I know alot of people that are into sports also enjoy collecting memoribilia. Personally, I collect basketball cards, old and new. I thought it would be a good idea for those of us who have basketball cards (or anyone with the hobby of collecting sports mem.) to have our own thread. This thread's soul perpose is for us to talk about our collections and maybe if anyone wishes to sell something or buy something they could request an item and see if anyone else on hear has it. Have fun.

Today I went to a sports shop that I like to go to called J. D.'s Cards. It is in Richmond Indiana. I got four packs of Press Pass basketball cards and in one of those packs I got a Danny Granger game-used jersey card. The cards is number 183/250. I was pretty happy. I also got a Stephen Graham auto.

Mark Jackson auto and Finals jersey..

I've been trying to get some more of the Finals jersey cards, but I don't want to pay the price they've been going for right now. I think I traded for both of those cards.

How did you make that site? I would like to make one for my cards if you could tell me how.

I used Geocities, a free web site maker. I usually make sites with HTML, as that is more fun for me, but I decided to use an easy program like Geocities, as I have to edit the site a lot. You could also try using Freewebs. For my photo albums, I use Angelfire.

Does anyone else buy alot of cards on Ebay?

I get a lot of cards from eBay.

Well I created my own website but I couldn't figure out how to put pictures on it. Maybe some of you would like to help he out with that. The website that I created is www.sportstalkandcollectibles.blogspot.com (http://www.sportstalkandcollectibles.blogspot.com) . I would appreciate it if everyone would check it out.

That is more of a blog than an actual website, so posting pictures there will probably be the same as posting them here. Find somewhere to host them (PhotoBucket or ImageShack), and then post the url (and if they use BBCode or HTML, you can create a code that allows the picture to show up).

Well, I figure out how to get my cards on a website. If you would like to see a few of my cards go to www.angelfire.com/extreme5/sports247/Basketballcards (http://www.angelfire.com/extreme5/sports247/Basketballcards) . I haven't put all the cards I plan on posting because I am still waiting on three Jermaine jersey cards I bought off of Ebay (plus I got really tired of getting all my cards out and scanning them).

I have like a million baseball cards, most from the early-mid 90's. They are just sitting here in my house...if anyone is interested in buying any of them I would love to start unloading some. If anyone wants to meet up with me somewhere and look I've got most of the cards in big 3-ring binders I can bring those.

I buy cards on Ebay, to me that is the cheapest place to get them. I sold my whole collection last year :( although, I kept a few of my favorites. I got a REALLY good price so it wasn't as painful as I thought. I just started putting together a book of one of nothing but rookies, vintage dodgers, one of pacers rare, and of course the reggie album :). If you have any favorite sellers let me know, I like the dealers with low shipping... ellsworthcards is one of my favorite dealers he has awesome deals and low low shipping

Well, not exactly true....I have a framed signed pix of The Kingston Trio and a 45 RPM record signed by Bob Shane the leader of the trio. (They sent them to me after I had been in contact with them regarding some music I was wanting to perform).

I have a Peyton Manning signed jersey (framed), an Edge signed football, a ball signed by the entire 1992-93 Colts (who were bad but the ball is still cool), a Greg and Mark Maddux signed baseball, a Larry Csonka signed football, and a Tarik Glenn signed football. I also have a Ken Dilger signed football and a Jason Belser framed and signed jersey.

None of this stuff is officially "for sale" but I'd be interested in looking at prices ya'll would offer. And everything has a COA of course.

I also have a ton of basketball cards, some which are pretty valuable I think, that I'm considering listing on here for sale in a couple of months. This would be a massive undertaking so I want to know if there is any interest from any collectors in here interested before I do so.

The best way to do it is to hand sew the unautographed side of the jersey to the back of the inside of the frame. That way it never moves and it stays in its exact spot. Sew it in at least foure spots (top left/right and bottom left/right)

Make sure the glass doesn't touch the autograph so it doesn't rub off over time.

I haven't dabbled in the sports card hobby for about 12 years now (I got out when the whole grading obsession hit). I can't believe how worthless cards have become . One of my better pulls out of a pack was a Kobe Bryant rookie, valued at the time around $40. Here is a completed auction for the same card now. http://cgi.ebay.com/Kobe-Bryant-Rookie-Card_W0QQitemZ170294777350QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_SM _Sports_Cards?hash=item170294777350&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A4%7C65%3A13%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 One dollar?!? You have to be kidding me. It's amazing that the fun that used to be found in the hobby has been killed by the fact that any card can be acquired for practically nothing on ebay. There's no more searching through packs to make a set or find a desired card.

