If NIT bid doesn't come ...

Virginia set to play in inaugural CBI tournament

Posted: Saturday March 15, 2008 10:56PM; Updated: Saturday March 15, 2008 10:56PM

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Sean Singletary's career at Virginia isn't over.
The school announced Saturday that it has already accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational if it does not get a bid to the NIT.

The CBI is a new tournament that will involve 16 teams. It will be staged by The Gazelle Group, which is based in Princeton, N.J., and runs the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer and the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

The NCAA invites 65 teams to its tournament and the National Invitation Tournament, which started in 1938, selects 32. The NIT reduced its field last season from 40.

The CBI intends to compete with the NIT for teams that did not make the NCAA's field of 65, but Virginia said it will give preference to the established tourney.

The Cavaliers (15-15) lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament this week despite the presence of Singletary. The point guard this month became the third Virginia player selected to the All-ACC team three times.
Ralph Sampson and Bryant Stith are the others.

If Virginia winds up in the CBI, it will play a home game Tuesday night.
The fields for all three postseason tournaments will be announced Sunday.

College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Tournament

2008 will mark the inaugural College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Tournament featuring 16 deserving teams who do not get the opportunity to play in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments. As a result of the addition of the CBI Tournament, 113 Division I basketball teams will continue their seasons after the conclusion of conference tournament games. According to the CBI's official Web site, "teams will be invited based upon their performance during their conference and non-conference schedule, as well as how well the team is playing at the end of the regular season." Unique to the new CBI Tournament will be the CBI Championship Series, a three-game series between the final two teams to determine the CBI Championship.
College Sports Fans will provide CBI scores & the CBI schedule after the teams and brackets have been announced, all the way through the CBI Championship Series.

I'm not sure how I feel about the best of 3 championship round. I think I still prefer the intensity of 1 and done for college ball.

I kinda like it this way. It gives you a lot of drama in terms of higher seeds being upset early, but once you make it to the final game, it gives you a better sense of who the best team is. I don't think I'd ever do it for the NCAA tournament, but this is fine for what it is, I think

I like the idea of a best of three. Sure, this tournament borders on irrelevant and I would guess at least half the people who watch the NCAA's have no idea what it is, but it is great that someone stepped up with this experiment to see how the best of three goes.
