View Full Version : Keeper League Invitation
01-28-2006, 09:26 AM
As many of you know, I've been the commissioner of a Keeper League that's something of a sister league to this one. We are currently in our third season and it's time for me to extend invitations to owners for our 4th.
Here are a few of the general rules the league operates under:
- Teams carry 9 players over on their roster from one year to the next
- Expansion teams have a separate expansion draft where they each select 9 unprotected players which gets them on a level footing entering our 3-rd, customized draft
- For the Expansion Draft Only, teams can only protect 8 players - and for this expansion draft new teams can't select most rookies. Rookies can only be picked in the regular draft
- Expansion teams will select first in the regular draft
- The scoring system is identical to this league
- Whenever possible we try to simulate the real NBA as close as possible. We have off-season trades (for now - there's a discussion on that right now), draft picks can be included in deals, and there's no option for multi-day drafts - we do it in one day, like the NBA. We don't have options not supported by the site, such as a salary cap, etc.
We currently have 18 teams in the league. Our long-term goal is to get to and maintain 20. Once we reach that level we'll only get new owners when they take over a team for someone who's dropped out. Right now we have two openings, but in recognition of his work with the PD site, Able has already been offered 1, and accepted.
Don't let that discourage you from trying to join though. We have yet to begin a season without an owner dropping out and a team becoming available - our best team (so far) this season has a new owner because someone had to drop out due to other commitments.
Here's the process if you're interested in joining.
Just send me a message stating you're interested sometime in the next 2 weeks. Feel free to include something of a campaign speech explaining why you'd be a good owner. I'll be closing that period sometime on the weekend of Feb 11th.
After that time, I'll begin a thread on the KL trash talk board where we'll discuss and vote on the prospective owners. Very simply, owners receiving the highest vote total will receive the first invitation to join.
I'm going to include a complete set of league rules as a reply to this post so feel free to look those over and ask any questions.
You can indicate interest in the league either by replying on this thread, sending me a PM, or e-mailing me at: cemanuel-at-accs.net (substitute @ for -at-). Also feel free to send me any questions you may have.
This is something of a long-term commitment (not that I'll hunt you down if you leave after 1 season) so please consider that. We've had a lot of fun with this over the years. For me at least it has something of a different feel when you have to consider personnel moves with the longer term in mind.
I'm sure I've forgotten something. I'll add items as I think of them.

