Fever Declines Option On Winters Contract

News Release | October 26, 2007

<HR>
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever has declined its option on the contract of Head Coach Brian Winters, as announced by Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf.

The decision closes a four-year era in which Winters guided the Fever to a 78-58 regular season record. Indiana advanced to the WNBA Playoffs in three consecutive seasons under the former NBA coach, including trips to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2005 and 2007. The third coach in Fever history, Winters was 5-7 in 12 playoff games with the Fever.

“After much discussion this postseason, we came to the conclusion that a new voice is needed to take over the direction of the team,” said Krauskopf. “Brian has been a good coach for our franchise, and a quality individual. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Indiana finished its 2007 regular season with a 21-13 record for the third straight season before advancing to the WNBA Playoffs. For 2008 season ticket information, visit FeverBasketball.com or call (317) 917-2500. :eyebrow2:

It's not like I'm mad about it, but I don't agree with this decision. Anyone can tell you Tamika's injuries are to blame for last year. I'm thinking Kelly feels we didn't live up to our talent level while Catchings was out, but I don't necessarily agree with that.

The Star posits Lin Dunn as a possible replacement. As someone who had a front row seat for the much ballyhooed end of her tenure at Purdue, let's just say she would not be my first choice.

Any chance Carolyn Peck would decide to give coaching another go? :pray:

I'm kinda surprised by this. I wonder who they have in mind as a replacement.

Hey, isn't that Carlisle guy still looking for a team to coach...? :devil:

I would have fired him year before last but this past season was out of his hands.

I'd rather have Tamika be a player/coach. Heck, I'd rather have Freddie Fever coach.

Was there more to B. Winters getting let go then what we know with wins and losses? I thought it was kinda odd that they let him go considering the coach of this team before him was a joke with a really nasty punch line. Maybe they are going to let someone within PS&E cut their teeth on a coaching job ala Laimbeer in Detroit.

I liked Brian but he wasn't championship caliber coach. He was carried by this team and it's talent for to long.

Anyone else heard that Dennis Rodman is interested in coaching us?

I heard he's interested in coaching in the WNBA. I don't think he ever said he wanted to coach here. The Fever are just about the last team I think would be desperate enough to hire him. I'd rather have Nell Fortner back. (I was no fan of hers at the end.)
