The majority of the East has also had rocky starts. Other than Orlando and Boston no team has looked very good in the East. The Pacers lost 6 games in a row and they are still tied for 8th with New Jersey. Compared to the expectations and performance of Chicago, New Jersey, Miami, and Detroit coming into the season the Pacers are in relatively decent shape.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division W L

Boston 8 1
Toronto 5 5
New Jersey 4 6
Philadelphia 3 6
New York 2 7

Central Division W L

Detroit 6 4
Cleveland 5 5
Milwaukee 4 4
Indiana 4 6
Chicago 2 7

Southeast Division W L

Orlando 9 2
Charlotte 5 4
Washington 4 5
Atlanta 3 6
Miami 2 8

They've played 10 games and if they can weather the storm of the next 10 games and manage a 6-4 or 5-5 record , they'll be in good shape. That would leave them at 10-10 or 9-11 with a December schedule that is a lot kinder. That would be about what I'd expect with the change in coach, style, and player rotations the Pacers have had.

Here's the upcoming 10 games that round out the first 20 games and my predictions (most agree that it takes at least 20 games before you know what to expect from a team):

Tue 20 vs LA Lakers W
Wed 21 @ New Orleans L
Fri 23 vs Dallas L
Sun 25 vs Cleveland W
Tue 27 @ Denver L
Wed 28 @ Portland W
Fri 30 @ Seattle W

December
Sun 02 @ LA Clippers W
Tue 04 vs Phoenix L
Fri 07 @ Orlando L

That may be a little optomistic but I think they'll go 5-5 during this stretch which would give them an 9-11 record overall. Post your prediction and let's see off or on we are come December 8th.

They're actually tied for 9th, but good point

New Jersey got blown out tonight so that's no longer the case :)

New Jersey is falling apart at the seams. Jason Kidd is unhappy and Vince is injured.

Miami is a mess and Shaq is deteriorating right before our eyes.

I'm not sure that Charlotte or Washington is really that much better than the Pacers. The East is pretty well balanced this year and the slow start (if things level out as I expect) won't really hurt them too much in the long run.

I think the magic will take out Boston in the playoffs and we can beat the magic...EASTERN FINALS HERE WE COME!

The Pacers are still in pretty good shape. 6-8 through the first 14 games of the season and 2-2 so far during this tough 10 game stretch.

I know some of you guys have been ready to jump out of a window after that loss to the Cavs yesterday but really they have played much better basketball in their last 3 games. Defensively they're getting after the ball and they are doing a better job of running up the court. There's still some weaknesses but they're about where I expected them to be at this point in the season.

I have to agree that the Pacers have looked pretty good and even though they are right under 500, they have been through a pretty brutal schedule the past few weeks and have been competitive in most games.

The Pacers are 10-10 and went 6-4 during this tough stretch.

I'm feeling very good about this team's chances to compete this year and they actually have a realistic shot at finishing as number 4 or 5 in the East if they continue to build on their progress.

They had the lead late in the 4th quarters of the games against Cleveland and Phoenix so the record could've been better but I'm definitely encouraged with their play.

Ten games and you only picked three right?

You did GREAT!

I say that in all sincerity because that's how many I got right. The Pacers were zigging when we had them zagging! (grin)

Believe me, I don't mind being wrong!