I'm just stating the obvious for everyone else, but my question is this: what do you do with all of these cards now if you're looking to sell a collection? I checked Craigslist and there's a few collections on there with thousands of cards for pennies per card, but I doubt those are selling.

Are basketball cards still widely collected?

Probably until 1996 or so I was a pretty avid collector. Cards were fairly valuable back then. I remember going through a Beckett somewhere years ago and I was surprised how much the overall value of cards had seemed to drop.

i have a tom owens card. i will post it tomorrow. i felt him being the curse of the pacers, it needed a preamble.

There's a new curse in town
Jon Wertheim
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/jon_wertheim/10/28/pacer.nation/index.html

Let the oppression sweepstakes begin. Now that the Curse of the Bambino has been administered the Linda Blair treatment, it's time for another group of beleaguered, long-suffering fans to proclaim that the deities are in cahoots to screw their team.

Cubs devotees, of course, will be the first to stake their claim. Their team hasn't won the World Series since 1908, and their curse already has a name and a legacy. But the franchise has gotten so corporate of late -- The Tribune Co.'s lawyers rattling their sabers at the rooftop bleachers owners; the mistreatment of Steve Stone for having the audacity to tell the unvarnished truth -- that any misfortune is more karma than curse. Buffalo Bills fans will tell you their team has been under a hex. But how cursed can you be when you've been to four Super Bowls? The football fans in say, Atlanta or New Orleans, would kill for that record. (Plus Buffalo has that whole Vincent Gallo thing to account for.)

No, the Blog submits that the Indiana Pacers can now claim to be the most doom-struck franchise in sports. We're calling it the Curse of Tom Owens. A little history: after abundant success in the ABA, the Pacers joined the NBA in '76. Since then, misfortune has trailed behind the franchise like a rudder. In the beginning, the team had a singular knack for terrible trades. Adrian Dantley for James Edwards and Alex English for George McGinnis were two of the gems. But the coup de grace came in '81 when the brain trust sent its first-round pick in '84 to Portland for a journeyman named Tom Owens who played a whopping 74 games in Indianapolis. Portland used that pick to select Sam Bowie, but, as we all know, Michael Jordan was still on the board.

To think: the Pacers could have had Michael Jordan if they hadn't pined for the services of Tom Owens. Babe Ruth for "No, No, Nanette" sounds like an even swap by comparison. (Hell, Sam Bowie for Tom Owens would have been a steal.)

In the early years, the curse of Tom Owens reared its head on the nights of the draft lottery. In '83, the Pacers should have had the first pick, but Houston tanked the last few games of the regular season. The Rockets won a coin flip and got Ralph Sampson -- say what you will, he led the team to an NBA Final -- while the Pacers landed Steve Stipanovich. The following year the Pacers were due to claim the top pick, but David Stern picked the Knicks' envelope out of a hopper -- to this day, Hoosiers swear it was rigged. New York got Patrick Ewing. Indiana got Wayman Tisdale, who turned out to be a better jazz musician than basketball player. As for Stipanovich, a rare knee injury forced him out of basketball after five seasons and by the time he turned 30, he was running an alfalfa farm in Oregon. Really.

Not that "Stipo" was alone. Medical conditions are a recurring theme in the Pacers' doomed history. Before he became the skilled goateed announcer he is today, Clark Kellogg was a hell of a power forward for Indiana. Unfortunately his knees were held together by string, glue and popsicle sticks, and he played his last NBA game at age 25. Likewise, two seasons after he made the All-Star team for the first time, center Rik Smits was out of basketball, his feet worn and torn by the rigors of the NBA. Then there's Chuck Person, who won the Rookie of the Year award and then contracted a mysterious disease that seemed to make him genetically incapable of passing the ball to his teammates. Such is the power of the Curse of Tom Owens.

The Pacers even have their own Bill Buckner moment. In '99, Indiana was up 91-88 against the hated Knicks in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. With six seconds separating the Pacers from victory, New York forward Larry Johnson took an inbound pass and shot. Inexplicably, Indiana's Antonio Davis tapped Johnson on the arm. The shot swished, Davis was whistled for a brain-lock foul. Johnson made the free throw to complete a four-point play. The Knicks won the game and the series.

