As of now, the only way to have an avatar is to upload it here, off-site avatars no longer work. The size limit for avatars is about 49kb, the height limit is 200 and the width limit is 175.

So what you now do is find the pic you want, and if don't already have it saved on your computer, do so, and then upload it.

Now, when I tested it, the height/width limit didn't seem to get enforced. If it never does, it's up to all of you to edit your pics before you upload them to make sure they're no bigger than 200x175.

On that note, I now ask that one of you who is good with a variety of graphics programs tell people who may not know much about it the easiest way to resize images (and with programs that everyone's likely to have or get easily).

The good thing about uploading besides making it more uniform with size and dimension limits (which will make things load a lot faster for everyone, especially those with slow connections) is that it's really easy to get the avatar you want; because now the site hosts it for you instead of you hoping your source holds up or that you can find a site to host it. We take care of that now. :) So just help us out in maintaining that no avatar is larger than 49Kb, nor larger than 200x175, and this should go really, really well.

Also, it's time to talk signatures. As of now we're asking you keep the same limits in your signature as your avatar: No more than one picture (which still can be linked off site, unlike avatars), and please don't put anything in there bigger than 50kb and try to keep it no bigger than 200 in height, but it can be wider than an avatar. I haven't done any measurements or anything, but I think up to 550 wide wouldn't hurt anything.

Thanks in advance. :)

P.S., obviously this means animated .gif s are out the window; I've seen some now that are 1.4MB and that's just way too big; and really no animated file is smaller than 200kb 99.9% of the time. So if something like that is in your signature, please remove it. Thank you. :)

I like these new rules. Keeps everything neat and well under control, without restricting people much at all.

As for re-sizing pictures, there are several programs you can use. I'll list the ones I have and know how to use, and anyone else who knows others can do the same.

Adobe Photoshop: Click on "Image" on the top toolbar, then click "Image Size." A box will pop up with width and height controls, and an option to constrain proportions, meaning it changes both at once so you don't end up with a really skinny or fat picture.

MGI Photosuite: Click on "Image" on the top toolbar, then click "Resize." A box will pop up, with width and height controls, but no constrain proportions option. If you don't want an ill-proportioned picture, you'll have to some math. That's why I use Photoshop. :D

MS Paint: Yes, MS Paint. :D Click on "Image" on the top toolbar, then click "Stretch and Skew." A box will pop up with horizontal and vertical %s, but no pixel measures. May take a couple tries to get it just right, but it does work.

.... I'll add more if need be.

Suh-weeeeet. Thanks, Hicks. My computer and I both thank you (and able).

It seems the height and width limit isn't being enforced, so please resize it yourself if it needs to be, before uploading. If you have more questions on how to resize images, I'm sure Snickers or somoene else will help you if you ask.

It's enforcing it on me.

I have no problem losing the Elmer Fudd <snif> But in reality I have never had any problem loading and I'm using a 56K dial-up connection.

I have a photo saved to my computer I'd like to use but have ZERO idea how. So I'll wait until someday when things get easier.

geez, Elmer is not lost! If you haven't already, make sure you have him saved on your computer. When you do, come back here and click on "Profile" (It's on the top right of the page).

In your profile, scroll down to where it talks about Avatars, and you'll see a button that says "Browse". Click it, hunt down where you saved your elmer fudd pic (or if you want something else, whereever that picture is saved on your computer). Once you've found the file you want, click it, then click where it says "Open". Then click "Submit".

It doesn't seem to like my file type - the extension is jpg and the file type in MS Picture is jpeg, but the Avatar upload fails and tells me the file type is wrong.

So, I tried to copy my avatar from my image hosting location, and I get this error (I think because it may be 180 pixels wide):

Could not write avatar file to local storage. Please contact the board administrator with this message

It works if I save it as a gif, though. Interesting.

I had the exact same issue as BillS. It wouldn't accept a .jpg or .png, and I also received the same error message when trying to load my avatar from another url. Only .gif worked.

I'll also volunteer to help anyone out who needs assistance.

Wierd; mine is a .jpg and it took it. :whoknows:

Hicks

Oh, and if anyone was confused on the size of the avatar thing, mine is exactly as wide as the limit (175), and obnoxiousmodesty's is just a little bit shorter than the height limit (200) at 197.

Only if it's smaller than 50kb (which is doubtful, sorry)

I was talking with Kstat, and he's having trouble uploading. He tried it as a .jpg, and as a .gif, and both times got the message that "must be .jpg, .gif, or. png".

I have no idea why.

able, is there something that can be done about this?

Only thing left to try to get that problem going away is an update to the latest version of the bb software.

As for the error msg:

I got that to, and I couldn't be arsed to make a gif of it, so instead of using my mozilla I tried it using IE, lo and behold: no problems whatsoever.

I think therefore it has to do with how mozilla handles the "post" different.

so either change it into a gif, or try using IE for just once to upload :)

I had exactly the same trouble so I changed my .jpg to a .jpeg and it worked. I have no idea why, I thought they were the same.

Well, hack my leg off and call me "stumpy." That works (using IE).

OK, what is it with this software and Netscape/Mozilla? Is it stuck in "IE is God" mode?

I know this is extremely extra, but I avoid Micro$oft whenever possible, so an investigation of how to clean up the operation with Netscape would be appreciated, if certainly not a priority.

See; I don't know what Kstat uses, but I tried to do it for him after it wouldn't work, and I use IE, and it still didn't work.

I didn't try that .jpeg trick though... Kstat, you listening? That's just renaming it literally from whatever.jpg to whatever.jpeg

Who knows; it might work.

Netscape has a reputation for being slow to pick up on HTML/Java and image encryption updates, so IE tends to be more compatible with newer features.
