Woohoo, the Cubbies are playing well!

Came back from an 8-0 deficit today! :happydanc

And way to go Jim Edmonds. I know he may an error today, but it was nice to see him do well at the plate! I know he's a former Card, and needs to do it more often, but I found myself feeling sorry for him, while of course pulling for him now the he's a Cub for the time being.

It was nice to see him contribute with his bat some. Woohoo! :happydanc

Even though the Cards and Astros are playing well in the Central, the Cubs are the only team of the three built for the long haul. The Cubs have something this year, it just feels different than any other season. Their offensive numbers (average wise and run scoring wise) are mind boggling right now. They lead the Majors in hits, average, runs scored, slugging, and of course wins. The season is long I understand, but they could not hae asked for a better start.

This has actually been a pretty crazy season if you haen't been paying attention. If the season ended today, your AL playoff teams would be Tampa Bay, Chicago White Sox, LA Angels, with Boston as the wild card. That's messed up. In the NL it would be Florida, Chicago, and Arizona, with St. Louis as the wild card. Not quite as messed up but still crazy.

The Cubs are playing extremely well. 8 wins in a row, and the best record in the majors. I just hope they can keep it up!
They definitely have the bats in the lineup.
Hope the pitching can improve, and the bullpen can be consistent

What bothers me is this, they always have a late season collapse. I hope the best for them but expect the worse!

The Cubs are doing something neat today that everyone should check out.

They are having a throwback day for the first two innings and showing the broadcast as they were shown in 1948. It's black and white and uses the same camera angles and graphics and everything. If you want to see it hurry. It's on WGN and it's the 2nd inning already.

BTW...

Anyone that would like an MP3 ringtone of the Go Cubs Go song PM me with an e-mail addy. I can e-mail the file to you, how you get it onto your phone is up to you. It's fun. Once my phone started ringing Go Cubs Go! While I was on a layover at the St. Louis airport. If looks could kill I'd have died on the spot.

Breaking news on ESPN right now....

The Cubs just traded for Rich Harden from the A's....

LINK (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3478902)

Zambrano and Harden is a helluva 1-2 punch. I can't imagine getting into the playoffs and having to face each of them twice in a 7 game series, and hope that your pitching can keep their bats in check. Fun fun.

I like the Harden deal a lot, I just hope he can stay reasonably healthy!

I would hate Mark Prior... the remix to happen!

If Harden stays healthy, Z, Harden, Dempster, Lilly is a really solid 4 man rotation

I feel the Cubs messed up by not getting Mark Ellis in the deal. Keep in mind Sweet Lou knows how to use speed. Ellis is a poor mans Brian Roberts. He has speed, a good glove, and acquiring him makes Theriot & Derosa more dimensional.

They didn't mess up at all. If they feel they need more speed, they can trade Marquis for some. He's almost certainly the odd man out in that rotation now and his value is actually pretty high.

I feel that acquiring Mark Ellis would have put them in the driver's seat. The Brew Crew is going to be a lot tougher with C C.

C.C only pitches once every 4-5 days. They lost yesterday with Sheets on the mound. And they're the ones who have to make up ground.

Even if Harden doesn't pan out, they still have their ace in Big Z, another all star in Dempster. Lilly is going for win #10 today, and Marquis and Marshall can give solid outings as well.

They also have Lieber for long relief, whom can start if need be, and Gaudin whom they got with Harden, can go out a start as well.

I think the Cubs should be set for a run at this thing.

Once Soriano gets back, he'll add to the offensive firepower, they have role guys, and players that just know how to play.

If Harden is healthy the Cubs should be pretty scary :happydanc

I like the deal with Oakland but would have loved for the Cubs to pick up Ellis. I do not think Marquis is a good Pitcher at all. It will be interesting to see if Dempster holds up. I like Marmol & Wood in the pen. I just feel the Cubs would have benefited with more speed.
The Brewers did benefit by picking up C C. It will be very interesting to see how the NL Central shapes out this year.

The Reds are up 7-3 on the cubs right now
Lily went 2 2/3 Innings
Wuertz came in and gave up a three run shot to Griffey.

The Cubs can still win easy.