When the team's dowdy old home, Market Square Arena, was imploded in '99 -- turned, quite literally, into a parking lot -- Pacers' faithful thought the Curse of Tom Owens, too, would disappear into thin air. The new arena, Conseco Fieldhouse, was a basketball shrine that would surely inaugurate a new era. Wrong. The Pacers reached the Finals that season but lost to the Lakers. Larry Bird then resigned as the team's coach, and the team backslid under the squirrelly successor, Isiah Thomas.

The Pacers were tantalizingly close to reversing the curse last spring. Under a competent new coach, Rick Carlisle, the team finished the '03-04 regular season with the best record in the NBA. With the East diluted and the Lakers' locker room more contentious than a Disney shareholders meeting, the Pacers' prospects were looking good. Again, disaster. In the waning moments of the crucial Game 6 of the Eastern Conference, the Pacers were leading Detroit. Ron Artest -- the Pacers' answer to Oil Can Boyd, come to think of it -- blew a gasket. After taking a cheap elbow in the groin from Detroit's Rip Hamilton, Artest retaliated by butting Hamilton in the face. Naturally the refs saw the response and not the original act and cited Artest for a technical foul. The Pistons took the lead, won the game, and, of course, humiliated the Lakers in the Finals.

Hmmm. I think the Fresh Ink autos. were an insert set rather than a regular set.

1948 Leo "Crystal" Klier Bowman basketball card is the oldest basketball card I own. I have a 1934-36 baseball card though. I love the older cards like 60's and 70's like Pete Maravich, Abdul-Jabbar, Erving, Chamberlain and so on.

anybody want to buy a Jamaal Tinsley lot for $5 shipped with cash?? If so, just PM me. I have 2 game-used jersey cards, 16 common cards, 2 rookie cards, and like 8-9 inserts and serial numbered cards and even a refractor...the #'ed cards are #'ed to like 150, 250, 300, etc...I know it's Tinsley, but it's a better deal than you'll get on eBay, that's for sure!!

Just wondering if anyone has any Gold Label Finals game jersey cards of the Pacers. I would love to knock out a few more. Also looking for Pacers Topps Total gold cards /10. The pics aren't good but here's what I have:

I just moved to the Indianapolis area this past summer and am into autographs and cards. Do any of the Pacers do appearances around the city? Also, what is the best way to try for autographs from the visiting teams?

Most of his autographs on cards are pretty rushed. Check out the one someone else posted on this page earlier. Seeing as I try and spend little money on my collection, I'm just happy to have it (was the most expensive card I've bought in all of those scans).

I have an extra Bender from the NBA Finals GU Gold Label set that I would be willing to trade for another in the set that I don't already have (I see you have it but I'm just throwing it out there for everyone).

I'm also open to trading some of my JO game used cards and some of my numbered Pacers cards (they would have to be for other Pacers cards of course).

Here's a link to my collection...for the most part my NBA Finals team autograph set is complete but I would like to upgrade a few:

Steve, those are some really nice cards. I like Pacers stuff, but have always resisted buying cards to keep it less crazy. I just started buying some cards, but haven't collected these things for years and have no idea what I'm doing. I still have all my old 80's sports cards, Dukes of Hazard, ET, Star Wars, WWF and other cards in a simple binder.

I bought this lot of 40 autographed Pacers cards (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150544507577&_rdc=1) on ebay and it turns out they sure look real and super purdy!

Should I get some of these graded or just put them in plastic sleeves or what? I'm looking at a 50 card display frame and need to figure out if they should be graded or not. This is a different world for El Pacero (that I shouldn't have started!) Gracias!

I would just do the 50 card display frame. Since those cards look to be IP (or in person) autographs and didn't come from the card company already autographed. There's no real way of knowing 100% that they're authentic (though I'm sure they probably are). Grading cards can get pretty expensive. Looking through Beckett Grading Services price guide, for your lot of 40 cards, the cheapest route you could go would get you your cards back in 45 days and it would cost $8 per card.

I used to be really heavy into the whole trading card hobby but it got to be too pricey for me. I do still have a nice little collection of Pacers stuff that I won't ever get rid of though. Like the one's I posted already and these...

