NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Hornets activated Jamal Mashburn on Tuesday, meaning the star small forward is expected to play his first game of the season Wednesday night against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks.

Mashburn, an Eastern Conference All-Star last season, has been out since he banged his right knee early in training camp, leading to arthroscopic surgery to remove loose particles. He has missed all eight preseason and 44 regular season games.

Mashburn led the Hornets in scoring last season with 21.6 points per game. He was also one of only five players in the NBA to average at least 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. The others were Kobe Bryant, Steve Francis, Kevin Garnett and Chris Webber.

To make room on the roster, reserve guard Bryce Drew was placed on the injured list.

It was not clear whether guard Baron Davis, who has been out since spraining his ankle Jan. 19 in a game at Minnesota, will play. He was listed as possible by team officials.

Forward P.J. Brown, who twisted his right ankle in Saturday night's victory at San Antonio, is probable, team spokesman Harold Kaufman said.

Now we're really gonna find out if Floyd can coach. A number of people have questioned how well he'll fit into the new offense where Davis is the focal point.
