With a ton of contract money comign off the Pacers cap, both this offseason, and next the Pacers look to finally be able to take on some more salary.

So which would you prefer - we use our MLE this offseason or we wait untill sometime around the trade deadline, and move Croshere's $10M expiring contract for a team looking for a salary dump?

I think we could reasonably do both, but if I have to choose just one, I'd say use the MLE.

Even with a weak FA class this summer, using the MLE gives you a known commodity or two (if you split the MLE) that will be around during training camp and the first 1/2 of the season for learning the new () offense and building chemistry.

Banking on a team wanting Cro's contract at the deadline and being able to get talent that fits a need in return is a bit of a gamble. Plus you lose out on 1/2 a season with the player(s) you trade for.

And one more thing, Cro is still a good character veteran, good for chemistry, Rick likes him, etc. so I don't have a problem if he sticks around -- not just the rest of his contract, but longer if he can be signed to a reasonable deal when he's a FA.

In my opinion this is Austin Croshere's final season as a Pacer if he is even here this season. The league is going more and more to quicker , more athletic player .

Croshere is now 31 he could well find himself behind Shawne Williams on the depth chart as teams go smaller with more and more frequecy.

Croshere has had a nice run here (made millions)and has been a good soldier but I don't see him as a Pacer after this season.

I see the mle being used on a banger type .

I think you're right about how to use the MLE. By far, the best free agents this summer who warrant the MLE or less fall in the PF/C group:

Nazr Mohammed, Francisco Elson, Darius Songaila, Lorenzen Wright, Michael Olowokandi, Antonio Davis

I'd be happy with any of those first 4

And preferably one of the first two IMO with LW a distant 3rd.

If Croshere is still backing up JO next year I'm gonna be sick. Horrible, horrible player. And the fact that Rick Carlisle will steal Danny's minutes to play Croshere, it makes me hate Croshere even more.

I would love to keep Croshere just because I have a soft spot for those old time Pacers. Werid I know.

If we can package Crosere to dump Tinsley or Jackson it would be worth it though.

Because of how high our salary cap is already we won't use the MLE this year unless we lose someone to free agency, or do a two for one trade.

I also doubt we dump Cro for talent since we need him coming off are own salary cap.

I agree with you regarding Croshere, we need his salary off the books. So, if we get rid of his contract at all, I see us taking back maybe a $3M - $4M contract near the trade deadline coupled with maybe a $4M ending contract.