Fontentot makes it 8-5. Slowly but surely hopefully, if the bullpen doesn't give up anymore runs.

Cards are down to Philly 4-1 I believe
Brewcrew up 2-1 on the Rocks the last I checked

Do you see Chris Carpenter coming back and pitching well for the Cards down the stretch?

He has the stuff to come back and pitch well, the Cards just better make sure he's ready. Rushiing Mulder back wasn't smart, though I thought/think he's finished anyways. And Carpenter hasn't pitch in a wow himself, but he's definitely ace material, so if he gets back healthy, it can only improve the team.

I think Wainwright is the guy they need back right now. He was pitching well early in the season, and I'm sure the Cards will welcome his return

1. They get Dunham from San Fran
2. They acquire Jay Gibbons

I agree, though I think the reason the Cards haven't really been mentioned is b/c they just seem to good to be true. You look at their pitching staff, and up and down their lineup and a lot of folks would look at them as an overacheiving bunch.

Of course there's Pujols... nothing needs to be said there.

But you look at Ankiel and it's still a feel good story that some may think is too good to be true. Though I think he's really good.

Then you look at your Ludwick's and Shumaker and wonder is it a fluke, or are they good.

You have Glaus who is another injury away from being a bad acquistion

Molina is a really good catcher... but that's not much

You look at pitching and Jason Is seems hit and miss. You look at Lohse's history and it just seems like a team who's record is too good to be true.

Who knows, only time will tell.

As a Cub fan, both the Cards and the Brew Crew worry me, but looking at the team makeup, the Brew Crew definitely worry me more, and you're starting to see why

The Reds have a little momentum. Not sold on them making the wild card. 9 games out, don't think so, but they may be the best sleeper team that doesn't make the post-season.

the whole thing with Cincy is they do not how to win games. They either score 8 runs; or score 4 runs and give up 8 runs. They are to inconsistent. Cordero is in a slump right now. Burton is injured. It is nice to see Bruce heating up again., but they have a 25% chance of making the wild card.

I just saw on ESPNnews that the Cubs are getting ready to call up Jeff Samardzija. Looking for a link right now....

Here's one I saw earlier today...

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/post/Wood-appears-headed-for-DL-Samardzja-could-get-;_ylt=AiERkfnrk8OoF0UesR2ij8g5nYcB?urn=mlb,95729

Amid the expected comings and goings on the Chicago Cubs' roster Wednesday was the lingering and worrisome issue of closer Kerry Wood's health status. The blister on his right index finger hasn't come close to healing the way the club expected by now, and Wood could be facing another trip to the disabled list after seeing a specialist in Chicago today.

That might open the way for hard-throwing prospect Jeff Samardzija to make his major-league debut.

Considering the level of tenderness in the finger and the fact Wood hasn't pitched in 13 days, the chances seem remote he could return any sooner than next week in Milwaukee if not during the first homestand in August. Wood threw on the side Wednesday to keep his arm active but threw only changeups, without using the index finger.

''Is it getting to be a concern? You're darn right it is,'' said manager Lou Piniella, who has been keeping setup man Carlos Marmol in reserve as his fill-in closer. ''We need the guy back, no question.''

Because rules prohibit backdating a DL move more than 10 days, Wood would be required to be sidelined at least five days from the time of a move, a stretch that looks like a safe bet pending the outcome of today's examination.

I never said that they were going to make it, I just said that they have shown some good signs of life. They either blast 7 homers in a game or don't score at all. I do think that team does have a lot of talent (Bruce, Bailey, Keppinger), though.

Well don't look now, but after the Brewers tied the Cubs at the top of the division the Cubs have beeaten them three straight and are crushing them today, for a soon to be 4 game sweep. This should effectively end that. A four game sweep at the hands of your biggest rival in your own park where they beat your two best pitchers like drums has got to be demoralizing.

For the first time in my life - and probably the last - I want the Dodgers to do well so Joe Torre can tell the Yankees to SUCK IT!!!

It's already great that the Yankess are missing the playoffs for the first time in forever after they shoved him out the door - if he took his new team to the playoffs it would make it that much sweeter.

Once they make the playoffs I'll likely hate 'em again of course.
