The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

    Quick observations from the Jazz-Pacers pre-season game

    If you followed my advice from game 1 with N.J. you now feel better about yourself. Never take to much away from one game in the pre-season.

    Same applies for this game, however you will now start to see a pattern develop & it will continue throughout pre-season.

    Jon Bender. For as good as he looked in game #1 he looked totally useless tonight in game # 2. The Jazz cut off his driving lanes & he wasn't able to hit again from the field & they weren't fouling so he was useless. Well that is unless you consider fouling out of the game in very few min. usefull. Getting off of the floor was about the best thing he did all night. Now remember this I was at the game & drove all the way home before I wrote this & I did not listen to WIBC so until I saw U.B.'s post about Jon being injured I knew nothing about it.

    But let me say this now so that way I can offend everybody right up front. If he is claiming he had a bad game because of a sore knee he is full of ****. His knee didn't seem to impact (thanks Jay) his ability to jump at all tonight & I'm sorry but Okur & Kirlinko as well as Lang & others cut off the baseline so he had no lanes to drive it did not have one damn thing to do with his knee. I feel a Rik Smits coming on here. Whenever Jon plays good his knee will feel fine, whenever he plays bad it's because he has a sore knee. No it couldn't be because he had a bad game, it just couldn't be that.

    As happy as I was with him in game 1 I'm disgusted with him in game # 2 & to be honest I was totally willing to just let it go & write it off to just a bad game. But now I come home & read this crap, well I'm sorry but he just jumped right back up there with Mr. Nutso as Co-Captain of the "get them the fcuk out of town" train. Damn reading about him complaining about his knee p!sses me off .

    While I'm in a pissy mood I might as well talk about Jamaal Tinsley as well. I don't care if he hurt his back or not, he played like crap again tonight. I have yet to see the guy put together one good offensive set this season. Now I understand we are once again playing with makeshift lineups thanks to J.O. not being there, but still he has played totally uninspired ball. His defense on Williams was ok & he did disrupt him a little on the defensive sive but overall I was not pleased with his game at all.

    BTW, I really liked that Williams kid that Utah got. He is going to be a good pro-point guard.

    Well, one more worthless player I will talk about as well. I was praying that Carlisle would take Jackson off of the floor during the entire first half. God he was horrid in every way out there. But thankfully he came around in the second half & played much better, he couldn't have played any worse.

    Ok now I'll try & get a little more positive.

    Well, for the first time I finally saw in real life during a real game what the hell you people were talking about with Saraunus's passing. Forget the shooting because I knew that was there, but man the guy advances the ball very well. If Jamaal continues on his crapfest & this guy plays like this then I wouldn't be suprised at all to see Jamaal somewhere else as the season goes on. But again, it was just one game. So we'll see how he does vs. real games.

    Granger. I always like it when a players first NBA move is to block a shot. Yeah, I know he airballed his first shot from the floor but I don't care. He is very & I mean very active around the basket on both sides of the floor & it looks like he is going to take more than just a casual interest in rebounding. Not ready to be the starter yet, not YET anyway, but I think this guy will be very good.

    I'm not even going to cover Artest or Croshere because just like I said after game # 1 neither of their games have changed. If you liked them before you'll like them after this game & if you hated them well same goes for that as well.

    Pollard being injured damn near kills me because in the first quarter he actually made me forget..... Oh never mind. No in all seriousness the guy was playing the best basketball he's played since he's been here but like I said before, he can't play for very many games for very long.

    So now I want you all to welcome aboard Samaki Walker your new starting center for the Indiana Pacers. Unless they use J.O. or maybe Cro you can bet that Walker will be holding down the center spot till either Harrison or Foster return (whoever gets back first).

    I have no problem with Walker at all. He has a wide body, bangs & is not afraid to lean on a player on defense. He's not going to ever be an all-star but he is a decent solid backup. Why someone would insult him by calling him a bum is beyond me.

    Now back to the injury thing.

    Again, feel free to hate on me I can take it, but have you ever noticed that it's always the same old suspects that can't seem to play? I know I know were never supposed to question because every player is high on the moral standing chart & would never use an injury as an excuse nor as a reason to not play.

    Call me a hater, I know you want to, but there are a couple that I do question. One in particular, no names mentioned.

    Well, we won so that is a good thing. But coming home & reading some of this has just taken the wind out of my sails.

        Peck, as you know I stay away from questioning whether anyone is injured or not or how injured someone is. But in the preseason they always error on the side of caution

            Well Peck, I'm in ageement about a quite a bit of what you wrote.

            Cabbage: Okay, let's fess up. The guy has slow feet. Deron toyed with him time and again and especially caused him problems when he ran him off screens. Help D covered for Cabbage quite ba bit. Because of our team D, I don't think it's going to be much of a problem.

            His passing? You know how some guys run the point and they look kinda panicky? Twitchy as they look for someone to pass off to? Cabbage looked really comfortable and if the other players didn't get open running off low post screeen, Saras simply drove the ball himself, keeping an eye on someone popping open. He would have had a couple more assists, but I can count three times wher he made a pass into the post to a moving man and the guy bobbled it. In terms of being a Reggie replacement, I noticed wuite a few times where he floated around the three line but not BEHIND IT after dishing into the post. THe D left him alone. Hope the rest of the league follows suit. If Jackson would have opened his eyes, we migt have gotten a couple of spot up threes for Sara. Once again, several times, he barked at Granger on where he needed to be on O and D.

            Granger: I am HYPED about this kid. Remember how much we talked about the deer in the headlights look from Bender. Granger is the exact opposite. Especially on D. I though his decisions on help D were phenominal. He strikes me as a very smart kid. Never looked lost. I thought it was interesting that they tried to run the O through him from the high post several times.

