Ok, Im a fairly skilled PC user and do a lot of IT work for my company. Just to give an idea of my skill level.

I have a PIII 600 MHZ Dell at home. I was trying to install Norton Antivirus 2006 on my PC and it kept failing. So after looking through the Norton support forums, it suggested that if I had a previous version of PC anywhere or Norton antivirus on the computer to uninstall them and try again. Well I uninstalled Norton 2005. Same result. So I went to uninstall the PCAnywhere program and the Add remove programs wouldn't work.

So I went to Nortons support pages again, and found a way to manually remove PCA. Here's where I was a severe dumbass.

Part of the removal required removing some of the registry entries.

I should not have made changes to the registry without backing it up first. I made the changes they suggested. Then it told me to restart my computer. When I did so, the computer came up, windows started, but right away I knew something was wrong, as if my display drivers weren't working any longer with my background gone, the fonts being very large. When it finally got to the login screen(running windows 2000 professional) The keyboard and the mouse don't respond. At all.

So I restarted again, and tried to boot in safe mode. Was able to hit F8 to get to safe mode, but again when it finally got to the login screen, no response from the keyboard or mouse.

Ive been searching the internet today, but have found nothign on this issue anywhere.

Anyone got any ideas other than a fresh install of Windows? I hate to think that I lost everything on my hard drive since I hadn't backed it up in several months.

Any ideas?

Have you tried renoberating the partitions? They're like little closet organizers.

Well, I don't know Windows 2000 very well, but XP has a repair function and a restore latest functioning status options after hitting F8. Also, in XP if you reinstall over a previous install it won't erase your previous files it, just writes over the ones missing. Help any? I don't know if you can do anything without mouse and keyboard functions other than that.

VT, I'm gonna renoberate your attic. May the Wheaton-Taylor bitterness never end!

It actually ran very good up until I F@#*ed it up last night. Still reasonably fast for what I was doing, and has been a damn good computer. Was top of the line when I bought it in '99.

How did my request for tech support get to discussing Btown's Porn Collection?

Nevermind, I see I started it this time....

You could put in a different HD and install windows on that one, and then add the one that is fubar'd as a second hard drive to get your data off of it....

That is about all I can think of with a trashed registry...

If I reinstall windows, it will ooverwrite my data I'm assuming?

Not sure if you are replying to my post or not...

I was talking about getting a second hard drive, a temporary one if need be...

Just remove the fubar'd hard drive, and replace it with the new one. Install windows on that one, and then plug in the fubar'd one as a secondary drive (non-boot drive) and copy the data you don't want to lose to the good one that is now your boot drive. Then take out the good one, reinsert the fubar'd one as the boot drive and wipe it and reinstall windows, then put the good one in as a secondary one and copy the data back to the now-good one and then wipe the second one...

A big pain, I know. Does it give you a clean install of windows and solve the problem? Yes. Does it let you save your data? Yes, assuming that you are talking about files you want to save (like pics or music or whatever) and not programs. If you are trying to save programs that are installed on the fubar'd drive, I would say that you are fubar'd!

I'm certainly not the foremost authority on the subject of I.T., but I am fairly knowledgeable. I also asked the two uber-geeks in my IT department and they seemed to think you are fubar'd.

MOTHER OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE GOOD AND SACRED, I FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't ask me what I did, but I finally was able to get it to log in.

As funny as this is, I got into the set-up to see what the error it kept giving me was.

It was saying Keyboard error.

I was using a USB keyboard, but when I changed it out for an old PS2 Keyboard, I was able to get it to work on hitting F8 and was able to restore to last known good boot.

IT FREAKING WORKED!!!!!

Im going to be backing every gosh darn thing on my computer tonight, just in case before I turn this baby off again.

Thanks for the help Heywoode and MS.

Fantastic!

Glad to hear that something not drastic worked for you. You are a smart man to back everything up...
