Jack looks really good tonight. Rawle looks okay, but not main rotation caliber. He's the least effective guy out there.

I'm a little worried about Foster/Al against May/Okafur. They're having trouble with them.

Marshall made a tough layup, but he missed the pass to Al for a sure dunk instead. He also fumbled Jack's 1 hand pass earlier and just struggled to finish after Tinsley set him up pretty good on the 3-2 break.

Still Rawle looks good enough to make the team for sure.

One thing hurts you with Foster, you can't post him up. Tinsley was ready to make a play but Jeff can't/wouldn't go to the low block. They had to rotate out to Al instead.

I'd say that Jeff is going to have to come off the bench most nights.

Powell in for Jeff, this should help on offense.

Powell just made a great defensive stand a few trips ago. Bobcats rotated it out for the FT jumper make, but still. A lot of poise, avoided the shot fake bait but kept his arms in position to deny it if he did go up, was still able to stay ahead when he tried to spin for better position.

That stuff doesn't show in the box score, but that's solid defense.

Ely gave him some trouble, but that was just Ely's reach and talent on a couple baskets.

Couple decent sequences for Baston might get him going.

Notice that they are using SarJas as a double-PG rather than a 1-2 situation. They run plays to get him the ball and reset the court with him on point instead. Same with Tins out there with him.

When they get the hang of it this gives them a fluid court, able to shift the post or run a 2nd PnR quickly on the opposite side.

That is the point that I was trying to make after the first preseason game. It seemed to me then that when Tins and Saras were on the floor at the same time, they were not functioning as a 1-2, but rather as a PG tandem. This seems to be something that Rick is trying in preseason.

They did it a little last year when there was a window that Tins, SarJas and AJ were all playing, Cabbages and Tins together I mean and working a bit more 1-1b.

Tinsley is pretty decent without the ball and is comfortable going to the post with his man, which makes this a good option.

Man, how good was that 2 man ball between Jack and Tinsley! Sets up the layup after both showed 3s and then moved the ball. I have to say that Jack is playing a very respectible game. I'll be very pleased if this is what he is going to bring this year.

Posted this before but it didn't go through, after Powell hit the long jumper...

Wow, Powell with crazy range.

Notice on that play it was the 1/5 PnR with the 4 on the opposite elbow that they've been running. Main option is pass into the 5 in the lane, 2nd option is pass to the 4, entry pass to the 5 in the lane if the defense fronts, 3rd option is the 4 elbow jumper.

In this case they showed it too early but Powell hit a jumper 2 feet behind the elbow even. Powell's game makes him a great backup for JO because they can effectively use him in JO's role for most of the playbook.

aceace - I agree, Morrison has crazy offensive game. I felt pretty good about him because of the type of scoring he did in college, and it appears that it is translating very well. He's just got so many options in the toolbox.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with this statement. We haven't even seen what Williams will be able to do yet. The kid is 20 years old and hasn't played a single regular season game. Give him some time before we shove him aside for a couple guys that have fringe players in the league the past couple of years.

Very true. Williams is not productive yet, but you can see it. He will be both a great rebounder and great shooter in a couple years. They need to hang onto him. He seems like a bigger, better version of James Jones.

My only question is what position he will play. He seems like a PF, but he needs to add a lot of strength.

Naptown_Seth
10-19-2006, 08:26 PM
You keep Williams because in 3 years he will be better than the other players, barring some nice jump in their games too.

Greene 100% must stay. I really do think he'll be the #2 PG by sometime in December at least.

No way Powell can go, he could even be in the rotation despite Foster and Harrison.

It just about has to be between Marshall and Baston, and it's going to hurt either way. The problem with Baston is that I think his game is a bit more 1 dimensional. Doesn't really have a jumper you trust, not a great post offense player.

Someone mentioned this the other day, the playing time seems to indicate who the Pacers are trying to decide between somewhat. Seems like that's why Marshall is getting the chances he is.

Again we have to keep in mind that tonight you have no Daniels, JO, Granger or Harrison (so far at least).

I think Jack has played a very good game. Maybe 1 forced shot, everything else has been the look you want. I don't recall seeing him shoot 5 threes, but the couple misses I did see he was wide open.

He's attacked the basket which is why he has so many FTs. That's a big difference from the last few games - FTA's. They got killed 2 games in a row at the line but tonight they're dealing the punishment instead.

Tinsley is looking more like himself tonight. Not the numbers but the style. Several behind the backs (that were good passes), lots of craftiness in his game like screening out the big on that last pass in the lane for the layup, etc. You can read his body language and see that he is feeling it.

That was a perfect example of good play on the transition. Jack and Al spaced well, Al went to the lane and Jack drifted to the 15' spot to force the defense to choose. They left Jack, Tins hit him, nice make.

I don't consider 18 points that productive on 15 shots. Not terrible, but we need something better out of a SG.

This is a typical Jack game. Not particularly good from a points per FG attempt perspective. Horrible 3pt shooting at 20%.

Jack is a good player, just not a good SG. He makes a better SF IMO. He really is effective going to the rim and getting fouled.

EDIT: only Tinsley is doing worse from a points per FG attempt metric.

