I'm not the most avid college basketball fan, but Josh Boone in the 2nd round for us? I haven't heard much talk about Rondo here, but reading up on him ... he sounds like what we need at PG besides not being able to shoot.

What do you guys think?

Sounds good to me, however I don't think Bird would take someone that can't shoot very well.

Sweet! Fernanadez projected after us, and Rodriguez projected the pick after us. We need to take them!

You can't expect every player on your team to be good shooters. He even said the biggest problem was athleticism at PG. You have to sacrifice something to take care of bigger issues sometimes.

We shall see.

If the Pacers take Rondo, it will take me months to recover. He's going to have to work extremely hard for years to improve that wretched shot.

I don't really want Rando. Although I love his speed, I think that this is such a deep point guard drafts and I have Rando as maybe the 6th best point guard in this draft behind Randy Foye, Marcus Williams, Jordan Farmar, Kyle Lowry, Serigo Rodriguez, and then Rando. Rando has a awful shot and I am not for sure how good of a floor general he is but I don't think he as good as the other ones mentioned above.

And I'll be very happy. His shot is the least of our concerns. He's super quick, long and defends on the ball EXTREMELY well. With Jermaine, Danny,Peja, David, we have enough shooters. We need someone to get them the ball, push the pace and most importantly, stop penetration on the defensive end.

With Jermaine, Danny, Peja, David we have enoug shooters??????? Maybe you meant scoring when you said shooters but Peja is the only shooter from that group. Even if you did mean scoring Peja and Jermaine are the only scorers from those 4. I don't really think other teams are worried about Danny and David scoring on them, let me put it that way.

I agreee that we need someone to get others the ball, but I don't think Rajon is that guy.

Hmm...I really wasn't too impressed with what little I saw of Rondo this season. He got a lot of hype early on, though.

I like the specs on Rondo, but the lack of a shot is frightening. For instance, Tinsley was regarded as a mediocre to poor shooter, whereas Rondo is considered to be a HORRIBLE shooter, and we saw what defenses did against Tinsley his first few years in the league. I want a quick PG who can play D, but he's gotta be able to keep the defense honest, also. For that reason, at our pick if I was going to get a PG, I'd rather snag Lowry and hope his defense improves, or get Diaz and hope he can work on his distributing.

To be fair, Tinsley was never as quick as Rondo. Rondo probably could penetrate his way to a better shot.

That being said, I still prefer Mardy Collins and considering Chicago is looking to take Douby with 16, Collins (theoretically) could drop down to us.

The only two players the Pacers should be worrying about are Mardy Collins and Kyle Lowry. I'd be EXTREMELY happy with either of those two.

Collins gives you a decent scorer, a very good distributor, and an excellent defender.

Lowry looks to pass first so the scoring isn't there, so he's an awesome distributor, and an excellent defender.

Either would turn one or more of our current PG's into tradebait.

I've been looking at some of the players that might be available at #17 on PD NBA Draft thread we're doing & I kinda think Collins might be our guy. I would rather have Redick but I'm liking what I'm hearing about Collins.

Me, too, Jose. Imagine that. I've been mentally crossing my fingers that he can drop to us. I'm kinda high on the guy and am surpised he's not projected as going much higher. I would love to get him.

That being said, my truly secret draft wish that most likely not happen is that we somehow get Tiago Splitter, despite his buyout clause. Give me either one of these guys and I'll be very happy.

Mine too.

Scouting Report: A talented, athletic big man with great hands.

Strengths: Great defender Splitter uses his long frame and decent strength to play great man-to-man D.

Definite top ten pick if not for the buyout.

If Rodney Carney is going to drop that far I would try to do just about anything to trade up and get him, he will be a superstar. He has the defensive ability the athleticism and of course he is an Indiana kid.

Why in the world would Chicago take Mardy Collins? I guess they don't think they are deep enough at Guard? Maybe they aren't but that still just seems like a silly pick to me. Anyway, as for Rondo, we could use his speed to run the fast break, then all we will need someone to run with him. The only other "runner" i think we have is Freddie. Freddie and Rondo coming off the bench to run the break would be a nice change of pace. All that said, I still like Collins better.

He sounds like T.J Ford to me which isn't all that bad. I agree with
everyones concern about his shooting % but Tinsley and Parker
are also that way. His only saving grace to me would be if he could
create enough dribble penetration to collapse defenses and distribute the
ball well..

I wouldn't know what to do if our guards could actually stay in front of their
man.

