Contestant Misses Deadline By 6 Minutes

UPDATED: 4:34 pm CDT July 21, 2005

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. -- It wasn't too little, but it was too late.

Fishermen who hauled in a massive 1,100 pound tiger shark off Massachusetts this past weekend failed to capture first place in the monster shark derby on Martha's Vineyard.

The reason: The boat was six minutes too late in returning to Oak Bluffs harbor with its catch.

The toothy tiger shark may not have won the competition, but it did win the admiration of other fishermen. Steven James of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club said this truly was a monster shark, and one that "could eat you."

Very bravely, and very carefully. I've watched Jaws and seen how sharks get mad and take a bite out of the boat.

They proved on Mythbusters that he could damage the boat but that it was highly unlikely. Especially since he couldn't have possibly taken a bite out........

That was fun episode last week. They had some great "Jaw's Myths".

Exploding the shark was hilarious. Especially when they had to use C4 to finish the job on their "fake" Shark.

Some great whites can actually jump straight out of the water, when hunting seals.

They are called breachings, when they do this. :shudder:

I think these Great Whites are about 16-20 feet long. Notice the seal in it's jaws, in some of the pics.

Me too, I don't like how they measure it, hanging it like that.
