The Pacers give up more free throws than any other team in the league at 31.7 per game. The league average for free throw shooting is 75%. This calculates out to around 24 points per game that we give up on free throws.

The league average for opponent's free throws is 25.34. If you round this down to 25, that means that the average team is giving up around 19 points per game on free throws. That gives us a 6 point difference.

How does this really affect us? Let's look at the schedule.

Our current record is 16-19. If we had allowed our opponents to only make the league average for free throws in a game, we'd be 18-17.

I know there are a ton of other factors involved, but I thought this would be interesting to look at. I'll try to update it for each game.

Thanks, Mel. There's four possiblities here.

1. We won, but would have won anyway.
2. We won, but would have lost.
3. We lost, but would have won.
4. We lost, but would have lost anyway.

Can you discuss it that way? For example, in the first game the Pacers would still win even if 10 points were taken back from the Wizards.

FreeThrows disadvantages i think are caused of us not having a player that drives the ball.

and i think we win even if 10pts are taken from the FT is because we are uptempo, and we shoot a lot of threes and when they fall, the despairity from the ft is negated. but combine them both. then we should have been wining by 15+ game. haha

yah.. we aint elite. so yah

Spurs can do that
Celts can do that
Pistons can do that

but i think this upcoming Jazz game, we should see more FT's.. Utah fouls a lot but only if we drive. they aint gonna foul people shootin threes.

Not to mention the impact that foul trouble has on the course of a game. We just don't have any slashers on this team other than a healthy Marquis, and when you combine that with a post player who doesn't draw a lot of fouls, it's hard to count on fouls in any way, shape, or form.

I think that's a major difference between JOB's Celtics/Sixers and JOB's Pacers. On those other teams, he had a dynamic scorer who drew lots of foul shots, which consequently, allowed his bigs to rest at the stripe so that they could keep running.
