Szczerbiak had an MRI on his left knee Thursday at a hospital, team spokesman Jeff Twiss said. After consulting with the team physician and Celtics officials, Szczerbiak will have arthroscopic surgery early next week.

"We fully expect him to return next year," Twiss said Friday.

Szczerbiak averaged 17.5 points in 32 games with the Celtics after being acquired from Minnesota on Jan. 26.

He is expected to be ready for training camp in October. Typical recovery time for arthroscopic knee surgery can be anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on what type of damage is discovered.

Coach Doc Rivers said Szczerbiak's procedure was an opportunity to clean out debris.

"I know a bone bruise showed on the MRI that we didn't foresee," he said. "The bone bruise made it more of an immediate need [to have surgery]."

Wow, players are going down in droves this season.

That is, unless they happen to be wearing a Pistons jersey.