            Walker: "bum"? As I said before, this is a guy that just needs a home...and I think he's found it. He hustled, bodied up on D and was generally pretty solid.

            Bender: I'm not going to be so hard on Johhny B. Yeah, they cut off the driving lanes, but, in my mind, I felt the coaching staff told him, "No spot up jumpers!! Drive, drive, DRIVE!!!" I think they're looking for Johnny to be a midrange penetrator. Look at where they kept getting him the ball: about 10-12 feet out, olff the wing. He had to kep making lateral moves across the lane and kept forcing the shot. I would bet even money, he was instructed to to so. His D? Very, very average. He would try to bump his man, but there wasn't much strength behind it. I think the coaching staff is trying to establish a clear, define role for him. Just my thinking, I could be wrong, but looks that way to me.

            Tinsley: He looked to me to be very dispassionate. I didn't see any fire from him.

            Deron Williams: DAMN!! I know it's one game, but talk about a kid playing with confidence! Phew!! He as aggressive on both ends of the court. Need a dish? He made some offensively perceptive passes. On D, he hararassed and didn't let up. Need a score. He drove AND took jumperts, planting both feet first. I just became a fan. Don't let him fall to me in the Keeper fantasy league, guys. Wait...DO.

            Let me add, I liked JO not being in there. Not to diss Jermaine, but we had this muliple screen thing going on, rather than dump it into the post and work from there. I liked it. Hopefully we'll run things the same way with JO in there.

            That's my take on things.

              I've thought all along that he'll be the top PG to come out of this year's draft class. Big and very strong, quicker than you think and really knows how to run an offense. He can take contact and just keep on going as well as any PG that's in the league - even as a rookie. Felton and Paul both are in the "little Point Guard" group and I just don't think that works in the NBA any more - you have to be able to take a beating. Guys like them (and Boykins and Nate Robinson) are great for a change of pace but give them 35-40 mpg and see how long they last.

              The other PG nobody paid much attention to that I like is Jarrett Jack but he's stuck behind Telfair in Portland so I'm not sure how much PT he'll get. But his game's a lot like Williams with a little better shot and a little less strength and defense (but not bad). We'll see how it all comes out.

              A lot of people pointed to PG's as the strength of this draft but I disagree - I think it was swingmen - Williams, Green, Graham, Granger, etc. Some good PG's but the long-term stars will be swingmen IMO.

                Great, thanks guys for the in person observations..Sounds like from what i have seen and heard Granger is as good and as fundamental as advertised very exciting there. Saras is coming around we knew he was not going to be the quickest PG especially on D but then again what Pacer PG has been in recent years so hopefully our team and helpsside D can compensate for that.

                Walker should go ahead and put a down payment on some real estate on the northside this weekend.

                  Did anyone see how Pollard got hurt? To me it seemed like he did it inbounding the ball, but that can't be right. Can it?

                  Jamaal took a tumble trying to get to the hoop at the end of the half. Apparently that's when he hit his back.

                  Granger was solid on both ends. May have forced a couple of shots, but no complaints. I'm not sure about his goaltending call; I thought it was clean. He came across the lane to help Sarunas after Williams got by him, and I thought Danny got to the shot before it hit the board. The scoreboard replay had a poor angle, so I'm not sure.

                  Bender tried to force too much action on offense. Whenever he got it in an isolation, he tried to lower his head and Croshere into the lane. Although Bender did try to go behind his back a couple of times and lost control. Croshere wouldn't try that.

                  Croshere did a lot of Croshere-ing into the lane, too, and drew a lot of fouls. He took a pretty good beating. On one he was going up for a two handed jam and got hit and landed awkwardly; almost like he was going to do the splits. He came out of the game shortly after, then went to the locker room. He came back and played, though.

                  Sarunas was fun to watch, not only for the shooting, but because he's not "cool". He seemed considerably more excited about playing than most: talking to his teammates, talking to himself, high fiving after good plays. Sarunas and Granger both showed some excitement during the 4th qtr. rally. Although I'm not going to blame the other guys for not being too excited about playing the Jazz in preseason.

                  I know Ron scored well, but to me he looked big and slow. He has broad shoulders, which normally gives him a V shape. I thought he looked more like a U last night.

                  Edit: Oh and hopefully eating that dunk on the front of the rim will give Ron some extra incentive to drop a few.........

                            I want to reclarify this so there can be no confusion.

                            I had no problem with Jon Benders game last night. Well, let me restate that, he had a bad game & I can live with that. Every player has one of those nights & I was way way way more than willing to just chalk it up to one of those games. It happens, no big deal.

                            But where I about lost my mind was when I read him start complaining about his knee & how he would have to sit out a game or two.

                            Sorry folks, I don't buy it. I think his knee is now a crutch. Everytime he has a bad game it's because his knee hurts. I lived through this with Smits for years & truthfully I just am sick of it.

                            Does his knee hurt? I don't know & frankly I don't care at this point in time.

                            Al Harrington blew his knee out, I'll say that again, HE BLEW HIS KNEE OUT. We all saw it & most of us were sickened by the sight of it.

                            Yet, Al, when asked about soreness in his knee replies "yes, it's sore but you have to play on".

                            To the best of my knowledge Jon Bender has never blown out his knee.

                            Jon's knee didn't seem to bother him when he was doing the jump ball & was an arm & a half length above the Utah player. Jon's knee didn't seem to bother him going up for that block.

                            I'm telling you at this point in time it's in his head. If he can't do what he wants to do on the floor it's because of his knee.

                            Sorry gang, I just don't buy it. Mix me a batch of hateraid.

                              Peck, you don't have the slightest idea how bad his knee is. Neither do I. But he looked horrible last year, he could barely run or jump.