Agreed. And really no need to get them graded if you are happy with their eye appeal. Probably no need to authenticate them either. Even with the sigs, they are not worth it from an investment point of view; if they were really valuable, you might be less apt to display them in a prominent place.

EP-BTW, those Star Wars cards may be worth something.

My ****ing goodness.

My buddies wife had an uncle who worked for the Atlanta Braves for a few years. He died in 2003. They asked me to come over and figure out who some of their autographed material was. Needless to say, I was highly upset that this stuff was in a closet for 8 years. When I'm done naming names, you will be too. They said there was several more boxes and when they found them, that they'd ask me to help with those too.

I'll start with the mild stuff, these are all autographed game balls. Soime from the World Series, some from the All Star game in Atlanta, and others just game used balls.

- Chipper Jones x 3
- Greg Maddux
- John Smoltz
- Andruw Jones
- Andres Gallaraga
- Jeff Blauser
- Mark Lemke and a few others I can't recall off hand. One of them was an All Star for the Cubs in the 60's.

Those are mild, here are the ones I nearly crapped myself on ....

Carl Yastrzemski x 3
Ted Williams
Willie Mays

No f'n joke. Ted Williams, the Yas three times and a Willie Mays autograph.

ALL BEEN IN A CLOSET FOR 8 YEARS. WTF!?!

I took pictures on my phone, and could post if anyone's interested.

No, they didn't, and I wouldn't feel right asking. They gave me a place to live a few years ago when the person I was living with was drunk and having over his drug addict friends over and they were stealing my ****. It literally got to the point where I slammed the guy into the wall with the hand I was choking him with and started swinging on him. This friend called his wife after breaking up that fight and told her I was moving in until I could get my own place. I moved in that day. If I'd have had to stay there any longer, who knows. So, it's hard to ask them for something after that. I figure I owe them. I'm probably in jail otherwise.

Anyway, here are a couple pics. I'm really just gonna post the Willie Mays, Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski. I forgot to snap a picture of the Reggie Jackson autograph so I forgot to mention it, but it was there too. Lastly, you have no clue how long it took me to figure out the Carl Yastrzemski one. It looks nothing like his name.

You would be over-paying, unless they were on vintage photos or other rare pieces. Been to several auctions where you can get signed balls with authentication for much less. Of course, Ted Williams is one of the most forged autos in the industry, so authentication is useful, though admittedly not 100% accurate.

Never saw Mays play in his prime, but he or Stan Musial are arguably the "greatest living ballpayers," an unofficial title that DiMaggio held for many years.

If anyone is into autographs, you should consider going to the National Sports Collectors Show. It will be in Chicago this year, early August I think. Musial usually signs there. Get him while you can. The Bulls also have a booth where they sell game-used and game-issued items at very reasonable prices.

Don't be disappointed if you can't come even close to getting the whole team. I think we had success waiting in 3 different lines last year, which amounted to about 6-7 autographs b/c they had about 2-3 players at each station and only allowed an hour for the players to sign. However, I got Bird and a difficult sig, in O'Brien---the STH event was the only opportunity to get that one. I have a Sports Illustrated that I bought at a show that I was going to have Bird sign, but I just noticed that it had writing on the inside, which kind of ruins the piece for me, even though the cover would display nicely.

I'll have my girlfriend with me so I might have her and my buddy's wife hop in different lines and then pass the ball off to them to get as many as possible. Whatever players I don't get at the STH party I'll try to get at the Fan Jam before next season. That's if I even decide to do the ball. It's a ton of work that I probably won't feel like doing when the time comes.

My buddy James got his entire bobblehead set signed with a silver sharpie. They all look really good. The only one that didn't get signed in silver was DC, who accidentally signed with a regular black sharpie while Roy was using the silver sharpie. Jeff Foster signed his bobblehead right on the butt of the figure, lol!

Antonio signed that for me right after his rookie season at a Petsmart grand opening on the North side. He and his wife were both super nice and it made me an AD fan for life. To this day, he's still my favorite Pacers player ever. AD actually doesn't have any certified autographed cards in a Pacers uniform, so that one is extra cool to me.

Hey guys I was just wondering if any of you guys have ever collected the 2000-2001 Gold Label Finals Jersey cards?

I have recently been trying to put together the set, and have found that they are very difficult to find.

