Not as good as the 1960 recording in Berlin, but I couldn't find video of that. Still - nothing beats the sound of Ella.

It is so ALL about the hot bass player (the keyboard/singer lady isn't so bad, but man that bass player. Yowza.) Too bad she doesn't get enough face time.

The band is much much more "rock" when you hear them live. The producers screwed the pooch when they quieted down the album versions.

Who'd win in a fight Kim Deal or Corin Tucker?

(I know Bjork would take them both)

Los Angeles
02-23-2008, 05:08 PM
Well, since Bjork's pugilistic style is limited to knitting a sweater with a 9 foot long neck while gnawing on a sprig of parsley and periodically screaming into the abyss in perfect unison to autumn tidal flow of the Icelandic coast, I'll take Kim Deal in a fist fight any day.

Love the Sleater-Kinney clip.

I didn't know that Sleater-Kinney is just the name of an exit on I-5 until I took a trip up to Seattle last summer.

I had the same experience...thought it was somebody Sleater and so-and-so Kinney. Then found myself in a hotel right off the street in Lacey...

Nice Joanna Newsom, Sam.

I was going to link Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan, but the vids I've seen have horrible sound, or just animation for the video.

I had heard a couple of the Sick puppies songs, but didn't know who they were. I like the music, I'll have to download some of their songs.

The other video that ATC posted freaks me the hell out. I'll never be able to take a bath with headphones on again....Oh wait, I've never done that....Oh well, anyways, I hate snakes. They scare me.

i wouldn't go so far as hate. there is other music that makes me more physically ill than they (being forced to listen to "hey there dellilah" would probably send me into a genocidal rage). but i posted that more because of the lovely bassist.

i've heard their "dressed up as life" cd and i'd say they're some type of silverchair meets papa roach combination -- if that means anything.

no problem LA. i gotta say, i love this thread - one of my faves.

you might enjoy this feature that NPR Music does called "Project Song" (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17260110) (i bring this up in here because Georgie James participated.)

basically, an artist or band is sent into NPR's studios for two days. they're given a list of phrases and several images and in the two days they're supposed to craft a song. it is an online video series and there is a companion story for All Songs Considered. the series was just nominated for an emmy. stephin merritt and nellie mckay have also participated.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17260110

Los Angeles

I've heard of that NPR series. I'll check out more of the videos. In a way, I like the idea of the exercise as it gives us wonderful insight into the creative processes of these artists. But on the other hand, it feels just like the silly homework assignments I spent years doing in art school. In many ways these exercises are designed more for the benefit of the viewer/teacher, rather than the artist/student. Creativity-on-demand is a very dangerous prospect, particularly when you're dealing with the self-taught artists that dominate the independent music landscape.

But hey, the Sistine Chapel was created on demand/consignment, so maybe I should get off my high horse on that one. ;)

This is also one of my all-time favorite threads, I just wish it weren't limited to females. The Fleet Foxes, Jose Gonzales, Arcade Fire, Tapes N Tapes, the list goes on. We're in the midst of an underground music renaissance, and I hate to not post great music in here simply due to gender.

This song takes retro-urban-cool to a whole new level ... and the video is beyond awesome, too.

I nominate this thread for best notable victim of the great OT-forum combine debacle thread. It got bumped out of sight and out of mind in a hurry.

EDIT - and i see at least one artist never heard of at time of posting who performed at the grammys last night - Not that the grammys ever mattered.

A little band out of Canada what goes by the name of Metric. Anyone who hasn't listened to Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton should run out to the nearest internet and get some.

For the record, I'd rather be the Beatles.

COBOL SAM!
WELCOME BACK!
DON'T LEAVE!

Is it just me or does the album version of "Gimme Sympathy" sounds a bit Killers-y? I think my favorites from Fantasies are "Sick Muse" and "Collect Call" -- both of which I've been compulsively listening to the last week or so. I'll be checking out Metric and another Sam's Ladies of Music fave Camera Obscura when they hit the 930 Club in June.

Speaking of Camera, I present "French Navy"...

It was new Metric music. I think that's worthy of another post.

Also, I'm a day late for LA's birthday so I'll include two...

Jolie Holland featured in some hip hop video. I cannot make my mind up about this. However, I often do fantasize about Jolie and I pillow talking about Bukowski. Am I alone in this regard?

Mates of State "My Only Offer" I liked that song ATC!

Here's another one:

Esmee Denters "Get Me Outta Here". Bit of teenagersong, but I dunno, I sort of like it, besides she is HOT :).

NPR webcasted the Metric show I went to last week @ the 930 Club in DC. The show can be streamed or downloaded here (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=105478436). "Dead Disco" is amazing live.

I had heard of but not heard anything from Anni Rossi until she opened for Camera Obscura last night. While I find her voice a tad whiny, I think I'm leaning towards digging it. Haven't quite made up my mind... anyway, for your consideration I present Anni Rossi.

So you went to Camera Obscura without even a mention of an invite to your good pal Sam?

I'm loving this Anni Rossi, otherwise you'd be on the list Sir.