Naptown_Seth
10-19-2006, 08:52 PM
Remember when everyone said Ammo's downfall was his lack of speed? He's been keeping up with Jax all night...
Morrison is a terrible matchup for Jack. He's got the length on him and is quick enough to deal with Jack, who is not the most agile SG, more of a strength SG IMO.

Morrison isn't taking him to the post really, so Jack hasn't been in a situation that gives him the advantage. Of course Jack has been free to roam on the other end most of the night.

Normally you have Granger on Adam and I think you win that battle despite Adam's scoring ability.

I don't consider 18 points that productive on 15 shots. Not terrible, but we need something better out of a SG.
Have you looked at the Points Per Shot leaders at the SG spot? 1.20 is fine. It's not Wade (a sick 1.40 roughly last year), but Jack won't be getting a max deal anytime soon either.

Hinrich last year - 1.19, Joe Johnson - 1.18, Rip - 1.22, Ben Gordan - 1.17

Morrison is a terrible matchup for Jack. He's got the length on him and is quick enough to deal with Jack, who is not the most agile SG, more of a strength SG IMO.

Morrison isn't taking him to the post really, so Jack hasn't been in a situation that gives him the advantage. Of course Jack has been free to roam on the other end most of the night.

Normally you have Granger on Adam and I think you win that battle despite Adam's scoring ability.

If Morrison is as quick as Jax then he will be ROTY hands down, I swear he wasn't that quick at Gonzaga.

WTF SarJas!?!

White was left 15 feet wide open and Cabbages forced an awkward, defended jumper?

Admittedly, White hasn't looked very impressive tonight, though he hasn't played much either.

Powell OTOH, extremely strong.

Based on tonight, yeah. But the thing is that if he were borderline I think they would have been working he and Marshall back and forth more at the 2. If you see White go to zero minutes or to 30 minutes, then you have to think there could be trouble.

No. I am saying Jack is not an efficient scorer. He not only has a bad ppa, it is the worst among all starting SG's in our division...probably other divisions as well. He can't even beat Ben Gordon and Larry Hughes. Heck, Michael Redd rips him to pieces at 1.34. An inefficient scorer who shoots a lot for your team, is NOT a good thing.

Hopefully, DG's hammy isn't as bad as missing this game may indicate. It would be nice to what DH developed during the summer besides a six pack;) . They definitely aren't cutting JW and it seems like Saras played pretty well as did Tins. Looks like Marshall's gone.

Spoken like someone who didn't watch the game. I love stats, but I would NEVER go by the stats over what I watched.

SarJas was very hit and miss. But overall better tonight than in game 1. Odd that the Bobcats didn't pressure the ball much all night. They were big on attacking at least the passing lanes last year. Much more passive tonight.

Actually White finished fine so I'm still not buying him being gone just yet.

Baston fouled out of his 2nd straight game in only 18 minutes, did it in 11 the night before IIRC. He has no jumper. Great shot blocker, good defensive awareness down low as well, obviously can finish inside. In a normal year he'd make the squad for sure. I really would have loved to have had him instead of Edwards in that post-brawl game for example.

But right now with JO, Al, Foster, Harrison and Powell directly in front of him, and Shawne as the 4 in 2-3 years...I just don't know.

If we are talking about needs and concerned about Jack's status with the team, then that is another reason to keep both Marshall (how can they not after another solid game) and White.

If they cut Marshall that would be a huge mistake. He has the physical skills and also the game awareness to along with it. He is built a lot like Reggie
with the very long arms. He does not have any long game like Reggie but he can drive and dish and hit the inside jumper. Powell has earned a spot also.
I would hate to see White cut. It is between Baston and White.
Harrison or Foster are trade possibilities.

I hope you're right. I see Marshall getting a lot better. He has great physical tools, is aggressive, confident and seems like a smart guy. He is longer and more physical than Reggie. He's solid on D particularly for a young guy. He fits this team perfectly. He is good at the line....blocks shots with extremely long arms....had several steals tonight...what's not to like? Maybe his range...but that's about it.

Yes, as the team has been close in those games for the most part, and then lost big at the end when JO was long gone.

The offense was as stumbling as it has been. They are trying all sorts of things, not just lineups, but running through the whole playbook and some different styles of play. You see low post sets, high PnR plays, baseline screens for SGs, and of course running on transitions when possible.

The flow came mostly from Tinsley's game, but otherwise it was a potpouri of offense.

It's preseason, no Granger, no JO, no Daniels. We haven't see the "team" yet.

Flight isn't getting cut. That would be a tragedy. I'd sooner lose Baston, Sarunas, Harrison or Jackson than cut White.

He fits the mold of what the Pacers are trying to become perfectly. He can hit the midrange shot, takes it strong to the basket, is fast & athletic and a big time weapon on the fast break, also plays solid defense, is team oriented and can play 2 and a half positions.

Also, with the lack of 3 point shooting ability on this team.....not that White's a sharpshooter, but at this point he's one of the better perimeter shooters on the team, for whatever it's worth.

Would make no sense to cut him and keep, say, a 31 yr old pouting backup PG who can't dribble, struggles with his shot and plays terrible defense.

If Rajon Rondo is healthy he will be a top 5 rookie this year.

And I honestly think all that conditioning Ammo did has increased his quickness and stamina. Hopefully the diabetes doesn't get in the way with longer, faster games.