I have only purchased two thus far for about 5 dollars a piece. (Zan Tabak and Bender). I see that there is an ebay auction for the reggie right now, but it looks as if it will sell for quite a bit. I can find no real idea of what these things are going for now.

If any of you can share what you've paid/ or think they are worth I'd appreciate it.

I see that there is also a dale davis for $20 obo on ebay.

The set goes for different prices at times depending on how long it has been since the last showed up and if two of them are posted around the same time. The Reggie will be without a doubt the most expensive (I think I'm now only missing Reggie and Rose). Good luck with the set - if you can continue to grab them for about $5 each I would say to go for it.

I'll vouch for what Deadshot said. I've got 7 of the cards from the set and I didn't pay more than $7 for any of them. I still don't have the Reggie because of how expensive they always are. The others that I'm missing are just because I've never seen them for sale anywhere.

I haven't got it in the mail yet but I finally got the McKey from that set. Now all I'm missing is Reggie and Rose and I'm going to take my sweet time with those I think.

I now have

D. Davis
McKey
Bender
Perkins
Tabak
Jackson
Mullin
Croshere

I'm missing

Reggie
Jalen
Smits
Best

If you happen to run across any of the ones that I'm missing please pick them up and I'd be happy to buy them from you.

I suppose people were scared of the long shipping wait...but I couldn't believe I won this Mel Daniels auto for under $1. I regretted not snatching the last one with a BIN of $13. These things are pretty hard to come by. I guess it slipped under the radar but I'm stoked:

Nice find. Did you go to the last game of the season and if so, were you lucky enough to get anything from a player? We got a shoe from Jeff Foster. Actually, my kid did. Size 15!

ChristianDudley

If you're wanting just single Pacers cards instead of entire NBA sets and such, I'd say search around on eBay...maybe search this past season plus a player's name, for example: 10-11 Paul George
and then see if there's anything you like...that's what I do since I mainly pick up something randomly every so often of a few current players...

Just pick one you like and go from there. Don't come into this expecting to make any money and you'll be fine. If you are going after specific cards, just get them off of ebay. If you're going for sets, try to buy hobby boxes instead of retail boxes (Walmart, Target, etc). Unless you know the owner of your local shop, they will likely screw you over so your best bet is to check online. Its a shady business overall lol. I would suggest dacardworld.com. I have ordered from them a handful of times and have been pleased. As far as sets go, I haven't purchased any cards in the last couple of months, but my favorite set this year was Donruss 2010-11 (has a nice old school look). If you want to just check it out I would suggest going retail in this case - you can get a rack pack of 40 cards for roughly $5. Good luck - let me know if you have any other questions.

blowoutcards.com is also EXCELLENT--great service, great deals, and super fast shipping. If you're mainly looking to put together/complete some common sets and such, then retail stores would be the way to go (Wal-Mart, Target, etc), but if you're looking to pull some nicer cards such as autographs or game-used jersey cards, then the hobby version of cards is the way to go.

What is the difference between hobby version and retail version cards? I thought back when I was collecting you could get game-used jersey cards in wal-mart packs.

You can get them there but the odds are better in hobby packs. However, the market is flooded with them now anyway so its a lot easier to get them at WalMart than it used to be.

With the hobby version, there are much better odds at getting "good" cards, such as jersey cards, autographs, etc. They are, for the most part, somewhat hard to get in single packs at retail stores like Wal-Mart and Target, unless you get something that says something about a jersey card or autograph being guaranteed. Hobby version products are mainly sold at specialty stores, such as card shops and places like that. Retail is obviously sold at Wal-Mart, Target, and other stores like that.

This year's (10-11) Donruss cards were great for doing team sets...most players in the NBA are in the set and they even have team checklists that were cool. The Pacers team checklist card had the infamous pic from Media Day of Danny/Darren/Roy on it which was very cool. Players from the Pacers that are in the set include:

Danny
Roy
Collison
Rush
Dahntay
TJ Ford
Hansbrough
Paul George
and a couple others I believe

Well Beckett.com and their magazine has always been the most used in the hobby, but the truth about it is this: For the most part, it seems like they just make up whatever prices sound good. Book value isn't really even close to actual sell value, which is what most people go by today. Beckett as REALLY declined over the past several years and honestly, the best place to look is by using eBay's Completed Listings as you can see the current market values, at least by eBay standards. I always know the markets for everything NBA-related in the hobby very well, so if you have any questions about values you can always ask me and I'd be glad to help you out.

