyed in this particular case was because the commentator was talking (with that silly Dutch accent :-p) like they were destroying France. Which was not the case at all, in despite of the score. Well, guess it's normal that you get a little carried away in games like that...overall I like the Dutch commentary. It's a lot better than that on the Flemish commercial TV station.

Deserved? Well.. IF we go along that line. We deserved to be the 1974 and 1978 World Champions, especially the 1978 game. In 1994 in the quarter finals of the World Cup we went from 0-2 to 2-2 and were clearly the better side in the last part of that match against Brasil, but Brasil got a free-kick and had the ball ricochet a little and bounce before our keeper and in our net the ball went, losing the game for us. Kluivert deserved to have his header go into the net in the semi-finals of the World Cup of 1998 in France against Brasil, which would have been the decider and send us to the final. We deserved to have won the 2000 semi-final against Italy handsdown, but somehow the penalties and chances we got didn't go in.

There's so many games we deserved to have won, but didn't always do in the end, because we got the chances but in the end had badluck or couldn't finish the chances we got.

I consider it a sort of justice, especially against the likes of Italy and France. Particularly Italy with their truthfully ugly soccer of 2006 and several other tournaments. Scared of taking the initiative against sides such as Albania and so on. Placing a huge focus on defense and preventing the other team from playing and disrupting play as much as possible. I don't think Italy deserved the World Championship in 2006 in the least. I think the Australians got royally screwed by the referee against Italy in I think the quarter finals when that Italian player made a blatant dive and got a penalty for it.

Looking at it more widely I'm VERY, VERY happy that most initiative aborting and "sitting back and letting the other teams play, while we just defend and make one or two counter attack during the whole game, score one goal and win the game"-teams are getting eliminated at a high rate in the first round.

About France getting 1-1. Sure, could have happenned, but didn't. Also maybe France should have had a player send-off in the first half for striking one of our players in the face. That's a redcard according to rules, so if applied strictly I dare say that the French wouldn't have had that penalty you think they deserved. I'm not sure about it, really. Ooijer held his hands near his body, not high or aimed towards the ball. To give a penalty for someone literally shooting on your hands (not pointing out) from 2-3 meters away is a bit weird, as was that rule that Panucci was not off-side in the first match against Italy.

To me he was off-side and there's a gap in rules concerning that that needs to be addressed, just like I think Ooijers 'hands' ball should not justify a penalty kick.

None the less looking at the whole game I think the victory against France was a deservedly one. Like I wrote before 4-1 was flattered, but certainly 2-1. Then again I am Dutch, so what do I know? ;).

I wonder how Turkey will fare against Croatia btw, very interesting. I expect the Germans to beat Austria tonight, not so sure about 4-0 or 4-1, but who knows? :)

Also will Sweden or Russia go through to the next round? Hard to tell. I'm still betting on Sweden, but the Russians do have a coach that has had a history of letting his teams perform better then they really are. Sweden will have to remain very, very concentrated for that match.

To me he was off-side and there's a gap in rules concerning that that needs to be addressed, just like I think Ooijers 'hands' ball should not justify a penalty kick.

Agreed. It's only hands if you make a movement towards the ball with your arm, as far as I'm concerned (and the van Nistelrooij goal should not have counted, but it was well deserved at the time, so I didn't really mind ;)). But in the same action, Ooijer hit it twice with his hand. One time with a cross, and once with Henry's shot. I don't know if both were involuntary, I would have to see it again. In the end, Henry just should've scored there.

None the less looking at the whole game I think the victory against France was a deservedly one. Like I wrote before 4-1 was flattered, but certainly 2-1. Then again I am Dutch, so what do I know? ;).
2-1, I can live with

Yup Russia seems to have gotten it's stuff together well after that horrible opening game for them against Spain. Very good 2-0 victory over Sweden and it could have easily been more.

Not a team you want to underestimate, especially since they have a very good coach who always seems to get the best out of his teams in major tournaments.

Sweden... they looked so slow and I was a bit dissappointed by their speed. I would say that they definitely need to infuse some younger players in their team who can throw up the pace a little and can get past a few opponents when asked to do so.

I don't think they played that bad against Spain. The combinations were already there, they had some chances but didn't convert. Also, the return of their playmaker Arshavin was huge.

But their defense was really awful that game. That's why I think the Netherlands will beat them in the end - let's hope Russia scores first though, then we'll see a great game...

Yeah, true they did create a number of good chances against the Spanish team, but were a bit unlucky and their defense REALLY stunk in that game.

And, no, let's not hope Russia scores first ;) :D :D :D.

Either way not an easy opponent IMO, but then again there aren't any easy teams left anyway.

I'm not terribly upset about sweden just because this goes along with what I expected us to do. The media, and by extension most of the population here, has an almost god-like infatuation with Zlatan and him solely being on the pitch should be enough to take us anywhere.

