Hey folks... CableKC has been nice enough to set aside a few minutes at 8PM EST tonight (about an hour from now) to test out the Pacers public chat room on Yahoo! Messenger.

To really get a "feel" for it, we really need one or two others to get on and test the voice.

As long as you have a microphone, speakers/headphones and Yahoo Messenger (free download) you'll be able to get on.

-------
Also, sometime in the next few days we'll be testing out the teamspeak server that able has set up. Looking for volunteers for that too.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is there any NBA All-Star events on TV at that time?

Or are we gonna be logging into talk about whats on ESPN?

Im in the Pacer Public Chat room now on Yahoo IM....and they aren't talking about Basketball at all....they are talking about Porn and prostitution. I dont know if that is normal conversation or not...but its kind of wierd. I dont know if it would fit our immediate needs of talking BBall.

Im wondering if we should try the Private Yahoo IM Conference.

Oh, it gets better. Occasionally someone with drop in with some old-fashoned KKK racism just for kicks.

Thats why I hate public voice chats. People just use the opportunity to be even more offensive than normal. It's a troll's dream.

All it takes is one person, and you're forced to listen to reprehensible garbage the rest of the night.

We should probably do a private IM conference where we invite those that wants to join with someone as a designated Moderator or something. There is no way that we are going to be able to do a Game thread on a public chat room.

Agreed; it will only work as a private conference.

I just....

want...

to..

test the FEASIBILITY of doing chat on yahoo. I want to test the sound quality, whether or not there's a bad time lag, and see what happens when people make simultaneous noises (i.e. cheering). We're talking about a 5 min test. So we don't really HAVE to have a game on or whatever.

No one wanted to do it at 9pm. Soooooo... I picked this other (somewhat srbitrary) time. :-P

On another note, yes there are people talking about porn (some creepy-*** dude who sounds like he's wearing braces is talking right now.) The funny thing is, I have NEVER seen a single soul in that room until right now, which is why I didn't think a public room would be a big deal.

So, yeah, if people just log on, and put their username in this thread (or pm it to me), i will invite everyone to a private conference room and we can try this there.

Again, thanks to anyone who wants to try it out. I'll still shoot for 8PM and see what happens.

I'll tell you what.

If anyone is interested in doing this.....I can setup a Private IM Voice conference while watching the Celebrity game.

Just send me a private message with your IM id. Don't post it as PD is a public forum.

....you do realize a lot of people have their IMs public to begin with...

I'd go at 9PM for the rookie game, but this celebrtiy stuff aint worth it.

Suggestion.....if anyone does to this.....plug a headset into your computer so that you don't have any audio feedback.

If you run the Yahoo IM Audio Setup, there is a section on Microphone settings where you can talk into the computer to see if you have a mic built in or not.

Usually its a small pinhole somewhere. But worse comes to worse.....in the private IM Conference...you can type just like you do in the Thread and eveyrone can see the message while listening to those that do have a mic.

Well, after testing it out for a few minutes with CableKC, it appears that Yahoo isn't really the way to go, for one chief reason (bad quality notwithstanding)... it's not full-duplex.

In other words, you can only hear one person speak at the same time. If I start talking, everyone else is muted to me.

This really isnt a problem when doing business-type teleconferencing or conversation-based calls. In fact in that sense it may actually help.

But for us, who may or may not be hooting and hollering after big plays, it might be very uncool. Personally I'd like to hear people cheering etc, at least in theory.

Next time around (Thursday maybe?) we'll try it out with able's teamspeak server.

-------------------------------------------

Also, the eventual app I'm going to build might be taking a slightly different direction - I'm going to look at using Flash to show animated avatars in a chat setting. When people speak or yell, their avatar gets bigger and/or animates. There may actually be no audio OUTPUT with such an app, but it will read audio input and, in theory, the screen will get very animated when everybody makes noise.

Kinda hard to describe, but I'll show you guys a concept page a little later (maybe tonight).