Here's the most recent edition of the rules - they may be tweaked before next season though - we always review them toward the end of each season.
ABA KEEPER LEAGUE RULES
NOTE: Unless specifically addressed, all other Gametime rules (waiver pickups, trade deadline, etc.) will apply.
League Rules & Procedures:
Teams will retain 9 players from their current year's roster, to carry over to the following season.
Carryover rosters will be determined by the team's lineup for their final regular season game.
If a team receives a draft pick in a trade, that draft pick will be considered one of the team's protected players for the purposes of the draft.
Playoff teams will be allowed to adjust their rosters without penalty - however any roster changes made during the playoffs will not be eligible to be included in the following year's protected list.
Players who have announced their retirement after the current year and are dropped by teams eliminated from playoff contention are ineligible for pickup off waivers. These players are, however, eligible to be traded.
Offseason trade activity will begin August 1 and conclude when owners submit their protected list to the commissioner. Until the site opens, trades will be validated through three steps:
1) One of the participating owners sends the trade to the commissioner via e-mail
2) The other participating owner sends a confirmation e-mail to the commissioner and
3) The Commissioner replies to both owners confirming the trade.
Once the site opens, trades will be announced through a Trade thread on the trash talk page.
This pre-season trade "window" will end 72 hours prior to the beginning of the Expansion draft to allow the commissioner to put together a complete list of protected players - players already owned by a team and ineligible to be drafted.
Owners should provide the commissioner with an e-mail address which will allow them to receive attachments as the protected list will likely be sent via spreadsheet with players in alphabetical order. This does NOT need to be shared with anyone else, or the e-mail used in your profile on the site.
Draft Order will be determined in the following manner:
1) Regular season W-L record
2) Regular Season average team score
3) Coin fli ... - er, W-L record in close games (give the guy with the most heartbreakers the previous year some sort of consolation)
4) Beyond that, we'll think of something - maybe an e-mail rock, paper, scissors (don't laugh - it works!)
Teams will be sent a list of "protected players" - players ineligible to be drafted because they're already on a team - via e-mail at least two days prior to the start of the draft.
The draft will be conducted by e-mail or through a chat room, depending on the preference of the owners. There is a slim possibility of a temporary website but don't count on it - I'm not sure the effort would be worth a site that only lives for a few hours.
Each team will have 15 minutes to make their selection - with just three rounds we should be able to complete this draft within 2-3 hours.
Owners unable to participate in the draft live may submit a preference list to the commissioner. The length of that list is up to the owner's judgement but the longer the better.
Owners not present at the draft will not be given the full 15 minutes for their pick but will be skipped - IOTW, if you're not logged onto the site, we won't wait 15 minutes to skip you.
In order to prevent delays, teams that did not participate in the draft (made no picks) will have players not selected by other owners inserted into their roster.
Due to Gametime site rules there must be an even number of teams. If an owner drops out we will try to find a new owner to take over that team, rather than throwing the players into a pool to be drafted.
This will simulate the NBA where you generally buy a team. We will try very hard to have no 'bots but there are no guarantees. Keep in mind that right now dual ownership of teams are allowed - even if we start with a 'bot we may be able to plug a real person in there later.
If we decide to expand by adding a new team, the new team will be able to select their 9 players, as they wish, from unprotected players, with the exception of newly drafted rookies. They will then proceed to the regular draft, selecting 1st (in essence, they can select 10 players before anyone else picks). Beginning with this first pick in the regular draft rookies are eligible for selection. This is VERY open to discussion but I doubt they'll get a huge advantage since they'll be mainly taking players nobody really wants.
If there are two or more new teams an expansion draft will be held with the owner signing up for the league first selecting first. This expansion draft will be held by either e-mail or chat.
Expansion Teams will not be considered to be an official "team" until after the expansion draft. IOW, no trading of draft picks until that time.
Teams will be able to protect 8 players from the Expansion Draft and no more than one player may be selected from any single team.
Points = 1
Offensive Rebounds = 2
Defensive Rebounds = 1.5
Assists = 2
Steals = 2
Blocks = 2.5
Turnovers = -1.5
Personal Fouls = -.5
Technical Fouls = -1
This is the same system currently in use in the ABA Fantasy league - and seems to be generally accepted. However we can discuss this as long as it's finalized a few days ahead of the draft.
But keep in mind - once we plug the system in it has to stay there long-term - it wouldn't be fair for owners to keep players based on one scoring system and change to a substantially different system the following year. (Frex, what happens to Shawn Bradley if block values are dropped to 1?)
For those contemplating, I was invited to take over a team in another Keeper league, and even had a choice of teams, 1 very good and 1 very bad and 2 mediocre.
True to form I picked the worst, thinking it would be fun and not to intense (as I had no chance in playoffs anyway) to work with that and it would make clear whether I had "what it takes" to play in such a league, which is quite different from the year to year leagues.
Of course with the happenings to my team in this league I had time on my hands, but I must admit, it was fun beyond what I thought, though it took me some time to get the feel of the other owners.
I went from 78 ppg avg to 114 now and expect to end the season avg around 135 which by all standards is close to playoffs material. (this is a 28 team league)
Despite some thoughts I am sure that my team will be competing next year and that makes me happy.
Drafting, waiverwire, trades all become very important for the long term, no drops for injured players and such, trades for guys like JO and Magette in their current circumstances are still very hard to obtain, because there is next year to consider.
I can honestly say that it is GREAT fun and very well worth the time and that I am very gratefull of DK to allow me this chance.
I really hope you guys jump on this.

I'll throw my hat in the ring. I've wanted to be in a keeper league.

Sounds interesting. I'm willing to give it a go.

For those that are interested another member of this board, ShadowKat has formed another keeper league on the same site we are playing. As far as I know there will be several openings in that league as well. Dr. Badd, Pig Nash & I are members in that league as well. I'll know more after the season but for now, just remember, if you don't get the lone opening in Displaced Knicks keeper league, there is another option.

Just bumping this - I'll be putting folks up for a vote in the KL next weekend.
02-11-2006, 09:11 AM
OK - Hicks, Shade & Mourning are our candidates.
I'll post a thread on the KL Trash Talk Board asking for votes and discussion this afternoon. I'm going to close the voting at the same time as the trade deadline - Feb 21. I'll post the results here once they're out.
Keep in mind we only have one available spot - as of now.
If any of you have a campaign "speech" you want me to post, get it to me, either by PM or by posting it on this thread. I'll be putting a summary of your ABA activity - team record and scoring, posts & transactions, etc., on the KL Thread.
