If there is a thread on this already just delete this,

There are some good Basketball minds here, so lets here your ideas. Watching sportscenter just now and watching Reggie go man2man D with Rip aint gonna work...

I think they need to go Zone when Rip's in the game. Can the pacers play a good enough Zone to make it effective? I have always thought that the zone limits Reggie/Rips type of game dramatically, cause ya know you dont have one guy chasing them through 3 screens.

Freddie or Ron...that's how you contain him.

Rip will slash right through a zone. He is quick and he can get quick shots off if need be. All you need is a good slasher and a good passer to defeat the zone. You just have to find the hole in the defense and eat it up.

Use Scot Pollard in the game, and ask him to take a vicious hit on Rip. Let him get knocked out for a week.

Pollard will be Indiana's hero. ;)

Really? I thought the coaches tried that already and it didn't work.

but even with Freddie or Ron guarding him on Man2Man D you are still gonna have the same problems.

3 screens and .4 seconds and rips got the ball up already.

BUMP HIM, BUMP HIM and BUMP HIM AGAIN. USE YOUR FOULS!!

The Lakers did this to Tony Parker and put him WAY OFF his game.

AND BUMP HIM AGAIN! AND MAKE HIM WORK HIS *** OFF WHEN HE's defending. HE's skinny and we should take hit right at him.

Well, that's when we have our big guys make him not wanna do that with a few friendly fouls. No one drives to the hoop this game is what I'd be preaching. Knock em on their *** if they try.

Two bad things about going zone, in my opinion. One, a team that moves the ball well and penitrate will beat it. Detroit can do both of these very well. Not to mention they have 4 guys on the floor that can hit a jump shot consoistantly. THe second negative comes in reguards to rebounding. Detroit would get even more offensive boards if they get to roam free underneath. We can't get them blocked out half the time when we are matched up. Just my opinion.

Worked a LOT better with Ron on him rather than Reggie.

I know I haven't watched every minute of each game, but from what I saw, I thought Reggie did the best on him out of those three players.

His ball kicking technique is remarkable. Look at his eyes...think about balls first, then shot.

Maybe we could get Bruce Bowen and have him do that flying kick he did against a player. Or maybe just put his foot under jumpshooters feet.. ;)

Wouldn't Ron getting in foul trouble be a problem if he covered Rip the entire game?

Pull his shorts down.

Then snap back his mask, breaking his nose again.

It's sad that the only way to stop the guy is with a hard foul, and that might just make him mad and more focused... ala reggie.
I still think zone is the best way to contain him and then hammer him hard when he tries to split the D.

Game 5 about halfway through the 3rd Rip had more than half their points... that's sick. Somethings gotta give

Maybe AJ could give him the flu?

Ron, fulltime on Rip is an idea... but who guards Prince? He's capable of scoring twenty-plus against the Uncle, too. :(

I'm scared to play him right now, but it could work. Depends on how agressive he is. Passive Jon = Disaster. Agressive Jon - heck he'd probably get hurt but at this stage of the season, who cares?

:D

lemme see, we cam into this series with no player hurting if i remember well.

Now: JO (undercut, hyper-extended knee)
Jamal: undercut, twisted ankle, knee, thrown around: torn amstring
Al: sternum (wee elbow)

and some of you are worried about a hard foul or two?

if they want war, give it to them, go hard and go hard again, stop whoever tries to penetrate, use Polly if need be, use whoever.

No one mentioned that Rip had 3 fouls 40 seconds into the 2nd half, yet he did not get antoher, bring it to him

and msa2cf: you have not seen one game by the sound of it: Ron shut him down once he (fnially) got him in the 3d.

 Thanks, able. I did say previously that I haven't watched every minute, so maybe Ron did stop Rip. I have watched a lot of this series and, from what I saw, Ron did nothing to change how Rip was doing.

Ron took him midway through the 3d, he had 27 pts, Ron left him in the 4th with 30, he made one 3 in 14 minutes or so.

Artest has gaurded him some in the series and gotten a few blocking calls for doing it. It will be interesting to see if Ron can chase hime for a whole game.

Beyond using Ron on him (which I agree with) you need to stress contact, contact, contact. Bump and ride him (no, not THAT bump and ride) the entire game.

He'll still get some points but you should be able to wear him down.

Hey, it would definitely take him out of his game. :o

C'mon, Ron! Take one for the team! :puke:

Bender?

I had a thread on this before game 4 and I watched carefully when Bender was in the game. He guarded Rip better than Reggie and Fred combined.

Reggie and Fred cannot contain Rip. They can't stay with him through the picks. Bender with his skinny frame and long reach did a much better job of staying with him. Unfortunately, he turned the ball over twice in the middle of the Pacers run in the second quarter and rode the pine the rest of the way.

Anyway, 5.1 is the best defensively against Rip because of his speed, length, and shot-blocking ability.

Hey - it's worth a try isn't it? For longer than a few minutes...I say RC should let it pan out and see what happens.

A few minutes is right.

By now, Rick should have figured out what does and does not work.

Don't think I agree. We've only had a severely hobbled PG and wounded C for a game or two. All bets on our gameplan are off.
