The Indiana Pacers interviewed assistant coach Johnny Davis and Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw for their vacant head coaching position Tuesday.

In another development, the Pacers gave Sacramento permission to talk to assistant coach Chuck Person about the Kings' head coaching vacancy.

Person also met with Pacers officials Friday about the Indiana job.

Davis was pleased with his interview with the Pacers.

"I thought it was a productive meeting," Davis said of his talk with team president Larry Bird. "It's a first-class organization; I'd be proud and honored to be their head coach."

Shaw, a former teammate of Bird in Boston, has been an assistant with the Lakers since the middle of the 2004-05 season.Davis, who has been in the NBA as a player, coach or front office official for 31 years, was head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.

"Oftentimes, there is more to it than the won-loss record," Davis said.

"There's circumstances that don't allow you to be successful, especially if you don't get the time to implement the things necessary to be successful.

Success takes time; it doesn't happen overnight."

Besides interviewing Person, Davis and Shaw, the Pacers have also talked to former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy.

The Pacers have yet to ask Toronto for permission to speak to coach Sam Mitchell. Raptors president Bryan Colangelo is not allowing teams to talk to Mitchell, who is under contract until June 30.

Is this for Ron?

If it means Person won't coach us, have at it.

The only reason would be for Ron.

Chuck was probably the one guy Ron seemed to connect to.

In a way, I'd rather Chuck do that first and come back to the Pacers later, with more experience.

Yeah...no kidding......

Another effort to accomodate Ron  When does it end?

In my head, I keep coming back to the Rifleman's depostion.

When the security guard tried to stop him, he flashed his credentials and said, "I'm going to get my player."

Then he calmly got Ron out of that mess while they were pelted with beer and god-knows-what else.

Of course, it pissed me off when the young, dumb ESPN commentator referred to Chuck as "the big bodyguard" as they showed them leaving the court together.

This actually is a smart move by the Kings. Not that Chuck can handle Ron permanently - because nobody can - but it will buy the Kings some time to try to salvage what little bit of trade value Ron might have.

:evillaugh

I have no idea why Chuck would do it, though. Talk about a death sentence.

When Chuck played for the Pacers we would see him at Bally's at Keystone and he would say the dumbest things. I had no doubt that he was the dumbest guy in the building every time he showed up. I am surprised he could be considered for a head coaching job.

I cannot even fathom Chuck being a head coach.

If Sac wants a coach to handle Ron then they should be talking with Mel Daniels. Boston game...in the hallway leading to the lockeroom....remember?

Oh, I'd like to see Musselman here to replace him as the defensive coach...

I thought they were going to try and trade Ron for 5 cents on the dollar.

That could still take them half a season.
