MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis rookie Rudy Gay scored 21 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter Saturday night, to lead the Grizzlies to a 101-89 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit had taken a 78-77 lead with 8:34 left, but Memphis put together a 20-6 run to go up 97-84 with 2:33 left. Gay scored nine in that stretch.

Dahntay Jones added 17 for Memphis, going 6-of-8 from the floor, while Hakim Warrick scored 13 and had eight rebounds.

For the second straight game, Lawrence Roberts had double-digit rebounds with 10 in 15 minutes. Gay, the rookie out of Connecticut, has led Memphis in scoring in all three exhibition games.

Five Pistons scored in double figures, led by 16 from Jason Maxiell. Flip Murray added 14 and Carlos Delfino had 13. Chauncey Billups was the only Detroit starter in double figures with 10 points, matching the total by Amir Johnson.

The Grizzlies were without starters Mike Miller, who had the nail on his right big toe removed, and center Jake Tsakalidis, who has a sore right knee. Since the Grizzlies cut Kimani Ffriend on Friday, that left 6-foot-8 Brian Cardinal, normally a forward, starting at center.

On the Detroit side, Nazr Mohammed didn't play, so Antonio McDyess was in the middle with Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace at the forwards. Detroit officials classified Mohammed's night off only as a coach's decision before the game.

The Pistons starters were in for most of the third period, but Memphis held a 75-70 lead entering the final period when Jones hit another basket at the end of the quarter"

2. I might also add that looking at the roster for the Pistons game against the Wizards that he must have played Center in that game too, because Nazr only played 16 minutes.

Rasheed and Dale Davis didn't play that night and nobody else that played that night is capeable of playing C, except McDice and maybe Maxiell, but he only played 28 minutes (+16 = 44 minutes IF he actually played at Center), so even IF Maxiell played ALL of his minutes at Center then McDice would have ATLEAST played 4 minutes at Center too.

Add to this that Nazr was replaced by McDice and no Maxiell anywhere around on the court makes that MacDyess had to play Center.

3. Then we also have play-by-play from october 24th 2006:

1st quarter:
4:37 22-10 Antonio McDyess enters the game for Nazr Mohammed

with Ronald Dupree, Ronald Murray, Tashaun Prince and Carlos Delfino in the game there is really no question McDice played Center for the Pistons.

4. Then I also add in this small part:

First (official) day of camp ...
The Pistons just finished their morning session a little while ago, with no major injuries or developments to report other than a collision that nearly took out assistant coach Dave Cowens.

Not to worry, though. He's fine.

The first group consisted of the usual four (Chauncey, Rip, Tayshaun and Sheed) with the center position featuring Antonio McDyess and at times, Dale Davis.

Folks, DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT READ too much into that. Nazr is still, in all likelihood, going to be the starter come opening day.

However, for the first day, it made a lot more sense to have Dice and Dale run with the first group because of their familiarity with the different sets that Flip likes to run.

Speaking of McDyess, he's packed on a few pounds this summer. It's actually not a bad thing, especially with him likely to see more time in the middle this year with Ben Wallace gone.

In short Antonio McDyess has played Center in atleast two games so far and with Big Ben gone and Nazr replacing him, Rasheed and McDice are definitely going to see time at the Center position this season.

Mourning

Same as LA, circumstantial at best, not enough evidence (se Murphy change for a good case) to warrant a positional change

Ask me in a couple weeks; Kstat was telling me he thought McDyess might see time at C this year to allow Jason Maxiell time to play at 4.