And I also have a couple Paul George rookie cards available if you'd be interested.

I definitely agree with it being easier to get them. Some of Panini's products this year, such as the retail rack packs and even the majority of their blaster boxes from Wal-Mart and Target normally either guarantee a jersey card or autograph, or it is fairly easy odds-wise to pull one it seems like.

Probably your best time to buy on current players would be the offseason. With George you should be fine to buy now, but unless you see something at an unbelievable price, I would say to wait a month before you make any purchases.

I'm going to add my two cents b/c I have probably been collecting cards longer than both of you put together! As mentioned in this and the next post, dacardworld and BlowoutCards are great places to buy unopened new material. My recommendation is to never buy on impulse from either of these places, though. Rather, comparison shop. Sometimes one place is way lower than the other or is running a deal. Also, don't buy new product right away. In 9 of 10 cases, you'll find the prices drop after a couple of months.

Disagree about local shops aiming to screw people over. Remember that as a brick and mortar store, they have to pay their rent, so expect to pay a bit more, but then you usually save S&H. Don't know where you are, but there is a show in Indy nearly every month and several folks sell new product at reasonable prices. Also, consider going to the National Sports Collector's Convention. Can't wait! It's back in Chicago this summer. You can get everything you want there, and can negotiate a fair price.

I'm a set collector too. Do some on-line investigating about box breaks, collation etc. and buy a product that you will enjoy collecting for the base set unless you really just want to assemble team sets.

Whatever you do, enjoy!

ChristianDudley
05-20-2011, 11:22 PM
idk on the value of that...being as PG is one of the more popular rookies, and especially since he has LOTS of potential, and the factors of it being #'ed to 5 and it being a tag patch, the sky is the limit for this card--not really sure what it could go for. Could go for $70, or it could go for $300. I'm not really sure what it will end for......

Yeah, those are some of the better packs out there. I haven't had much luck with the playoff contenders, but I have been very lucky with the Rookies and Stars packs.

If you are just wanting sets and nothing special, you might want to go to Wal-Mart and get the retail packs. You get 10 cards compared to 5 and usually save 2 or 3 bucks. It will also help your collection grow faster.

If you are interested in hobby packs, there is a decent card shop in Greenwood or there are some online sites. I hope this helps!

KG---If that's your PG collection so far, then an affordable addition is the Panini Threads card (it is basically just a die-cut card shaped like a jersey). They are inserts into the base set. Picked it up at a card show for $1, then had it signed by PG at the STH event.

BTW, the card shop in Greenwood is closing soon, if it isn't closed already. I don't know of any other shops in the area; I go to a local show and will be going to the National in early August to complete some baseball card sets (hopefully) this time.

Yeah I have a lot of the Panini Thread jerseys but still haven't managed to get a George one yet. I will have to get one off eBay.

He had mentioned something about the shop closing the last time I was in there, but I wasn't sure when it was going to happen. I have only been in there twice, but it seemed like a decent shop.

I was also thinking about going to the National this year as well. I think it would be like a 5 hour drive for me. Is it definitely worth it?

The National is an experience like no other. You will see things there that you never have seen and may never see again as many museum-quality items for sale or to be auctioned will fall into private hands.

The card companies set up booths and give out promos that are pretty nice each day. Some companies like Dave and Adams deeply discount their products.

I also have success selling stuff there.

There is a saying that if you cannot find it at the National, it probably doesn't exist.

I think you buy admission tickets to get into the National Sports Collectors Convention...just like at any other convention center event. I hear it is worth the price of admission just to experience it all as it is absolutely AMAZING. A Yahoo! Sports writer wrote a story about it last year I believe. I do have some Eric Gordon commons and rookies that I'd probably be willing to let go of if you'd be interested...

I have been to several Nationals. You cannot go to a better card and memorabilia show. Great place to people-watch too. Fun to camp out near the autograph pavilion if you have time to kill, but I never buy autographs there----too expensive.

You can buy tickets in advance at a slightly reduced price at the National website, I believe. It's $20/day at the door.