Well, I'd hope to buy him out immediately or after one year. If you have to wait the full two years on his contract, that would be tough but if he's better, fine.

I remember taking Rick Robey instead of waiting a year for Larry Bird (under the rules at that time) because we needed help right away.

Not saying he's that impactful, but I think that ANY draft pick after the top 10 is usually somebody you can't count on to contribute immediately, so waiting shouldn't be that much of an issue.

And we can earnestly work on the master plan of sucking next year to get Greg Oden ping pong balls. ;)

No. And neither is JO. Any team that picks Splitter picks him simply because he has such great talent, you don't want to pass on it. Don't count on him to fill any team needs, however.

I did a quick scan of some of the Mock Drafts that are out there from various Websites and summerized which players the "so-called" experts think the Pacers will draft.

The tally is as follows:

2 votes for Mardy Collins ( 6-6 PG Senior from Temple )
2 votes for Jordan Farmer ( 6-2 PG Sophmore from UCLA )

1 vote for Marcus Ager ( 6-4 SG Senior from Michigan State )
1 vote for Tiago Splitter ( 6-11 PF from Brazil - Tau Vitoria )
1 vote for Rajon Rondo ( 6-2 PG Sophmore from Kentucky )
1 vote for Sergio Rodriguez ( 6-3 PG from Madrid - Estudiantes Club Madrid )
1 vote for Cedric Simmons ( 6-10 PF Sophmore from North Carolina State )

The consensus that I am able to gather ( like we didn't know ) among the various websites is that the Pacers will likely draft a PG unless a solid Big Man ( like Cedric Simmons or Tiago Splitter ) is available.

Just to make things easier....can a Mod merge all the "Draft / Mock" threads into a single thread so that we don't have about 10 different threads about the draft?

I have zero problems drafting Splitter even knowing that he won't be available for another year or two. He will enter the draft at some point over the next two seasons......and I would much rather get him now then have someone else pick him up.

The only concern is that I think that this will leave us short handed for another year....but it all depends on what we are going to do during the offseason. If we blow up the team and trade the entire starting lineup...then I don't mind waiting. However...if we decide to go the safe route and build around JONeal and Peja....then our window is smaller and therefore can't afford to wait for Splitter.

I think that what rexnom is saying is that because of the buyout clause and the difficulty associated with Splitter's team owners in letting him go. From most accounts.....it looks like this entire process of getting him into the States is likely to take another season or two.

There's a lot of experts that say Tiago is a better player than Bargnani. Spilitter was even projected as a top 10 pick last year. Why aren't more teams interested, IMO he's worth the buyout.

Am I the only one interested in Hilton Armstrong? DPOY in the Big East with over 3 blocks per game. His offensive numbers are not impressive in college, but surrounded by the Okafors, Ben Gordons, Villanuevas, Rudy Gays, Marcus Williams' and Rashad Andersons of the world, he was never needed for anything more than a putback here and there.

And even if his offense doesn't improve much, this is a guy that will start at center for us on opening night and bring plus defensive every game. He's the exact guy JO is talking about in helping out with the dirty work and would take all the defensive pressure off the guy.

I know the upside of Foye and Rondo (who i hate) is appealing, but at pick 17, I'd rather have a guy that I know has legit NBA athleticism, size and ability that will be on the court in a Pacers uniform nightly for the next four years.

Unless we can get Roy, Williams or Carney, Hilton is our next best option, IMO. No reason to take a flyer on Splitter when Armstrong is available to step in immediately to allow Foster to be what he is: an energy guy off the bench.

Then again, think about it THIS way. We drafted Antonio Davis in 1990...then he went over seas for two years. I think most would agree that he was an impact talent worth waiting for when he finally got here. Even waiting two years for Tiago, I think would pay off in the end and may be worth the wait.

Yeah, two years is a loOOoong time, but it may be the same as getting a top-5 to 10 draft pick as a young kid who you leave on your bench as he develops for a couple of years. End result, you don't get dividends for a few years. I daresay, IF we got him, by the time he got here, he'd be able to step right into things and be an impact.

BUT, ur also wasting a good pick on him. It isn't rare to pick a guy like this with ur second round pick (see Lorbek, Scola, Ginobili).

This was the problem with Fran Vazquez last year. He is not a bad player, but they could have gotten Danny or Joey Graham with that pick. Too high to wait. Spltter should wait a couple of years and then he'll be top ten for sure.