Well, anyone with half a brain or understanding of soccer knows it doesn't work that way. Even so it's almost funny to see how surprised the media is that we got kicked out.

We're aging something fierce and the next few years should be tough. End rant.

For now I'm rooting for Germany. My wife is rooting for Holland.

I think Turkey's goalie being out will hurt them. Moreover, Croatia is really good. That being said, you gotta like the Turks going into this match with a "nothing to lose" attitude. ALL the pressure is on Croatia and this isn't a veteran team used to dealing with that pressure. Fun game tonight - I wouldn't be surprised to see Croatia pulling a Spain here.

Wow! Spectacular ending to the game. I think in regulation time the Croats were a little better, while in the extra time the Turks were better. I think the second that equalizer was made Croatia had lost the match they were allready into "we WON!!!" modus operandi when that happenned and then got smashed mentally. The way they took the penalties reminded me of the 2000 European semi-final between Holland and Italy. I feel for them.

Good for Turkey though, but look at Germany to practically "sleep walking" into the finals in that leg of theirs. The only real opposition beying Portugal getting there. Sorry Turkey supporters, but I don't think Turkey will stand a chance of getting in the final because they won't be able to field what is it... 4 of their regular players including their starting keeper? That's really a lot and I don't see Germany conceiding many goals, beying overrun and/or even less likely Germany beying physically overpowdered by Turkey. Really hope I am wrong though...

Anyway, congrats Belli, granger and Turkey :). Go kick those German asses in the next game.

Props to the Russians they were clearly the better side tonight and had the better coach.

I think that Russian defender should have been send off at the end of regulation time as the ball clearly did not go out contrary to what the linesman said and the violation happenned after that. That would have been a pretty big difference. Again the Russians over the total match were the better side, but god I hope the next tournament we get to have an easier road towards the final as some other teams seem to be getting sometimes it seems.

You know, in the pregame show here, the hosts went through all the major tournaments quickly, and one thing they noticed that a team that dominates the first games never wins it in the end, the teams that have draws, losses and very hard wins come through in the end.

It's tooo tough to maintain excellent form over the weeks, you gotta gain momentum gradually i think.

According to the rules, whether the ball went out or not, the yellow card should've stayed (which makes perfect sense). On the other hand, I don't think it was a yellow card in the first place...maybe Holland wasn't playing at their best last night, but I just think the Russians are that good. Best team in the tournament. That doesn't mean they'll win it unfortunately.

The rules say a given yellow card can't be withdrawn. OTOH I don't think it was yellow card either and in that light the right thing happenned.

I still think we hit the team that knew us better then ANY other team in the tournament, because of their coach and staff (Korneev also played a lot of years in Holland) and used precisely the tactics that were needed to disable our own passing game, while taking advantage of a few weakeness. They were the better team last night, but I would have loved to have seen us play some of the other sides still in.

And NO, lol, Germany is NOT better, not this tournament I refuse to believe that, just incredibly lucky with this pisspoor seeding and the set up of this tournament which allowed them to gradually grow into the tournament and avoid virtually all title candidates (save Portugal)on the way to the final, while the other leg was loaded with title candidates. And, yeah, I know you were making a little joke with me, 31andonly ... just saying ;).

The severity of Terim's selection concerns has even led him to consider playing the reserve goalkeeper Tolga Zengin as an outfield player. I only saw the last 10 minutes. Too bad for Turkey. Germany didn't play one good game in this tournament and yet they're in the finals....Spain or Russia will crush them. Surely they will, right?

Looking forward to tonight's game. May the best team win.

So I dont watch soccer (football) at all. How come teams walk out with kids?

kids are advertisement - McDonald's advertisement....

cause you didn't want to watch the game - everyone suffered from a crappy video broadcast...it was such a pain to miss large chunks of the game due to technical difficulties...

Not terrible, but not really good either.

I hope Spain doesn't win. I hate the music they play when they score...

Spain was clearly the better side after they scored. Before that, the difference wasn't that big...I thought Villa getting injured was actually a good thing, because the presence of Fabregas allowed Spain to take over the midfield. Three beautiful goals btw.

I'll be very surprised (and disappointed) if Spain doesn't win this.

Have to aggree with Rasko here. Congrats to Spain! Sorry for the German members, I normally have no problem with the German team really, but to me they got a much too easy road to the finals and I thought the only pretty good game they played was against Portugal, so to me Spain was much more deserving and they maintained a high level of play throughout the tournament.
I also think Spain (like us) got a lot of raw deals through the years and this is some form of justice.

I think pretty much everyone is universally happy for Spain. They're a fun team to watch and very deserving. They're pretty much the polar opposite of Greece winning 4 years ago, dispelling the myth that you need to play the Greek/Italian defensive style to win.

it was a rather fun game to watch...would've gone with Germans to win it only for the sole fact that we would've been eliminated to the champs...but i won't complain with Spain winning :)
