I'm a bit uneasy about the last two hires (Kirk and McCoy), plus the rumored storyline as well. Paramount is supposedly throwing a ton of money at this, so we'll see.

I guess I shouldn't complain. It'd take an act of god to make it worse than the last couple movies. :puke:

apparently matt damon was interested in playing kirk but jj told him that he was too old.

Also, I forgot. There's one more (rumored) major part left to be cast, Christopher Pike. I think it's an easy choice:

I'm uneasy about the casting of McCoy. I have no qualms about any of the others.

Without giving too much away, let's just say he'd be way to old for the part.

are you kidding with this cast? really?

when is the new movie due out? My dad is a big star trek fan (I am too, but mostly Next Generation) so I'll have to see it with him.

Why don't they do movies with the other casts from other shows instead of going back to the original crew? I take it this is going to be a prequel like Star Wars did then?

40 million salary difference?

40 million salary difference?

in theory but it wasn't jj going after matt... matt was going after jj. so matt could very well have taken a SAG minimum to appear. stars negotiate down their fees if they want to be in a project (see the ocean films as an example).

Area 51? Kirk's not only a dick, but given a starship to command right out of the academy?!?! :puke:

That already is in the Star Trek canon not something the director added.

Now granted I'm much, much more up to snuff with Trek canon on TNG, DS9, and VOY than I am on TOS, but are you kidding me? Was TOS that screwy (relative to what I know from those 3 shows) to have an ensign command a ship, or rather I'm guessing to assign a fresh-out-of-the-academy-kid his own captain's chair? That's.... wow.

And are you also saying that it's TOS canon that the Enterprise was built at Area 51? I've never heard that.

IIRC, Kirk was the youngest starship captain at 35.

{runs off to google}

Nope, 34.

James T. Kirk
Played by William Shatner
Episode: TOS 002 - Where No Man Has Gone Before

Starfleet Career Summary

2250 — As a first-year Academy student with ensign rank, assigned to U.S.S. Republic NCC-1371

2254 — Upon graduation, promoted to lieutenant and posted to U.S.S. Farragut under Capt. Garrovick

2264 — Promoted to captain, in command of U.S.S. Enterprise for five-year mission

That's what I'm getting at. He graduates and is handed the Enterprise in this new version, whereas in TOS (at least a little more realistically) it was a decade before he got that command.

And again, what's with this Area51 crap? Is that seriously the original story and I just didn't know it?

Wait, thanks to startrek.com's database I answered my own question:

http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/library/ships/article/70377.html

Launched in 2245, the original and illustrious starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was built in the San Francisco Yards orbiting Earth.

See? This Area51 nonsense is crap.

After reading some of this, I'm not sure how good the movie will be for Star Trek Fans that actually know the back stories on these characters.
The only thing worse than the Area 51 idea is that time travel seems to be involved. There is more than enough dead space available in the time line to fill without resprting to that lame tool.

Does anybody remember a few years back when J.J. wrote a script for the Superman relaunch? The details that leaked out made it sound abysmal, and Warner Bros. didn't go with it.

I was talking about the cheating part. I'm only a trekie through my Mom's watching the show.

I'm not a big fan of Abrams. I think Jennifer Gardner's hot and that is about it for my apperciation of his convoluted works.

These story spoilers aren't even confirmed. They're just rumors. I doubt they'd be that stupid to change those things.

FYI, the AICN story has been vehemently denied by one of J.J.'s writers.

The film's release date has been pushed back. :(

http://www.trektoday.com/news/140208_01.shtml

Star Trek XI will be released on May 8, 2009, depriving Star Trek fans of a Christmas Day movie present. As reported at Variety (http://www.variety.com/), the new Star Trek movie has been delayed by Paramount, who believes that a greater gross potential would be realized in the summer.

The move was part of a major reshuffling to the studio's release calendar as they try to balance out their 2008 and 2009 calendars now that the writer's strike has ended.

Thus far, Star Trek XI has no competition in its new release slot, although it is now due to open one week after 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and one week before Sony's Angels and Demons.

Other Paramount movies have been moved, including: Nowhereland with Eddie Murphy which is moving from September 26 2008, to June 12, 2009; The Renee Zellweger horror-thriller Case 39, which is moving from August 22, 2008 to April 10, 2009; and David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which stars Brad Pitt and is moving from November 26, 2008 to December 19, 2008.
