Knicks Sign Jerome James
14th July, 2005 - 12:27 am
Howard Beck/NY Times - Jerome James, who played the last four seasons in Seattle, agreed yesterday to a five-year deal with the Knicks, according to his agent. Precise terms will not be set until the league completes its new labor deal. But it was expected that James will earn about $5 million in the first year of the contract, and $29 million over five years

Before the contract is signed, James will be installed as the starting center, a job he will win by default. The Knicks traded their only true center, Nazr Mohammed, in February, and traded his replacement, Kurt Thomas, in June. The team drafted a center, Channing Frye, but he may not be ready for full-time work as a rookie.

So the void will be filled by James, a 7-foot-1 journeyman who turns 30 in November and has career averages of 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.

"It was clear once they moved Kurt Thomas and moved Nazr that they were in need of a real center, and that's what Jerome is ( ) ," said James's agent, Marc Fleisher. "He's looking forward to the challenge."

Judging from the title of this thread I thought Isiah was up to his old tricks again. :D

Not a horrible signing though.

Why does the title say Bill Russell?

Well, as Isiah's resident apologist, um, well, it's easy to see, uh, no, uh, at least, um...(scratches head), sorry I got nothing.

Wait, I know. At least he's not 6-7!

The TNT crew called James Bill Russell through the Sonics playoff run. Not sure what sparked off the gag though.

Also LMAO at this signing they trade a very good center in Nazr Muhamed (sp?) and then they go and get a bum who had 6 good games in his whole career. Good job Isiah

Nazr was a bum when he played for NY. You can't judge him on his SA play. Remember, Tim Duncan even made Samaki Walker look mediocre.

Rim, if you're out there, get off the ledge, son. You still have plenty to live for.....

I've always liked Jerome James as a player. That might be a little too much money, but it is a decent pickup

There's one thing scary about this. Will this push the asking price for Dale's services?

Sonics

Notebook: Weiss or wide open? Sonics set to decide

By Percy Allen

Seattle Times staff reporter.
Notes

The Sonics have contacted 14-year veteran Dale Davis, who played last season with Indiana and Golden State. The 35-year-old forward is also drawing interest from Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Antonio, New Jersey and Indiana.

Haven't heard anywhere that Dale will be asking for more cash. However, the market may dictate the Pacers' will need to pay more than originally thought. Hopefully we don't have a Brad Miller situation revisited.

Well since his name was already brought up I will go ahead & make this comment.

Centers are overpaid as a rule to begin with. All-star centers are going to be well compensated.

I have no problem with this contract for N.Y. is James gives them 3/4 of what he gave Seattle in the playoffs. But it remains to be seen if he will.

Wow, I another awful move for New York... James' playoff success is eeriely reminiscent of Croshere's
