David Stern conceded for the first time that reverting to the old leather ball is a possibility if the rigorous testing he has just ordered validates the widespread complaints about the ball.

Sounds like a successful marketing campaign for Spalding. They managed to talk the NBA into using a ball that was cheaper to produce, would sell at roughly the same price, and wore out more quickly.

On the upside, I got to feel the ball the Pacers were using at the Fan Jam. It's...different. It feels like it would have much better grip when dry, but I could see how it could become very slippery when it got wet.

Really, if they want to institute this new ball, I think they should get the NCAA and HSAA's to start using it, that way when guys get to the pros, it's not so radically different.
