Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson has cancer

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Turner Sports studio host Ernie Johnson revealed Wednesday that a swollen lymph node under his ear is the result of a cancer diagnosis he received in 2003.

Johnson released this statement:

"Two and a half years ago, in August of 2003, I was diagnosed with 'follicular' Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This is a low-grade and treatable cancer -- not as aggressive as some other forms...The only reason I'm bringing my condition to your attention now is because the swelling of a lymph node near my left ear has become noticeable to viewers of TNT and there have been questions asked."

Johnson will continue to work throughout the rest of the NBA regular season and playoffs and will likely undergo chemotherapy treatment in June.

He is in his 16th year with Turner Sports and currently hosts TNT's NBA and PGA golf coverage, as well as TBS' Pac-10 and Big-12 college football.

I wish him a safe and speedy recovery.

I think he is the engine that makes that show run. He is able to balance Kenny and Charles out perfect, and you always need that guy who likes to just be laid back and doesnt mind looking like a fool.

He is a tough guy! He has put up with Charles for so long!

That lump on the side of his face was SOOO obvious during the AS game. I'm sure he was getting asked about it a lot.
Hope he ends up ok.

Poor Ernie, I hope he'll be okay. I enjoy watching him on TNT, he and Reggie are my favorite two people there. It must suck that he had people asking about it during all star weekend, it seems pretty obvious he didn't want anyone to know.

That's too bad. I wonder why he's only getting it treated now? 3 years with cancer! Perhaps this is a relapse. Either way, hope he get's well soon.

My prayers and thoughts with the Johnsons.

Glad he will continue to work through it.

About lymphomas. Cancer that has "re-occured" really never was cured initially. It may have shrunk with chemotherapy but there were still some bad cells left and its taken 3 years to recognize that those bad cells still were there and they've had a chance to divide and grow in size to where things become obvious. Recurrent cancer of any kind tends to not be curable. We can treat it - meaning, we can shrink it with chemotherapy, and make it not as difficult to live with, but often times we can not completely rid the body of it. And after one person has gone through chemotherapy once, as I am sure Ernie had, the body is less sensitive to chemotherapy the second time.

I'll be praying for him.

And he's out there every week, cracking chokes and keeping with Charles and Kenny.
Best wishes Ernie.

Wonder if Magic had some good advice for him...

I certainly noticed it. Wow.

He's a great guy, he and his wife adopted several special needs children.

 True. As VA said, he keeps those guys in line. When he's not there, it reminds me of a substitute teacher situation. They just run wild.

Yeah, did charles and kenny comment on the situation at all?

I meant to TIVO it, but I missed it due to other commitments, mostly school.

Anyone got a copy of what he said?

My dad gave me the run down, but I would like to see it, if at all possible.

Also, I really wanted to TIVO it to see Sir Charles and Kenny respond to it. What did they have to say?

Thanks

I saw what Ernie said, but Kenny and Chuck did not respond.

Looked like Ernie may have taped what he said earlier, he was not sitting at the table, I don't think

Ernie is my hero, that thing has to hurt.

Also, that speech makes you realize just how good he is at what he does. Very articulate.

Ernie has been my favorite studio host for about 10 years now. He has no ego at all.

I think Ernie taped it before they did the pregame show.

I love Ernie, I wish him all the best. The trio of Charles, Kenny, and him is the best. It makes you really appreciate that TNT is a place you can avoid Bill Walton.
