fan2 (fn) n. Informal. An ardent devotee; an enthusiast. [Short for fanatic.]

Hicks, (a.k.a. Mal) got me to thinking about what it takes to satisfy or make a fan of a particular team happy. He said in response to shade; http://www.pacersdigest.com/apache2-default/showthread.php?t=32664 post#33;

"People need to stop with this "it's only a good year if we're in the Finals and after that only if we win it all". That's ridiculous expectations to have. Root for the team to constantly improve, yes, but beyond that you're setting yourself up. It's just reality. Enjoy what there actually is to enjoy, and stop setting yourself up for disappointment.

If we're entertaining and we're winning more than we're losing, I'm basically happy as long as I feel we're improving. As has been argued on here many times, it's better to be .500 and build on it than it is to be in the basement and hope to get very lucky with the lottery."

I thought a questionnaire in order.

[1] What team are you a fan of?

Pace Cars

[2] Why did you become a fan of said team?

Reggie

[3] How many championships has your team won while you were a fan?

0

[4] There are now 30 NBA teams. Do you expect more than one championship every 30 years?

Yes

[5] What kind of fan do you consider yourself?

Hardcore.

[6] What does it take for your team to satisfy you?

a) A championship.

Eventually...but not on an every year basis

b) To be a contender all the time.

Patently ridiculous

c) To be a contender most of the time.

Being a true title contender is probably a stretch for any NBA team over the long haul. Not even the Cs, Lakers, Bulls or Spurs have only been much over 50% since 1985.

But I'm choosing this one saying we should be a legit ECF contender more often than not and we should definitely be at least relevent to the ECF discussion most of the time.

d) To be a contender once in a while.

For a ring, this is where I stand.

e) To be entertained.

Obviously.

f) To be better than average.

Yes

g) To keep improving.

Not sure this is possible.

h) The players have to be likable.

Ideally, but I'll root for Charles Manson if he's out there dropping triple doubles.

I) The team has to have a star player.

Not sure we ever really have, so no.

j) The team has to have my favorite player on it.

Nope, Reggie retired and DWade is in Miami.

k) Other.

None of these expectations matter. I'm a Pacers fan. I chose them when I was like 12. And in my world, you're not allowed to change teams once you become an adult. I picked the Pacers and since I'll always love basketball, I'll always be a Pacers fan. Even if we :gulp: turn into the Clippers.

[1] What team are you a fan of?
Pacers

[2] Why did you become a fan of said team?
Reggie

[3] How many championships has your team won while you were a fan?
0

[4] There are now 30 NBA teams. Do you expect more than one championship every 30 years?
No. I only expect one, but the more the better.

[5] What kind of fan do you consider yourself?
Fairly casual compared to the maniacs on this board. Just kidding. I am addicted just like you (ie. hardcore)

[6] What does it take for your team to satisfy you?

Of the options, probably to keep improving. That's one of the reasons I liked the 90's. Basically, I am happy if the team is a threat. In fact, I like that better than being dominant. I liked it most when Reggie would scare the bajeezez out of the competition with a last second three. There was never anything better than him sticking the dagger into the Evil Knicks.

j) The team has to have my favorite player on it.
k) Other. - The style of game they play/display on court.

I have extremely high standards for the Pacers, and expect the best out of them. That doesn't mean next season I'll be expecting a title of course, but as long as we continue to improve towards one I will be happy.

Of course, I'm with FlavaDave, I will support the Pacers no matter what happens. I will still watch every game and go to 20+ a year. I have the Pacers logo tattooed on my arm, there isn't much I can do about that. :)

Pacers

[2] Why did you become a fan of said team?
First interest in NBA arount 1997
I live in the UK, but i dont like supporting the big, glory teams, e.g Lakers, so i wanted to support a small market team, who was almost an underdog. I saw Reggie play a few times and really became a Reggie fan. Then the more i learnt about the Pacers the more they seemed to fit into the kind or team i like to support, and through their success my affiliation with the team got stronger, it wasnt until about 2003 that i really got fully into basketball, mainly due to my age. Having created this connection, i then became more of a hardcore fan and have never turned back.

[2] Why did you become a fan of said team?
Home town team when. Fan since about 78-79 when I learned about the NBA at a more serious level.

[3] How many championships has your team won while you were a fan?
None.

[6] What does it take for your team to satisfy you?

c) To be a contender most of the time.
If this means a playoff caliber team, perhaps a top 6 seed 3 out of 5 years.

Also I expect the team to play smart, quality ball whether they win or lose. I don't care for wins that are total slop and I don't hate losses in which they played a high caliber game.

QUESTIONNAIRE

[1] What team are you a fan of?

Indiana Pacers

[2] Why did you become a fan of said team?

I'd have to say a) proximaty first; as a child was a Bulls fan because I grew up in Northern Indiana. Never knew IN had their own NBA team until I moved to Naptown as an adult. Quickly switched allegences; and, b) the thrill of the underdog the Pacers seemed to always be, but never giving up, always scrapy. The 90's "Pacers/Knicks" rivalry and Reggie -vs- Jordon...loved that era of classic Pacers basketball...became a PFFL after that.

[3] How many championships has your team won while you were a fan?

Unfortunately, none, but we're working on it. :)

[4] There are now 30 NBA teams. Do you expect more than one championship every 30 years?

Yes. A dynasty thrown in every now and then ain't bad either. Having the same team kick butt all the time is no fun especially for 30 yrs! Of course, those two 3-peats by the Bulls were awesome! Could have lived with them winning another ring or two during that championship era.

d) Other.

h) The players have to be likable. (1)
I) The team has to have a star player.
j) The team has to have my favorite player on it.
k) Other. Team should be competitive or atleast play with a competitive spirit every game no matter the outcome or overall record. (2)

Note: Numbers rank my preferences in order of importance.

Other: To be well-coached, play with full effort and teamwork, and to make progress toward a championship. My grading scale is tough (championship = A, lose in Game #7 of The Finals = A-, lose in game #6 B+, etc., but *that's* my team. I don't stop cheering for them. The reason I get mad at them is because I want them to be the best.

I) The team has to have a star player.

k) Other.
1. Indiana Pacers, and that is the only Pro-basketball team that I will root for.

2. I remember first watching the game where Reggie blew up for 25pts in the 4th quarter vs the Knicks. Then next game I remember was the 8 pts in just a few seconds(yeah I know that it was not the same series, nor same year). I was maybe 10 years old or so, and I remember my father dogging the Pacers, b/c they had been so terrible up till those years. After that, I followed them closely nearly every year.

3. I will say one, but that was only an EC championship. No NBA titles yet:cry:

4. That would make sence, but no. Some teams are destined to be near the bottom of the league for ever, and some are destined to be a contending/competitive team for ever. I do expect the Pacers, however to win championships more frequently than they have.

5. Hardcore. The only season that I have not followed since becoming a fan was 2002-2003. I was at Basic Combat Training, and phase I of my AIT, so I did not get to watch anygames until later in the season.

6. What does it take for my team to satisfy me??
A. To compete at all times. I dont think that it is possible to contend year in and year out, there will always be down years, but to remain competitive is the key for me.
B. To be entertained.
C. To show improvement.
D. To have your players be suitable role models. I dont think that it is correct to say "likable players." If they are on the Pacers, then I will like them b/c of that, but it is more important for that player to be a good citizen, and keep out of trouble. That is an issue that the Pacers have been seemingly unable to aviod in the recent past.
