I don't care what anyone says, this is the best event in all of sports.

I have Kansas, Temple, and Georgia in the first batch of games. Kansas and Georgia are looking good so far.

Shade
03-20-2008, 12:21 PM
Georgia/Xavier and MSU/Temple have the same halftime score. 35-26.

Good games thus far. I have Xavier in the Elite Eight, so I'm a bit nervous right now. Georgia is playing very well.

Agree with Shade - this is the best 3 weeks of sports in the country. For me it's the best of anything except maybe the Olympics - I can get pretty fired up for that too.

Go Cornell!

Shade

MSU putting the hammer to Temple, and Xavier has come back from 11 down to take a 3-point lead.

03-20-2008, 01:15 PM
Georgia is slipping vs. Xavier. That is irritating, I had Georgia winning the game. My logic was that Xavier had a lot of trouble with my school (George Washington) during one game this year, and GW wasn't even good enough to make their conference tournament.

travmil
03-20-2008, 01:23 PM
Bt Xavier won several games against ranked teams. They are battle tested, and pi$$ed off for letting Ohio State off the hook last year. I have them winning this one. I picked Kansas and MSU in the other early games, so if Xavier ends up winning this one I'm 3 for 3.

Robertmto

I got Xavier, Kansas and Mich St. I'm perfect baby!!!

Wow I just realized half of my brackets have Xavier and Half have Georgia. wooooooooow

Do you even fill out a bracket, UB?

LOL. Yes I actually do - I like to feel a part of things here in my office - plus it is a good excuse not to work. In fact, I have been drafted to keep track of the pool this year - luckily we have a pretty small office and only 17 participants.

I like to give all you NCAA guys a hard time - the strange thing is years ago I would have agreed with you that the tournament was the best thing in sports - but somewhere in the early 90's I stopped following college ball and now I just get bored with the actual games. (and I cannot stand Billy Packer - he thinks the audience is dumb)

I'm really looking forward to a couple of the games tonight though at least these are teams I've heard of and I know almost all the players too:

Celts @ the Mavs - 8:00
Lakers @ Utah - 10:30

Should be a couple of great games.

Shade

Yeah, none of my upset bids are coming through so far. :(

Is it just me, or have there been fewer upsets in the last couple of tourneys?

American University looking pretty good against Tennessee. In the crowded DC sports market they are given absolutely no coverage (we have Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, Maryland, and to a lesser extent Virginia and Va. Tech) so I would love to see them have their day.

Indiana's 3-0 and so is the Big Ten - now IU has to hold up its end.

Eric Gordon with one of the all-time worst performances in NCAA history. He just went from a top-8 pick to a late 1st rounder. A 6'2" SG with no handle, no defense, a poor shot selection, and a penchant for choking.

03-21-2008, 10:49 PM
It was pretty clear to everybpdy why he didn't play well today, and his game didn't have anything to do with it.

Per the usual, you're wrong.

Gordon is, at best, 6'3". Strike 1.

Gordon has little skill outside of his shooting, and even that plummedted as the season progressed. Strike 2.

Gordon has proven to be mentally weak. The bigger the game, the bigger egg he lays. Strike 3.

Unless Gordon fools the scouts during pre-draft workouts, he'll go no higher than the bottom of the top-10.

He's not a top five pick. Depending on who IU ends up getting as a coach he could always transfer somewhere else, but I doubt he'd do it. I'm sure Illinois would welcome him with open arms.

Agreed. There is a lot of Eric Gordon hate out there now and I'm not sure I completely understand it. He did struggle after the Sampson firing but I believe there are other factors involved in that. Overall it just seems like certain people find it convenient to make EJ the scapegoat when IU certainly had more problems than his play. Outside of DJ, you can question the play of every guy on that IU roster.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gordon stayed in school. He went from the top 5 to the bottom 5 of the lottery with his horrible second half of the season.

No friggin' way.

I have never seen someone look so absolutely miserable while he's on the court during a game as Gordon did last night. I doubt he goes to another class.

As for draft position, what you do in the tournament very rarely drops your position much though it can raise it if you have a great run. I think Gordon should stay in school another year - there's a lot about his game that could use some help. But he'll be able to go top-10 anyway and he'll go for the money.

D-BONE
03-22-2008, 09:04 AM
PLEASE!!! Do not let Gordon come back.

In a way, the whole Gordon story from day 1 at IU has encapsulated what a fiasco the season turned into.

Although Sampson certainly was capable of getting more out of the team than Dakich, it's as if the program sold out to a two-man approach at the expense of fundamental team philosophy and development of other players.

Kofi

NBADraft.net: #6
Draft Express: #7
ESPN Draft Tracker: #8

Those are the top-3 draft websites. None have Gordon as a top-5 pick. I think ESPN is the closest, as I see Gordon going no higher than #8, depending on how he measures up.

Unless....a lot of big time talent decide to stay in school, in which case Gordon would go higher by default.

Xavier's physicality is impressive. A hallmark of them all season. Purdue needs to pull it out somehow.

I was hoping someone would get hot but it didn't happen. They out-executed us and out-physicalled us. Couple of calls I wish we'd gotten but that's the way it goes.

I'm happy with our guys anyway - the season far surpassed my expectations. We'll be tough next year and if Juwan puts on some beef and improves his footwork we might be very tough.

I have to admit, Purdue was very impressive this year. Before the season started, I honestly expected them to finish around .500 and go to the NIT. They really came together as a team and learned to play the "right way". I do not look forward to playing them the next 3 years, thats for sure.

Conclusions that can be made thus far:

Brook Lopez is Tim Duncan in disguise. I've watched a lot of Pac10 basketball this year, and I have Stanford in my final 4, but even I was surprised to the level Brook took it to late in the game.

Kevin Love is also a primetime player. He is better then NBA mock draft sites think, I've been saying that all year. Kevin Love is going to be an excellent NBA player and will be worthy of a top 10 pick in this draft. If we make the playoffs and he slides to us, it will be a total win-win. I think when its all said and done he'll be top 10 anyways though.

Defense still wins in the tournament. Threes are a huge part of the college game still but Washington State, UCLA, Stanford, Michigan State and Wisconsin all won their games by dominating defensively.

Michael Beasley had a great college career. NBA say hello to the frankenstein blend of Shawn Marion, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony.

I'd been impressed with Coach K's ability to adjust the way he coaches this year for the guys he has. He always has a dominant low post scorer and that's how he has won championships in the past.

However I soured on them late in the year and I had Arizona beating them in the second round because it became late in the regular season and in the ACC tourny that they were simply not quite there yet as a team.

That's pretty much the earmark of Purdue basketball. It remains to be seen if Painter can get the talent to make a serious title run. If he can, they could be scary in a few years. If not, they'll continue to be a good team that makes it to the second or third round every year.

Butler did get jobbed, and I think proved that getting the #7 seed was a disgrace.

However, they made a TON of mistakes. Too many turnovers and too many missed layups. They capitalize on ANY of those and they win in regulation.

I've thought ever since I moved to this state that there should be an Indiana college basketball tournament. The Great Hoosier Cornshucking or something.

Take those 5 teams, add Ball St., Valpo, Indiana St & Evansville (are there any other Div 1 teams?) and a few out of state invites to even things up and just have at it in Conseco. It would be a blast.