I usually stay at a local hotel for a couple of days. The first day, I try to cover all the tables and also get whatever promos the card companies are giving out. To do this, you have to average something like only 30 seconds a table to cover everything in a day, and be in line at the card company booths at specified times. By the end of the first day I have done my comparison shopping and have picked up any rarer stuff that I figure won't last possibly til the next day. By the second day I am working on set-building and buying new product and supplies. Availability is best on the first day; best deals are had on the last day, but you run the risk that dealers will have left early.

i don't know if anybody here does much with grading cards or likes graded cards, but at the National, there are people there to grade your cards for you on the spot instead of you having to mail them in to the company like normal to get your cards graded. I don't do the graded stuff, but I know some do and this is probably the best time to do it since you can drop them off and pick them up in just a day's time.

Unless you want to pay more for the convenience of staying across the street from the convention center, stay a couple of miles away for less. Don't book a hotel on the National website. I called a toll free number for the hotel I wanted and saved $20/night.

This is true, but as of last year, they were still charging a bit of a premium for the on-site grading. Not a big fan of grading, but I have some 1960 and 1961 Fleer baseball cards to sell, and the high grades command a premium, so I may bite the bullet so I can get some extra $$$ to complete my sets.

It pays to comparison shop. One usually sells a product lower than the other, but there is no set pattern.

Also, FYI, both have and I believe still do sell hobby and retail backs so read the descriptions carefully. I always buy cheap retail packs at the National for wrapper redemption promotions. It's usually selling for 1/2 to 2/3 of what hobby sells for.

I guess I'd respectfully disagree here. It depends what you are looking for and who the dealers are on the day you go. I have seen a couple of dealers with tons of Pacers inserts and core cards. There are also people there that can help with set-building and have hobby boxes of new product for sale. The shows are usually short on supplies though.

I sent him my items with a SASE as well. First time he signed a card for me in silver paint pen and the second time I got my photo back signed in black sharpie. And no, I didn't provide him with pens/sharpies--he already had them fortunately. I did see some people this past year send multiple items at once and they got everything back signed, so if you have more than one item you want signed, I'd say go ahead and send it all to him at once (maybe no more than 3 items, though).

Got home, and with further inspection I spot Peyton Manning's signature. It matches his signature online very well. A crap ton of other names are on there that I can't seem to read.

No way. $75 max. People really don't like team signed balls. I have a ball that has Peyton's signature on it, but it is worthless because there are so many no name players on it as well.

I stand corrected. I do know Peyton signs a clean legible ball so that helps.

Several of you are right but also wrong about the Manning ball. At the National, I saw team balls going for more than that, an dsingle signed balls definitely go for more than that in this area depending on the ball and other considerations.

Lots of nice stuff at the National by the way. Just got back in fact---when I've had a chance to rest I might post some interesting nuggets.

I'm looking to sell this card for $5 dlvd in the form of cash, money order, or cashiers check( I do not own a Paypal account). It is number 3 out of only 9 made, which makes it a particularly rare card! I'm just looking to do a quick sale. Extras will be added if purchased! PLMK if you are interested. Thanks!

I got 30 media guides at a flea market today for $10 bucks. Pretty sweet deal.

Those media guides are sick...I sold the one I had from a Pacers @ Sixers game. It was even signed by Quisey, Diener, Kareem Rush, and maybe 1 other player.

KingGeorge-- do they have all the probable starters listed, "current" stats, injury status updates, etc?

They aren't the individual game media guides. These are the full season media guides that cost $10 a piece. I didn't get any Pacers or Colts guides, but I think I got some pretty rare ones. I got a 2006 NFL Record and Fact Book, a 2006 and 2008 NBA Draft Media guide, a 2006 NFL Kickoff information guide, 8 regular NBA media guides from 06-07 and 07-08, and 16 regular NFL media guides.

Oh ok, still real nice, though. That one 08 Draft one should have some good stuff about Roy and Brandon in it.

Bought a Reggie Miller rookie card yesterday for 8 bucks...also bought a 50 pack of the 2011 Topps Football cards. I pulled a Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton rookie card, along with a gold Sam Bradford Rookie of the Year card.

Did I get a good deal on the Reggie card? And is the 2011 topps a good set?

Depends on what card it is, and what the condition is. And I don't collect football cards so I can't tell you anything about the 2011 Topps.

It's the 1988 Fleer card.

I would say it is worth 8-10 bucks.

That's about right. Keep in mind the 88 Fleer is his ONLY true rookie card.
