this is from RealGM's Wiretap so take it with a grain of salt until there is other confirmation. but i'm guessing it is true.

The Indiana Pacers (http://pacers.realgm.com/) announced on Tuesday that they have waived center Courtney Sims (http://www.realgm.com/src_playerfile/1383/courtney_sims/).

The rookie out of Michigan played in just two games for the Pacers (http://pacers.realgm.com/) this season, averaging just 4.5 minutes per game.

Yeah, I'd call it true.

So we have 13 players under contract. Interesting.

Maybe Ike is getting close to returning. Or could they be considering signing John Lucas III?

He'll probably head down to the NBDL which will give him some good experience.

Interesting indeed. I can't recall the last time the Pacers had less than 15 players on their roster during the season.

So, are the Pacers just cutting a player they'll never use and be satisfied with 13 players? Are we going to sign someone else?

Or are the Pacers making room for a trade that will bring back more players then they send out? Hmm.... (probably not, but it's fun to think about)

EDIT: Whoops, I guess we still have 14 players. Forgot about Graham.

I thought the whole point of signing him was that he would play for the Ants.

I think its probably more about Ike than anything else. Maybe were trading for Pau Gasol...

I would be this is nothing more than a contract thing. Dec. 4th was probably a deadline to pay him more money.

NBA contracts don't become guaranteed until January 10th. It's mildly interesting why he would be cut so out of the blue. Perhaps they realized they had no interest/need for him and decided to cut him early in order to give him a better shot at finding another team? They waited until January 5th to cut Samaki Walker last season. Perhaps they needed to free up a roster spot for an upcoming trade or free agent signing? It's certainly something to at least think about, and with our guard situation, something management has to be looking at.

It's hard for me to buy the "clear room for somebody else" argument, since we could easily have waited until signing or trading before cutting Sims.

Players frequently get cut after a 2-for-1 trade. To cut him before makes me think that it was purely an issue with him. Either the Pacers decided that he wasn't no longer worth investing in on the basketball side, or they didn't like his off-court interactions. I find the first more likely.

I agree.

I thought that they were going to have him in the D League all year but I guess they feel he is not worth investing in.

They had cut him already then signed him when Jermaine was injured. It could be that since Jermaine is back (and they did not use him anyway) they just decided to cut him.

It's on Pacers.com too.

*The Pacers only carried 14 in '05-'06 after cutting Walker a little into the season.
*I don't think Lari Ketner stayed with the team for the full season in '00-'01 which would be the same situation.

*In the '01-'02 season, the Pacers started with 14 including "Los" Rogers I can't remember if he was retained up to the trade with Chicago or not. That was a 3 for 4 player deal putting them at 15 if Rogers did indeed stay all season. I think he was cut since Rose lobbied for him after Rose left which would mean 14 after the trade too.
*In the '02-'03 season Tim Hardaway was signed mid-season meaning the Pacers carried only 14 up to that point.
*'03-'04 the Pacers retained Brewer, Brezec & James Jones probably because Bender and Jamaal missed significant amounts of time and they were youngsters with potential. None of them really played and they were all cheap.
*'04-'05 The brawl year is too hard to decipher. I can't remember if Edwards was with the team from the beginning or not.

The Pacers haven't always carried 15. Sometime they do when they have to or if it's reasonably cheap.

He was an All-Star :)

I'm also suprised that he was not sent on to Fort Wayne as an assigned player. Maybe the Pacers didn't think he was worth tying up a roster spot because they didn't see enough potential in his game.

he was soft. No need for a soft front court player.

this is the probable explanation.

i'd expect sims to head down to the mad ants anyway. the only difference now is that the pacers won't be paying his salary.

I don't "hate" either player... that's way too strong.

But if I were a GM, I'd pay them about the same amount.
