The Indianapolis Colts have begun chipping away at their 10-player draft class, signing kicker Dave Rayner.

The Michigan State standout, a sixth-round pick, has signed a three-year contract that includes a rookie minimum base salary of $230,000 in 2005 and an undisclosed signing bonus.

The Colts used a draft pick for a second consecutive year on a kicker with the intent of him, not veteran Mike Vanderjagt, handling kick-off duties. Last year, seventh-round pick David Kimball failed to earn a roster spot.

Rayner displayed a strong leg during his four-year career at Michigan State. However, he was erratic as a placekicker, converting just 62-of-90 field-goal attempts (68.9 percent).

The Colts report to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute on July 27 for the start of training camp, and only players under contract are allowed to report.

Man, I'll miss Vandy and his golf game.

Hmm.... I know a lot of people are annoyed by Vandy, but even they must admit he is a great kicker. Well, what happens, happens.

Maybe they just want MV to get off his butt and work on his kickoffs. No 6th round rookie making 68% of his FGs is going to oust MV.

Dave Rayner will never kick field goals for the Colts, barring some Vanderjagt falling out.

Kinda like Vanderjagt will never be able to kick off. He could work on it forever and he'd still be below average. Not to mention the suffering FG%.

Actually you're right on the button. Vandy has been working very hard on kickoffs with an actual coach down in Texas. We'll see if there's been any improvement soon.
