Today I'll break down our 2's. Check out my thread on our 1's from yesterday http://www.pacersdigest.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=25292
Walsh and Bird created quality depth this past summer with all their acquisitions they made. With all our injuries and turbulent history as of late we needed depth at all positions. Now we are set to compete even when we potentially might lose a player as is the case at the 2 position.
- SJax, Jax represents a real dilemma for the Pacers. I'll go over the positives first. 1. He shows up and plays. At the very least injuries haven't taken him out of the lineup that often. 2. He is one of the few perimeter players we have that can create his own shot and this is vitally important for us to have. However, with the addition of Harrington and Tins being healthy we aren't is bad shape as we used to be here. 3. He is a threat to shoot the three and we don't have a lot of perimeter players that are true threats. We need shooters to open up the post for O'Neal and dribble penetration. 4. He can defend 2 and 3's effectively. 5. With him in the lineup he is the number 3 scoring option and frees up Tins and Runi to run the offense and get eveyone involved and not have to worry about shooting too much.
Negatives: 1. He might not be available for the season because he could be in jail. 2. Do we really want a guy who says he's committed to being a professional and then goes out and does what he does on our team after all that we have been through in the past few years. 3. He kills the ball movement in our offense when he takes the ball and runs time off the shot clock going one on one. This ok on occasion, but he does it too often and frequently at the worst time in the game possible. 4. He takes bad shots, early in the shot clock and does not have a good understanding of when its a good time to shoot or not shoot. He basically just shoots is all the time. 5. He's not a good passer basically because he's only looking to shoot. 6. He'll turn the ball over because he forces shots. 7. He's a volume shooter. He needs to attempt alot of shots to score points because he doesn't hit for a high percentage from the outside. He'll get numbers when he puts up alot of shots or when he is hot.
Jax can be a real asset to our team, but not if he is in jail or shooting to much.
- Quis, really haven't seen much of his game, but from what I know he can get to the rim, defend on the perimeter (I still don't know why Avery didn't use him against Wade in the Finals, he has the size, strength quickness and smarts to defend the best scoring 2's in the NBA). He's got a good handle and is a good passer. However, he can't shoot from the perimeter and consequently he won't create as much space as Jax can for O'Neal to operate. He's really a good asset of the bench too and would strengthen our 2nd unit.
I'm confortable with him starting or coming off the bench. Let's hope the strip club incident is the one and only for him.
- Marshall, can't comment I haven't seen him play, but it sounds like he is aggressive going to the basket, but lacks an outside shot. At the very least he hasn't got in trouble off the court and he play's hard and aggressive. He is a good fall back of Jax is off the team and we need a backup for Quis.
- White, probably best sitting and watching this year. I haven't seen him play, but Carlise usually doesn't play rookies and from what I hear I'm not sure he is ready.
- Runi, ok when we want to have to 1's in the game together. With him an Tins in together we have great ball movement and his shooting can open up the floor for O'Neal and Harrington to operate. A lineup with Tins, Runi, Jax, Harrington and O'Neal has the potential to put a lot of points on the board if we are forced to play at a pace where we can't run and O'Neal would love this setup because it means he'll be posting up with alot of space. However, the matchups have to be right for Runi to be able to guard the other teams 2.
I'll be back to go over our 3's next time.
